We stayed at The Velamar for 10 nights and overall were extremely impressed. The reception and bar areas are immaculate, modern and comfortable. The poolside is of a good standard - clean, spacious, with plenty of sun beds. The pool is very clean, however is not heated which put me off - even my boyfriend didn't go in much because it was so cold! There is a small poolside cafe open during the daytime which offers simple snacks which are reasonably priced (however try Soft Cafe next door for fantastic food and lots of choice).
We absolutely loved the breakfasts at the Velamar Hotel. It is continental buffet style however there is loads of choice and always as much as you can eat! We were impressed by the restaurant staff who were very efficient and continually replenished the food (and even stopped people pushing in when there was a queue...although that was rare anyway). The restaurant is beautiful, situated on the top floor with fantastic views of the sea.
Now for the rooms.... Unfortunately the bedrooms are the only thing that let this hotel down. They are shabby and dated, however you can't really complain for the price. Although the white bed sheets were clean, the quilt laid on top was stained as were the pillows which we found stuffed in the wardrobe and which I strongly suspect had not been changed since the last guests! By day 6 our bed sheets had still not been changed (although maids tend to the rooms every day) and so we had to visit reception to ask. To give them credit the sheets were promptly changed after our request. The bathrooms are far more modern and are very clean.
The staff are very good, efficient and professional and the good service continued after we left. Unfortunately on arrival home I realised I had left a sentimental item at the hotel. I emailed them to ask if they could try to find it and send it back to me in the UK. I offered to pay postage. They found the item and posted it immediately on receipt of the email, with no request for payment. I was very impressed with this service (their email correspondence was a little vague however the main thing is that I got it back).
Finally, I can not recommend Olhos D'Agua highly enough - as long as you're looking for a quiet holiday with nice restaurants and low key bars. The village is beautiful with cobbled streets and is immaculate (not like a lot of dingy, smelly holiday resorts in Spain and Greece). The village 'centre' is set at the bottom of a hill next to the beach - beautiful day and night. Also make sure you make time for a few visits to Vilamoura which is stunning with lots of restaurants, bars and shops set round a marina!
We had a fantastic holiday and would strongly recommend the Velamar as long as you're not planning on spending much time in the room!
