Description: "For authentic Alentejo cuisine in the Algarve, we highly recommend this chilled and cheerful restaurant only minutes away from Praia do Carvoeiro. The cavernous, open-plan dining room at A Vela has a light and breezy nautical theme and a mezzanine dining area, and is decorated with maritime bric a brac, sea-blue chairs and whitewashed walls. The café-style ambience is buzzy and fun, and the menu varied and reasonably priced. Classic dishes at A Vela include the black pork served with fresh vegetables and potatoes baked with melted cheese; the salad 'Caprese' style with tomato, mozzerella and oregano; and the suckling pig roasted in a wood oven – and the restaurant also offers vegetarian and children's menus. We had a very enjoyable meal. The staff were the most friendly we have come across so far. We had the Portuguese steak and the octopus, both of which were lovely. The kids were made to feel really welcome too.

“We'd rather have gone somewhere else”
Reviewed August 13, 2014

We went here August 6th. We hadn't reserved but the owner kindly set us an extra table, which at the time I thought was lovely of her, but there were a few empty tables which weren't occupied during the time we were there. We ordered a cocktail each, bread and some more drinks to follow the cocktail. The second lot of drinks never arrived and 30 minutes later after no food either we started attempting to catch the eye of one of the waitresses. We took to shouting and waving and we were just ignored. After another 15 minutes my partner had to walk into the path of one waitress to ask if we could just pay for what we'd had and go somewhere else but the owner brought us our drinks and said they were on the house.
The food wasn't worth waiting for, we were at Taste accross the road the following night and the food there was significantly better and we were really well looked after.
The free drinks were still on the bill at the end of the night although after another complaint the owner removed them.
They were too busy, which is understandable, but they should've just said so and we'd have gone somewhere else. Had they checked in with us to apologise for the delay, we'd happily have bought more drinks while we waited. We'd have probably also had dessert as we did in the other restaurants we went to but we weren't in good spirits after sitting with no food or drinks for almost an hour. Disappointing.
The suckling pig was good, but there wasn't much of it.

“A little disappointing”
Reviewed August 7, 2014

We booked specifically to have the suckling pig and whilst this was good we waited 2.5 hours to be served two courses. So tempers got a little frayed as blood sugar levels dropped!

The staff were very nice but there were not adequate numbers of them and a couple clearly came from the Manuel school of waitering.

These problems would be easy to put right and then this review would have dramatically improved.

“Very good food and service”
Reviewed July 26, 2014 via mobile

We had passed this restaurant on a number of occasions whilst in Carvoeiro and finally decided we would give it a try. The menu offered a good choice for all pallets.

The food, wine, and service was very good. We had four starters, four main courses, sweets, and a bottle of wine which I felt was reasonably priced.

My family and I all agreed that we would certainly return to the restaurant.

The only negative point I have was the time delay between dishes however, the food vas very good and worth waiting for!

“sweet town restaurant”
Reviewed July 23, 2014

Nice restaurant on the main "out road" of Carvoeiro. Good food and excellent service. If you decide on the suckling pig you must reserve. That means they will reserve a table and then cook the pig, you can just turn up and expect it. I found this a bit confusing from the signs on the wall.
Nice place.
