“very basic and old”
Reviewed September 17, 2012

the hotel is not a hotel its a B and B , there are no facilities in any of the rooms, they are old but clean, and the steps are a killer after the walk up from the old town, the staff are very friendly and its very clean, the pool aea is very quiet, the views are amazing but you pay for that with the distance from everywhere, the resort is lovely, the people are very friendly, we didnt have a bad meal in any of the restruants in the old town, only trouble was too many to choose from, lots of entertainment in the bars, live bands DJs in most bars, loved portugal would deffinently go back but stay a little closer to the old town. but most hotels are on a hill,

Room Tip: try to get a front facing room as the views are stunning, our room was on the side so didnt get any...

Like most of the other reviews it isn't good......
We booked the hotel as it was cheap and we needed somewhere to put our stuff while we went out on an almost all night party. Don't get me wrong we are over 50 and no youngsters at all but we like a party or two. The hotel is up on a steep hill and if you got any kind of difficulties walking this is definetly not the hotel for you. When we rolled in at 5 am we had to keep the hotel room and patio doors open as the stink of sewage was horrendous. Luckily enough, we did not have any valuables in the room apart from my husbands wallet which he kept in the bed with him.... Just as well as the room was on street level opposite the car park.
staff must have had enough as its end of the season. They were not too happy to say the least.
Breakfast didn't look too good, even if we had been able to eat it I don't think I would have.

So, if you want somewhere to keep your stuff....... find a locker!! And carry on partying. Don't bother with this Hotel.

My friend and I got back from staying in Hotel da Gale last week, and having only booked 3 hours before we left for Luton, we were pleasantly suprised by the whole experience. The hotel is situated in a prime location, it has nearby restaurants, bars, mini-markets, Albufeira old town is merely a 5 minute walk, as is the beach. Yes the hotel is at the top of a fairly steep hill, and is probably not suitable for anyone with disabilities or young children in push-chairs, but as I said, it takes just 5 minutes to get up/down. I would also like to add that if it was not for the location of the hotel (at the top of the hill) then the views would be no where near as amazing as they are. The pool over looks the sea and the old town, it is quiet and peaceful, but close enough to the nightlife and hussle and bussle. In response to those of you saying that the hotel is like a maze, I beg to differ, there are not enough rooms for it to be classed as a maze, and the premisis is very well sign posted. I would also like to add, that we were in fact given a tour of the hotel on arrival - taken to our room, and shown the pool, bar, breakfast area, reception. The staff were extremely helpful, - we had issues with our tranfers (arranged by us, not the hotel) and they were extremely organised in arranging for us to get to the airport on time. They ensured that we were awake on our day of departure, by knocking on the door to our bedroom, and they made us feel extremely welcome at all times. The hotel was extremely clean, with our bedsheets and linen being changed twice in 4 nights. Yes the room is basic, but you get what you pay for and in my opinion cleanliness is of paramount importance. There is no air conditioning, but by closing the curtains during the day you can reduce the temperature of your room, we had a large window that allowed for a constant breeze to flow through the room, and there is a safe so your belongings are protected if you chose to leave the window open during the day. There is a computer in reception with internet access, and wifi is free throughout the hotel. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Hotel Da Gale and both my friend and I would return tomorrow. People need to remember that you get what you pay for, my expectations were in fact much lower and I was pleasantly suprised by the location, friendliness, cleanliness, pool, and overall ambience.

Unfortunately all the reviews are correct and I cannot see any future for this hotel, it has been let go to far and is in need of a complete upgrade, We found the staff fine and helpfull but the whole experience was not a nice one, probably our fault as we choose the cheapest hotel just to get away from the English weather we are having, We did upgrade to a seaview with a balcony (thank God) but would never consider going there again.
The bathroom was a disgrace with staining to both the bath and wash basin due to constant dripping of the taps, I could not turn off the hot water tap to thr hand basin and asked for the tap washer to be changed, even saying I would do it myself if they gave me the equipment, it was eventually changed the next day but none of the other plumbing in the bathroom checked that did need attention another problem was the dogs that were in the apartment block next to the hotel, they never shut up barking, and late night revellrs returning to the hotel making a noise, which was most irritating.
The hilly location is not the fault of the hotel and did not bother us to much as we like to keep fit, all in all if the hotel is not taken by the scruff of the neck and completely renovated, it will not last much longer.

Room Tip: Glad we upgraded to a balcony with a sea view or we would not have stayed, would have left the first...

Firstly if you have any trouble with mobility, don't stay here. The hotel is built up the side of a hill, and is like a maze inside with steps everywhere.
On arrival we were shown into room #405 in which the stink from sewage from the bathroom was excrutiating. The room was small and tatty. On complaining about the smell we were moved to room #403 which was larger, had a balcony and although basic was clean and smell free. We were booked in for 1 week from 1st October to 8th October 2011.
Breakfast consisted of Vile tasting orange juice from a vending machine, luke warm coffee from another machine, also vile tasting. There was bread, butter, milk, cornflakes, oranges and apples which were awful.
The pool area was clean, although there were no umbrellas which were really needed as the temperature reached well over 90 degrees every day while we were there.
On the whole, we thought the hotel basic but would have been OK until we arrived back from a walk in the morning of Thursday 6th Oct to be told to pack our bags immediately as the hotel had a water problem and there would be no water for nine days until it was fixed and we were being moved to the Regina Apartments for the rest of our stay (see review on Regina), which were terrible.
I do not consider that we were told the truth here as on returning later in the day to pick up some perfume which my wife had left, I found that a decorators and maintenance firm had moved in and already made a start on the hotel. It transpired that, on talking later to one of the staff who we happened to meet, the hotel had planned to close on the 6th until next year for refurbishment, although they accepted our booking and also the booking of another couple who had a further week to stay.
I will say that the girls on reception were friendly and helpful although they were only trainees and were only doing whatever they had been told by the management. At no time did we ever get to speak to a manager.
When we asked about a refund for the 2 days of breakfasts that we had to pay for we were told that we were no longer clients of the Da Gale but clients of the Regina apartments, (although these are apparently owned by the same person) and we got nowhere.
All in all, what should have been a good holiday was ruined.

We arrived at de gale at 10.20pm on 22/8/11. We went to check in in what looked like a hostel only to be told that because we hadn't arrived before 8pm they sold our room and they were now fully booked. Not only were we disappointed in the look of the place but the staff were awful, they said we should have been told by last minute.com and that isn't nothing to do with them, we asked for help to find another hotel and the only place she called was miles away (strange) 5 fully booked hotels later we found a lovely hotel,we paid 85euros for the night, then the next night before 8pm returned to the hostel, horrible place, and this wasn't a cheap holiday, the staff do not understand customer service, they do not care about you only your money. We left after 3nights.

The staff lied and sent me to a room that had so much mildew and mold it should be condemned. The rooms were dirty and there was no hot water. At breakfast, the coffee & juice machines did not work. The staff should work at a prison. If you like hassles this is your place.
