“Lovely Holiday But !!!”
Reviewed May 1, 2014

Had a week here from the 16 April didn't arrival till very late so on seeing are room we were abit disappointed to find no balcony or fridge as we had been told upon booking all rooms had balconies and it does advertise this on Booking.com - Each guestroom is elegantly furnished and has a luxury bathroom. A balcony with views over the tranquil fishing village or the Atlantic Ocean is featured in the bright, air-conditioned rooms.
The next morning we spoke to the receptionist and was told the hotel was full so couldn't move us to another room and if we wanted a fridge it was 4 euros a day not very helpful or apologetic.

We have just returned from our visit to the hotel and can comfortably say it is a fantastic example of 3 star establishment.

The room was clean, comfortable and had plenty of storage, the en suite was in great condition and the room had all the amenities required, including a fridge.

The rest of the hotel was in good condition and the staff were extremely polite and helpful in every encounter we had with them.

Location is good; within a gentle stroll of the hotel is a supermarket, a selection of restaurants and some truly stunning beaches. Walking into Albufeira took around 35 minutes.

The breakfast choice was a real highlight, the sausages, scrambled eggs and beans were a staple for us on most mornings but also available were fresh fruit, juices, rolls, cake, meats, cheese and cereals. All of this is eaten on the top floor roof terrace which has some distant views of the ocean and is a lovely way to start the day.

If there could be one gripe about the hotel, it would be that the pool area is on the small side, having said that, we spent most of our time at the beaches so it wasn't a huge issue.

Great location on main bus route for tourists that don't drive. Easy walk to beach locations approx 20 minutes. Staff exceptionally helpful and friendly . Towels changed regularly . Rooms have small fridge and safety deposit box. Breakfast continental and plentiful. Restaurants nearby are good value also.

Room Tip: I preferred road view balcony with view towards sea. Plenty afternoon sun and traffic noise is a min...

We like (liked) the Velamar so much we have been regular visitors for years. We were last there in October with another holiday booked for May 2014. But it all went wrong. We booked our room for May 2014 almost 12 months ago but, just a few days ago, were told the booking agency we used had gone into administration; another £140 was required to secure our room. Astonished, we contacted the Velamar to ask if they would be kind enough to honour the original price. They declined. At the same time, we discovered there had been a change of management and wonderful staff, who we regarded as friends, such as Marcelo and Adriano, had left. We were deeply disappointed. We accept the old prices were incredible and a rise was inevitable but surely increases should not hit people retrospectively? After a week of deliberations we decided not to pay the extra and to try somewhere new. I wish the new management the best of luck but why change something that is not broken? In our eyes, the Velamar of old was perfect. The higher charges mean it now blends into the price range of many other hotels in the Algarve. We have ended up getting a fantastic deal at a four star hotel nearby.

Dear Ramsfan33,
Thank you very much for your review but did I read correctly, your travel agency went bust and we are guilty for it ? Great that you've found a fantastic deal nearby, thanks for returning to the Algarve and we wish you a great holiday. Should you wish to visit us at the Velamar please do. Kind regards, Joao Costa-General Manager

Just back from a very relaxing week in the Velamar staying 15th-22nd April, yes it's under new management and they have made some changes. The breakfast room has been changed the most with in my opinion for the better, you now have a hot dish added Scrambled eggs and Baked beans which for the 7 days we were there were hot and fresh, the fresh fruit is still available but it is now peeled and sliced into portions(no more putting into your bag to have on the beach ha ha)the cakes are also sliced into small portions, when on holiday i like a mug of tea so i brought my own mug and 2 presses of the hot water button and i had a steaming hot mug to the top. There are two members of the old staff still serving in the breakfast room and are still very helpful, there was also 1 barman from my last visit still working the very quiet and relaxing bar.The reception staff were all new but also very friendly and polite. This hotel is still excellent value for money and hopefully will stay that way, if holidaymakers do not like the changes they should tell the management .I have my usual two weeks booked for June 2014 and hopefully all will have settled down by then. Our room was cleaned and towels changed every day. This was my 6th stay at this hotel and i look forward to many more.

Room Tip: ask for a poolside room

We were there in the 1st week of April, and it would appear from reviews since then that we were just in time. The new management were just taking over while we were there, and the changes during our week were minimal, although it is fair to say that the differences in the breakfasts were very noticeable towards the end of our stay, and not for the better. However for what we paid I was amazed at what the hotel offered, and wondered where we would see where the corners were being cut. I have to say that while we were there I didn't find anything, although I am not now surprised that the new management are changing things. Our rooms were excellent, with a pool view and quiet enough, although there was a little noise from the bar late on (We were on the ground floor, just yards from the bar). However this didn't spoil our enjoyment at all. We found the staff very friendly and helpful, although the staff at the end of our stay were not the same staff as at the start of our stay. The location is ideal, with restaurants and cafes very close by, and just a short walk to the beach area. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel, and its a quick ride into Albufeira. For us the new town was dire, just bars and more bars etc. We much prefered the Old Town, where we found a very nice cafe, where we could sit and watch the world go by. Fabulous, and we enjoyed exploring the quieter areas of the old town too.

All in all The Velamar is (was?) excellent value for money, and we can only hope that the new management is careful with the changes and don't do anything that will spoil the fabulous reputation this great little hotel has built up.

Room Tip: Pool view rooms are much nicer than the rooms facing the road. Ask in advance of your stay

Have just arrived back from staying at the Velamar hotel, so clean, comfortable in a perfect location within walking distance to beach, fishing village, nightlife and some great restaurants. The breakfast was the best I've had compared to staying at any 5 Star hotels, I hate to say it, but the breakfast lasted us all day till dinner as everything from the fruit, fresh bread rolls, scrambled eggs, baked beans, cakes, coffee, juices, cereal etc, etc, etc, was perfect and was sooo delicious we were so full up. Would highly recommend this hotel to families, couples and young at heart.
