“Delicious and good fun”
Reviewed June 12, 2014

This was really good food served with a refreshing lack of pretension. All the staff were thoughtful and knowledgeable and the wine recommendations were a perfect accompaniment to the food (and surprisingly reasonable). We had three courses and four 'surprises' - all quite different but they tasted delicious, and presentation and portion size were perfect. Food of this calibre is not inexpensive but this is good value for money and a great special night out.

“Tres Bon!”
Reviewed June 6, 2014

We had heard that this was a very good restaurant but it far exceeded our expectations and surprised us to find such a place in such a quiet area.
We were not hugely hungry so arrived with the intention of sharing a starter, having a main course and a glass of wine. The maître d had other ideas ;-)
With a knowing smile he suggested we shared the starter and then shared each of the main courses. He didn't like the idea of us having a glass of one particular wine throughout and said he would give us a small amount of several wines which suited each course. He informed us that there would be a selection of surprises during the meal and far from filling us up, they would increase our appetite. We were happy to go along with this ideas and how pleased we were that we had. Our first real surprise was a ferrero rocher chocolate filled with foie gras and surrounded by edible gold. Wow. What an assault on the taste buds. Another was souffléd scrambled egg with marinaded salmon and truffle oil, superbly served in an egg shell on salt crystals! A lovely. Sauterne went beautifully with the foie gras...one of my favourites. It was served with figs and almonds and ginger bread, which I did actually think was a little overpowering. We had the wild sea bass with cuttlefish and a delicious lemon sauce with a local wine and then a beautifully succulent lamb dish with potato foam, grated truffle and a selection of vegetables. Then came a pre dessert surprise of truffles, madeleines and mint marshmallows. We couldn't manage a dessert after all that. It has to be one of the finest meals I had ever tasted and personally prepared for us. Very nice ambience with Katie Melua playing in the background. I must say we wondered about the cost, but were pleasantly surprise with a bill including tip of €130. As much as we wanted to spend, but not exorbitant for the quality and quantity of food we had. An excellent venue for that special meal. Would definitely recommend

“A great night out”
Reviewed June 2, 2014

Had dinner here last Friday night. My wife and I decided to go all out and went for the 7 course tasting menu and the wine pairings to accompany. The owner was pleasant and friendly, not overly chatty but very polite. We were given two amuse bouches which were lovely and very tasty pre-appetisers. asparagus course was fine, not very tasty but that's asparagus for you. the foie gras with the fig stick was fabulous, really delicious. scallops were melt in the mouth, we then had some fish course which was given to us by the owner as my wife asked about it as it was on the a la carte menu. the owner said it tasted like lobster...it didn't. in fact it was not tasty at all, very bland and disappointing, however the lamb main course made up for it. this was a cracking dish and ticked all the boxes and im not even a lamb eater. cheeseboard was good, and dessert was very nice. maybe im being harsh but I don't fully agree that the food is quite that of Michelin star standard, and in fairness they are not charging Michelin star prices. it is really delicious, don't get me wrong. but some courses needs a bit more refinement and consistency as some dishes are fab, others are so so. presentation was good but not special. also the breads are not nice, but if you ask me Portugal as a whole does not do good bread.
the wines were top notch. the owner really looked after us here. started with a nice fruity white, and then one that was a little more dry and crisp, great wines. im not a fan of sweet wines in general but the one we had with the cheeseboard was gorgeous. but the reds...the quinta do frances, from a vineyard literally up the road in the Algarve was best wine I tasted this whole holiday by a mile and he left us the bottle which we gladly polished off. then we were brought another red, though at this stage, I couldn't tell red from white as we were well oiled with them pouring the wine all night like it was the wedding feast of Cana. Great night out, lovely atmosphere, not too stiff at all, great food and wine (by the bucketload), happy customer. if I do ever return to carvoeiro (unlikely), I will definitely return to Bon Bon
