“Just a building site?”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

I visited in March 2013 and the strip was supporting more builders than tourists. Maybe they are busy getting ready for the Summer season. A lot of the restaurants and shops were closed for refurbishment. The footpaths and road were an obstacle course and not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. I wasn't there at night.

“Going downhill, rapidly.”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

We've been visiting Albufeira for many years and used to stay close to the bottom of the strip near the top of Cardiac Hill. We have enjoyed many good nights out at various bars and restaurants on the strip but we now choose to stay close to the old town and we only wander down the strip during the day just to see how much worse it has become. We're just back from a short visit and were amazed to see that there are now dodgem cars amongst the grotty looking bars on the strip just up from El rancho.

This is probably a great place for stag and hen parties and young binge drinkers but if you don't fit into either of these categories then I suggest that you should give it a wide berth. We now choose to eat and drink in the old town or in the Brisa Sol area.

“Great place for shopping”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

This long strip is a street full of great shops, bars and restaurants. Indeed a great place for shopping for all the souvenirs and gifts you would like to take back home for friends and family.

“John Bull's Home from Home”
Reviewed March 9, 2013

I generally drop by this much touted ( notorious would be a preferable adjective) street in East Albufeira whenever I visit the Algarve. That makes 4 in total with the most recent in March 2013. It is not that I like it; I frankly detest the place, but it is something of a living laboratory of John Bull's children, a real-time study in the anthropology of the Anglo-Saxon race. It is, when fully active, a swinging bustling microcosm of Lower Class Britain that paints a graphic picture of their eating, drinking, and what one may term "entertainment", although the last-named does not always seem to give them much joy. In the first category, Fish and Chip restaurants are foremost, with Indian and Chinese establishments not far behind. There are many opportunities to eat that British staple, Pub Food, but since eating is subservient to the drinking in these palaces of sensuality and lewd companionship, the Pub really falls into the "drinking" category, and shares much common ground with "entertainment". More important than the Shepherds' Pie and Cornish Pasty is the Draught Beer ---- Guinness, Bass, Worthington E, and those many competing "bitter" beverages with which the Brits make public displays of their manhood and capacity for self-inflicted misery. The third category is spread widely among a number of diversion including pool, darts, Lotto, various card games, watching soccer matches at which the Children of Queen Victoria generally get beaten by those of Napoleon, Kaiser Willie, or the
Sons of the Inquisition, not through their own failures but due to those of the referees. Music figures large and loud to assure the neighbourhood that despite the falling Pound and the death of Margaret Thatcher, Britain remains a great country and its people know how to have a good time. Several of the establishments are operated or at least named after well-known Brits who have distinguished themselves in Sports or Entertainment, and even more by Brits who have distinguished themselves in nothing at all. It belongs with New York's Chinatown and Little Italy as the multicultural embrace of an alien way of life by a tolerant and inquisitive host nation, not for scientific curiosity, but because in good times there is a lot of money to be made without too much effort.
