“Superb facility with room for improvement.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 30, 2013

If like my family you will be reading these reviews prior to setting off, or booking this holiday.
I can tell you that firstly the Monte Santo resort is clean tidy and indeed very pleasing overall.
Our room was number 33, which at first was a little disappointing as it was the furthest apartment away from the pool. It was however only a 3 minute walk to poolside which is something i could live with. You could see the ocean from our balcony, however it would be a stretch of the imagination to say it had a sea view. The furnishing and finishing was top class within the apartment.WARNING be careful with the hot water as it is extremely hot and will scald you if your not careful.
The maid service was daily as promised, however it was this service that raised my only major problem with our stay.
The cleaners worked their socks off all day, mainly getting rooms ready for visitors who turned up early like my party did. we got to the hotel at mid day, announced our arrival a they got the room ready in a jiffy. We should not have got their until 4pm according to the literature. I was very grateful of this which is why i did not make a complaint about the room service we got.
My problem was that our room was cleaned on about 10 of the days we were there, last. Some times after 6pm but usually between 4.30pm and 6pm. This is the time that you generally head back to your room after a day poolside or even down on the beach. You want to have a shower and kick back for a hour or so. We were unable to do this as the cleaners would inevitably be knocking on the door before the shower had time to steam up the mirror. In my opinion they should make the cleaners vary the times that they service each apartment, this would ensure that one property would not always get the rough end of the stick.

The poolside bar is a little pricey............no i lied, its very expensive. While we stayed, we would only frequent the bar during happy hour, 5.30pm to 6.30pm when we arrived on the 16th June, later changed to 5pm to 6pm and again at 10pm until 11pm (this was done without letting the patrons know). The head bar man is good at his job, the rest of the bar staff are very amateur. If he is not pouring your pint, you will be short measured and/or get the wrong change. He informed me that they were trying to encourage more use of the bar, hence the sudden change in happy hour. I can tell you how to get more people to the bar, lower the prices, its simples. The cocktails were about 6.5 euros each, and to be honest....they weren't that special. The beer was 4.5 euro for a large local larger and usually came with an inch and half of head on it.
The bar and surrounding area where wi fi hotspots, any where else around the pool was hit and miss. It was clean tidy and pleasing to the eye.
enough said about the bar.

We had read the reviews about restaurants in the vicinity of the Hotel. one which was recommended was Villa Nova, this was about a 15 minute walk from room 33. (out small gate by town houses, turn left and first left) It is essentially a poolside bar which has quite a reputation. We booked a table for 4, had a main meal and 2 sweets. We had a bottle of rose' and also a bottle of water. The final bill was 92 euro, for all four. I wouldn't say it was fantastic, but it was ok.
There is however a restaurant out of the main gate, turn left, turn right at island and 200 meters down the road. It is called Franco, or Frango, can't remember exactly. The service was great and the food was just as good. it was a 10 minute walk from room 33.
You will need to travel into town for any other restaurants, 30 minute walk downhill. We tryed the Californian Italian restaurant which was not more than a 6 out of 10, and the Indian restaurant which was no more than a 5 out of 10.
if you want to take a drink and watch some TV sports, imprevesto is a good choice, as is Hemmingway which is next door. Rascals is ok but you would have to be inside to watch the tv.

The beach is small, but satisfies the needs of the tourists.
Carvoeiro is a small fishing village turned into a concrete jungle and nothing more.

Silves is a major local attraction which does not live up to its reputation. Its a place that you feel going through your pockets before you get there. Every bit of information in the fort is in Portuguese, 99% of the tourists are not Portuguese. The only way to read up on what you are looking at is to pay 10 euro for a pamphlet! Also the attitude of the cashiers at these place is not good, a smile don't cost a lot does it? Silves would be a nice 2 hour visit if you knew what everything was there for.
There are a few Roman attractions in the Algarve which are cheap to enter (less than 2 euro).
They are well maintained and well presented with translations on descriptions. Again the attendants and cashiers paid little attention to their customers and were impolite.

Lagos was full of beggars shacking cans and asking for "monies.....monies....monies". Not a great day out for us to be honest.

Villamoura was a nice visit and a pleasant half day spent. Lovely Marina café's and restaurants.

Portimaou was a pleasant enough trip for us, with only 1 beggar seen all day.

Beach hopping along the coast is worth a day as you can stumble on some real stunning locations.

All in all we had a great time at Monte Santo resort; however Portugal tourist board need to pull their socks up a bit.

Room Tip: Downstairs apartments can use grass for their sunbeds, and are therefore better for sun worshippers.

Thank you for your kind compliments about our resort and accommodations, we are glad that you were comfortable. We appreciate your comments about the cleaning service. Our Housekeeping team works extremely hard ant thank you for noticing this. I will pass this suggestion of alternating the order of cleaning that the end suites aren´t always the end of the route.
Thank you for comments about our bar. These will also be passed onto management to be analyzed. We are glad that you got to get out and about to visit the area and hope that you enjoyed visiting the rest of the Algarve, there certainly are stunning hidden gems near us. We hope that you return to Monte Santo in the near future, where we look forward to receiving you again!

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 27, 2013

I was staying at this resort for 4 days at the end of a 3 week holiday in Algarve. I had a number of issues yet still feel it deserves a 4 star rating.

Checking in, the chap at reception was very helpful and talked us through everything very carefully and made us feel welcome. As our townhouse wasnt ready, he walked us to the bar, showed us the facilities and got us a free welcome drink which is a real nice touch and great way to start a stay.

The main pool area looked really nice and it wasnt overcrowded so another tick in the box.

Our townhouse was ready about 20 minutes later and we jumped in the car. The apartments are lovely, well decorated and still relatively new. Each block of 10 or so townhouses have a "private" pool which is brilliant. Again, plenty of loungers and not overcrowded. We also had a fairly decent seaview from the upstairs bedrooms and balcony as well.

With 2 x 15 year old boys in tow, the pool table, games area, gym and Free WIFI at the main hotel block was fantastic and the boys ended up there every night to late enjoying the facilities.

Although im sure you could have walked down to town at night, we chose the option of getting a taxi which reception sorts for you and only costs 5 euros each way.

So the few negatives:

Internet wasnt working when we got in and i reported it but it wasnt fixed until the next day.

We didnt have an ironing board and hairdryer but reception got us one immediately.

Lastly, there was a fairly horrible smell when we got in that kept coming and going. I reported it to the cleaners but they didnt really understand. Im sure if i reported it to reception they would have sorted it but as we had unpacked everything and were only there for a few days, we put up with it. I havent let this affect my overall rating as it was my own choice not to report it and get moved.

This was our first stay in Carvoeiro as we have a place in Vilamoura and whilst I probably wont be back, this has nothing to do with the resort. For people who like Carvoeiro or are trying for the first time, I would highly recommend the Monte Santo.

Fantastic resort. Brilliant for families with young children. However, a few downsides...Limited evening entertainment, no real atmosphere at the bar area at night unless you are looking for a quiet drink. The reception staff were hit & miss, some being more helpful than others. On the Internet it states free wifi in the townhouses, however this isn't the case & wifi was only available in the hotel or via device which you had to pay extra for.
We chose to go half board which in hindsight was a bad decision. Breakfast is the same everyday which got a bit boring & you only get to choose from the menu of the day for the evening meal. On the plus side - lunch & dinner were interchangeable should you want to eat out instead. The pizza were good & you could order to collect.

It was our first trip back to Portugal in a long time and thought it would be hard to find hotels as good as the Porto Mare in Madeira. However, the Monte Santo blew our expectations away. The photos on the website do no justice to the hotel as it is quite superb.
We stayed in one of the two bedroom apartments which were extremely comfortable, dvd player and television for kids (few English channels), brilliant kitchen amenities, beautiful veranda, just pure bliss. Would definitely recommend this for families as a quiet retreat. Breakfast in the morning was quite good, plenty of fresh fruit, breads, cereals for kids and of course the usual fried breakfast for lovers of that cuisine. We had dinner one night at the hotel out of curiosity and it turned out to be delicious. Bar food was fine with homemade pizza's, sandwiches and pastas for those of you trying to watch your budget.
The staff are all extremely friendly and courteous and I'm unable to remember everyone, but José, Alexandria and Debora were a joy to behold and catered for your every need. Credit to the hotel indeed.
We chose to get a private transfer to and from the hotel as a car is not really needed. €170 covered a family of 5 or more in a mini bus to and from the hotel which takes about 40mins. Taxi's for 4 or less from Caroveiro village to the hotel was only €5, 5 or more people was only €7. For walkers it's a 15min stroll into the village.
Without dragging the review out, the Monte Santo is exceptional and we would have no hesitation returning there. If you're looking for luxury with some peace and quiet, this is the place to go. If you're also looking for a nice meal in the village, go to Elliots just out of the village or Jan's which is right in front of the beach in the village itself.

Room Tip: All the rooms are extremely comfortable, so no need to recommend specific room numbers.

We returned yesterday from a stay at the Monte Santo and wished our week had been longer. As has been mentioned in other reviews the quality of the apartment was excellent. Very clean, spacious and full on new well maintained equipment. We travelled as a group containing a 21 month old, two parents (aged 30-35) and two grandparents (aged 60-65) and the pleasing thing to report is that we all thoroughly enjoyed the holiday which is testimony to the range of facilities and activities available at Monte Santo. The indoor pool, outdoor pools, play area, kids play hut and spa were excellent and we never had any issues with sun beds, towels, etc. which are plentiful.

Contrary to some of the other reviews the downhill walk to the town was a fairly easy 15-20 minute stroll with a buggy and given the views as you near the town was actually a pleasant way to start an evening. Good choice of places to eat in town which were all kid friendly, particularly enjoyed Vila Medici. A taxi was only 6 Euro on the way home.

Staff at the resort were exceptionally helpful and friendly. The blonde manageress in the restaurant particularly helpful and friendly at breakfast and made everyone (despite the mess their kids may be making!) feel welcome and at ease. Every member of staff had a smile and would help with any request very quickly and achieved the balance of being there if you need them but not being intrusive.

Would recommend hiring a car as the surrounding area has some excellent beaches and towns worth visting, while zoo marine is a fun day out.

With the age of our little one we are considering going back again as it is hard to find somewhere that ticks as many boxes as this resort and area. While this review is extremely positive the only small word of caution I would add is that having been fortunate enough to stay in many 5 star resorts / hotels in many countries the hotel doesn't have the grand feel that is often found when staying 5 star. However this missing wow factor is worth it as the overall experience and facilities make up for it.

My family and I stayed in the Monte Santo Resort for the first two weeks of June. We had a very pleasant and enjoyable experience and are looking forward to returning in the future.
If you are planning on booking to stay in Monte Santo, I would recommend the 2 bedroom townhouses (we got a free upgrade, it's worth asking). In the townhouses, there is a lovely small pool out the back, ideal if you don't like the busy hustle-bustle of the big pool (although that was lovely too.)
The staff at Monte Santo were so helpful and pleasant. The people at reception suggested places to go and booked taxis for us. The staff serving at breakfast and at the bar were also lovely (if ever you are at the bar, try their non-alcoholic cocktails.) Overall the staff gave the resort a very warm and "holiday-ish" vibe.
In the resort, there was a big outdoor pool, a heated indoor pool, a playground & a kids cub (aged 4-12), a tennis court (bring your own equipment and i's free, alternatively pay €10 for rackets and balls), an indoor lounge with wi-fi, a games room with a pool table, a bar, a restaurant, a spa, and a gym. There was plenty to do but I would also recommend taking a trip to the town.
If you are a foodie, some cool places to go are Villa Medici, Boneca Bar & Restaurant, Jan, Club Nau (at Ferragudo Beach), Primavera, and definitely go to the Grande Cafe where they have a lovely ice-cream parlour.
Carvoeiro town was very nice, it had a square where there was live music every night, and there was a varied choice of restaurants and cafes surrounding it. Some very nice little shops, I would suggest having a snoop in the Pottery Market. In the town there was a little beach where you could book a boat-ride to go and see the caves.
There was plenty here for the kids, including a water park called "Slide and Splash" (it wasn't just the kids that were having a ball there!) We went to ZooMarine one day, this was a zoo with dolphins, sea lions, birds, an aquarium, and a theme park and water park. Plenty to do and would definitely go back again.
All and all, we really enjoyed our stay at Monte Santo, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is booking a holiday to the Algarve.

Room Tip: Go for a townhouse because they have a small pool in the back and is ideal if you don't like the...

We had a really enjoyable week in Monte Santo travelling with a baby and a toddler. I was initially a bit concerned by the location, a big part of a holiday for us for going out for coffees/dinner in the evening etc and I did want to remain 'tied' to the resort. My concerns was not valid as we found some really nice family friendly spots within walking distance. As all the reviews suggest, the accomodation really is excellent, spacious, clean and comfortable. The afternoon cleaning service very much suited us as we normally headed to the beach in the afternoons. Good places to eat in the town are Onze, Casa Iberia. Walking distance to the resort are the Oliveria Restaurant and Frangos, good family spots. I will summarise the + and - of the holiday, which I hope is helpful for others:
+
accomodation - spacious, clean, comfortable
staff - overall friendly and helpful, Jose was just great with the baby, a real gent!!
pool - good to have an indoor option as the outdoor pool is a bit cool
kids club and playground - great for the toddler, although the kids club is only for 4 years and above but under that, the parent can stay.
shuttle bus to the town& beach - we made use of this every day, a great resource to have.
robes were great in each room
-
wifi access is very patchy, would be great to have this available across the resort
the cofffee is terrible!! Both at breakfast and the coffee available throughout the day to be purchased from the bar.
It would be great if the shuttle returned a bit later from the town, the last one is at 6.10pm which is not suitable to return after dinner. We ended up getting taxis which was a bit awkward with the buggy.
I would suggest to the management of the resort that they provide a pack on arrival of 2 dish washer tablets, 2 washing machine tablets and washing up liquid, even if customers had to pay €5 for this, it would be great to have it for the first couple of days.
I would also suggest to the management that they arrrange welcome drinks by the pool for new arrivals each week, it would be a nice way for families to meet.

Room Tip: if you have children, ask for a room near the pool.
