“HAD A GREAT TIME”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2014

This was our first time in the Porto Bay Falesia and it won't be our last. Normally we stay in Madeira at the Porto Mare and the Eden Mar and it was like home from home.
The staff were amazing and a big warm welcome from Nelson the waiter who has moved from Madeira to the Falesia.
The Hotel is in a great location and a short stroll to shops bars and restaurants.
The food is first class only thing missing is the sparkling water with breakfast which we have every morning while staying in Madeira and the hash browns.
We were invited to the Managers meeting and have now received my long awaited gold card which we used everyday for lunch and drinks.
The only downside I would say is the entertainment in the evening that's my only complaint everything else was 1st class and we are most definitely returning next April.

Room Tip: rooms with sea view

We stayed for three nights and wished it was longer. The hotel is just perfect, just wished we had a sea view room. we couldn't of asked for anymore. The attention to detail in the rooms from the toiletries to daily fresh towels ( bath and pool) shaped toilet roll tissue to towel arrangements on the bed with sweets. All of which make it stand out from other hotels. The room bar was well stocked and not over priced.

All The staff were attentive but Carlos stood out to us, he couldn't do enough, excellent waiter. Breakfast was fantastic with beautiful sea views and cava. Perfect start to the day.

We had the buffet evening meal on the 2nd night plenty of choice could of done with more chicken dishes though. Our last evening we decided to eat at the À la carte Restaurant but didn't find there was a great choice so I had brushette and a pizza, which wasn't great. But having saying that we did have pizza at the pool bar in the afternoon on two occasions which were lovely, there is certainly more choice on the pool menu and should stay open later than it does, I would of rather ate there. A beautiful place we will defiantly be returning.

Overall this hotel is good. Stay for 3D2N.

The breakfast is nice. As for dinner buffet, not many choices. No Portuguese food. I love grilled swordfish for my 1st night. Take note that they do not serve drinks during dinner. You have pay extra for the drinks.

Pools are nice and clean.

No Internet access throughout my trip. Downside of this hotel.

Thank you very much for your review. Drinks are not included during dinner and there isn't any information referring that they do. The hotel has an internet service free of charge at the first floor and charged wi-fi service at the rooms. Looking forward to welcome you back at the Porto Bay Falésia. Best regards. We stayed here in March and could not fault it ! We had not enjoyed our stay at a sister hotel@ porto santa maria in Madeira as we had found the reception to be less than good and quite unhelpful. This was the complete opposite ! Nothing was too much trouble, looking up bus routes etc they even helped me with my wifi and were so patient and charming.
We loved the pool although it being so early in the year we were the only ones swimming. We also loved the beach below directly approached down steps from the hotel. So natural and wild {although probably gets very busy in the season}. We had a feeling of being out on our own as we were very much on the edge of the village so it didn't impact on the peace and beauty.
lovely clean rooms and fresh towels and we had a fabulous sea view.we particularly enjoyed our meals in the Basilico as we are not keen on buffets for large numbers of people. The Basilico cooks fresh to order. There were also great restaurants in the village, olhos de agua, especially the Michelin one on the beachfront.
I would have liked to use the sauna free of charge, there was a system where you could only book it for personal use which meant you were tied to a time.

Cant fault the hotel. Great rooms, very clean, towles changed every day. Pool towels provided every day. Not too expsnsive around the pool and food is excellent. Plenty of varied space around the grounds and some very nice peaceful spots. Nice walk to beach and close to the small villiage. Lots of sun beds and a nice polie bunch of visitors. Happy hour is good value ( 6 spitirts and mixed for €17). We really enjoyed our first stay and will be back. Staff were great.

After all these years we could be classed as frequent visitors to O'lhos d'agua and the surrounding area. We have over this time had repeat stays at The Falesia Hotel and at The Riu Palace. Following an event during our last sojourn at The Riu which riuned our holiday we decided on principle not to stay there again but because we like O'lhos wanted to holiday there again so we booked The Porto Bay. We are now converted! The hotel is'nt all that impressive from the outside but it really is a good hotel which is spotlessly clean throughout. Rooms were cleaned and vacuumed and towels changed every day and bed linen changed at your request. We paid extra for a sea view which although quite expensive is worth it. Our room was on the 1st floor and the view somewhat obstructed by trees but a nice outlook nonetheless. When I stay again, I will pay extra again for a sea view but will ask for a room on a higher floor.Staff are pleasant and respectfully unobtrusive. The pool area and gardens are peaceful with an abundance of sun beds (which are good quality). Clean towels for the pool/spa are left in the room every day so there is none of this trotting to reception and begging for new ones. A point of interest however is the restriction on what can be consumed at the pool areas. We went to the pool bar to buy a cornetto/ice lolly but were advised that we could not consume this at our sun lounger! I can fully understand restrictions on food/drink etc but a veto on a harmless cornetto seems extreme! The hotel bar has a happy hour between 5pm and 6 pm but the price reduction only applies to some drinks. I had a cosmopolitan cocktail (not on the drinks menu) and although good was the smallest I've ever had! We did partake of the happy hour on one occasion but the bar was so lacking in people and atmosphere that we did not bother again. There is'nt much improvement in the atmosphere in the evening either and entertainment is mixed. I do'nt mind piano before dinner but not as the whole night's entertainment 3/4 nights a week. The bar should really have the happy hour between 7pm and 8pm or provide a reduced price cocktail of the day and I think would be enjoyed by more guests. Bar prices are extortionate and very expensive in comparison with other hotels. This put us off spending much time there. Dinner is served between 6.30pm and 9.30pm and I welcomed the fact that guests can choose when to come for dinner and where to sit. (This is not the case in some other hotels and is restrictive). Food quality is variable - on some evenings there was good choice, plentiful supply and it was hot but on others it was the opposite. If I could recommend one change it would be to improve the food.
Overall this is a good hotel, we enjoyed a pleasant comfortable stay with good service and would stay again.

Room Tip: Sea View worth considering if you want to spend the extra.

This was our second visit to the hotel, and as the first time we found the staff extremely courteous, the hotel clean & the food good.
Can't say the same about the Bar entertainment or the Broadband though.
We walked into the bar twice, & straight back out again, twice.
We purchased the Broadband for the seven days, the same as last year, but whereas we had a front facing room last year with good Broadband access, our rear facing room had next to nothing this year, which cost me nearly £30 in Roaming charges. The guy on reception made a a point of telling us that they would make an exception with us and refund our payment. Very good of him wouldn't you say? The manager then offered us the use of the business room (just a desk really!) on the 1st floor which had Internet access, but not convenient to go down two floors and practically half the length of the hotel every time either of us wanted to look up something on the internet or send/receive an email.
A simple rule to remember is, that when you book, make sure you specify if you need it, a room that DOES access the Internet AT THE TIME OF BOOKING.
The poolside cafe staff are also very strict with what you can and can't have to accompany your meal. No flexibility AT ALL. If you want wedges with your sandwich instead of the dreadful crisps provided, FORGET IT!
Not the sort of service you'd expect from a Four Star hotel. I've had more choice at a Little Chef.
Lastly, & not really the Hotel's fault I suppose, if you're going for a swim in the outside pool in April, get ready for a shock. The water feels as cold as the Atlantic Ocean that it overlooks, and there is no lifeguard on duty at the in, or outside pool. Again this may be because it's early in the year, but a surprise never the less, as you could drown from shock when you dive in.
All in all a good hotel, excellent staff especially the Housekeepers, but not in my opinion, worthy of the four stars I'm afraid.

Thank you very much for your review and comments. As explained internet access is the same all over the Hotel and during the period we had many guest using the Internet which lowered the capacity of the broadband, our excuses for that, I offered as well for your convenience one of our offices with computer which was denied, presently we are changing the internet supplier and increasing the capacity. Outdoor pool is presently heated by solar panels which wasn't the case last year and off course April doesn't have the same outdoor temperatures like July/August. We regret again the internet situation on which you had a refund and be sure on your next stay the problem will be totally solved. Looking forward to welcome you back at the Porto Bay Falésia.
