This was our second stay at the three star Hotel Velamar at Torre da Medronheira on the eastern outskirts of Albufeira. We were travelling there by car and preferred a quieter area that was on the outskirts of Albufeira rather than right in the centre of town, or bang on the beach. It is also fairly centrally located along the Algarve coast which suited us as we wanted to do some exploring along the coast. From this point you can easily reach Tavira to the east and Sagres to the west within a day trip.
We liked the easy access, the hotel's own free parking and location close to Albufeira. The hotel was spotlessly clean, the bedrooms spacious, comfortable and quiet, with tv (including a Sky News channel), telephone and adjustable air conditioning. There were balconies big enough to sit out on without being cramped. The buffet breakfast was excellent, with a wide range of cereals, breads & croissants, fresh fruits and fruit salad (not tinned), yoghurts, sliced meats and cheeses. The hotel had a good sized bar and lounge area plus an adjoining tv area. There was an internet area, including computers, for those who need to maintain home links or forward plan their stay. Reception was manned 24/7 with English speaking staff, who were only too pleased to be of assistance; in fact, all the hotel staff were polite and most welcoming. The pool is relatively small, but popular and kept clean and tidy. The hotel has its own free car parking area which is reasonably capacious. The only criticism that I might have is that I found the internet connection a little slow and clunky. That's it - nothing else.
On the occasion of our 7 day visit this time, the cleanliness of the room was up to the previous excellent standard for the first three days. However, for the remaining time my wife and myself felt that standards then slipped when a different room cleaner took over. Quality fell from 100% to about 85%-90%, on this one element. That’s the trouble with being spoilt, perhaps one expects too much? That said, we both felt that this hotel is the best 3 star hotel that we have stayed at for many a year and when you consider everything that you get for your money it represents outstanding value.
There are a wide selection of eating establishments close to the hotel an good, frequent bus services along the coast road in front of the hotel, with a stop just across the road. Journey time is but a few minutes into Albufeira with the centre of the old town 6km away. Taxis are always buzzing about and, as you would expect, hotel reception can call one in a couple of minutes. For those who like to shop, there is an enormous mall at Guia about 6km out of Albufeira to the north west, just alongside the N125.

Room Tip: Unless you don't mind being a little aware of the pool users when using the balcony, don't choose a room on the ground floor at the back of the hotel overlooking the pool.

This is a great, cheap, clean 3 star hotel. It's not luxurious by any means but it does the basics really well. Great staff who were very helpful, nice breakfast. Big clean rooms with nice balcony. Free wi-fi. And nice bar/cafe.
The downsides for me were the location (oldhos d'agos) which is about an 8euro taxi journey to oldtown/Newtown. The flip side of this is that the restaurants beside hotel are cheaper than those in town (significantly) as is the beer and there's a great supermarket 2 minute walk away. Another downside is the small pool, more for sitting round than swimming in.

All in all, great value for money.

We came back to the Velamar for the second time in two years. This establishment in Olhos d' Agua is on the edge of a small residential area away from the main part of the village. It has excellent eating establishments right on it's doorstep. The hotel is spotless, nice rooms and bathrooms and most rooms have a balcony either overlooking the pool or the surrounding streets. Being on the edge of this residential area it suffers from (No fault of the Hotel) incessant dogs barking and cocks crowing during the day. Breakfast which is a substantial continental is served in the third floor (roof top) restaurant. The staff, who were all the same as two years ago are very friendly and helpful. Overall an excellent hotel such a shame about the dogs!!

Great hotel! Very quiet and relaxing atmosphere. All areas, including the pool side were kept immaculately clean by hard working cleaning staff. The snack bar beside pool area provides a good choice of light meals and drinks, all at a very reasonable price ,eg. burger ,chips and drink for 6 euros or large slice of pizza and drink for 3 euros.
The hotel bar serves great cocktails, 6 euros each and they are the equivalent of 2 cocktails at home. 'Caipi One' drinks -crushed fresh fruit, crushed ice and vodka only 5 Euros and really refreshing. both are great value.
Bedrooms are thoroughly cleaned and fresh towels provided on a daily basis.Staff are friendly and courteous, always willing to help with any queries.
Great location with cafes and restaurants on either side of the hotel. Would recommend Jollies and Soft Caffe. There is a well stocked supermarket 5 mins away and village restaurants, cafes ,bars and beach 10-15 mins walk away.
Plenty of shops to browse around and great prices. We are a couple in our late 40's and stayed at the Velamar 29 May - 5 June, we intend to go back it was so good and we enjoyed the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.
