As the title suggests, this is our third time to the Hotel Velamar and Olhos De Agua, over the last three years.

We travelled as a family of five (children of 15, 12 and 7) and although we arrived on a later flight we were met at reception with a smile and made to feel very welcome. As it was early in the season, whilst the resort was fairly quiet we found the hotel to be reasonably busy, which is always a good sign. We stayed B&B and left breakfast as late as we dared - served to 10:30 - before making our way to (for some mornings) a very busy service, not to worry though as there was always a table or one came available, which was cleaned and prep’d very quickly. Plenty of choice at breakfast for all of us: cereals, juices, yoghurt, savoury meats and cheese, or for our kids croissants and cakes!

There was some maintenance going on at the hotel, for example the odd broken tile was being replaced by the pool area and cleaning the exterior walls, though none of this caused any inconvenience.

We went to a couple of our favourites: Soft Caffe with Bruno and his family and Nelsons (which is a bit further up into Olhos), both of which offer reasonably priced snacks and light meals. We also visited the clean and sandy beaches, we suggest Praia Marie Luisa is the better one.

We find this location suits ourselves, it is a fairly quiet area and a good base if you want to explore this part of the Algarve.

Overall, we enjoyed our week and our stay at the Velamar and thoroughly recommend this place - it is safe, cleaned daily and delivers a standard of service above the three star rating.

Room Tip: Road side rooms can be a little noisy from the traffic

We stayed at this hotel in November 2012. It was recommended to us by a Portuguese man. It was very cheap, clean and comfortable, not luxurious but ideal for a short break. Easy access to local restaurants, would recommend it.

Booked this hotel & although it had fantastic review I was still a little apprehensive about going there with a 6 month old as it was only a 3 star but I should not have worried it was fantastic the breakfast was amazing, the only downside was a freezing cold swimming pool! Location was excellent close to beaches & town, some gorgeous places to eat just on doorstep & extremely cheap set menus, will defiantly return to Portugal & this hotel.

We stayed in the Velamar for five nights just before Easter. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable. We asked for a couple more pillows and these were produced within minutes despite the staff being busy. Breakfast was excellent quality, 'real' orange juice not concentrate, lots of choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, meats, cheeses, breads and pastries. The staff were amazing, I've seldom seen such cheerful efficiency. Not sure if I would like to spend a week in Olhos d'agua but we were just using the hotel as a base to explore the Algarve as we had a car so it didn't matter. Large, free car park for clients. Can't comment on the bar as we didn't use it. We paid 20 euros a night which was incredible value for money. You can pay that much for breakfast alone in some places! Thanks, Velamar, for such a great stay.

Room Tip: Our room on the first floor overlooking the pool was excellent.

We booked Hotel Velamar for 2 reasons, 1 the excellent reviews and 2 the price which I might add was £132 for the room for 1 week including breakfast. What we got was exactly what I expected and more. The staff were great, the bar reasonable and very comfortable with free wifi and 5 star cleanliness in all parts of the hotel. The rooms were cleaned every day. The breakfast was really nice, fresh meats cheese, bread and fruit every day, some may have been out of a tin but there was also fresh fruits and a good selection of fruit juices, teas and coffee on offer.

The location was exactly as I expected having read previous reviews and that again was one of the reasons I chose this hotel. I prefer a quieter location that is close to the beach but has access to restaurants and bars and we always hire a car to visit nearby places. The only one thing that I would suggest is that when booking, you ask for a twin room which has softer mattresses than the doubles. The hotel has just had new mattresses and the doubles are really hard. When we mentioned this to the hotel staff it was not a problem and they gave my other half a topper for his bed as he has a bad back.

Overall I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. We traveled with our 15 year old daughter and had no complaints from her.

The hotel is clean, the staff is very helpful and polite, though the location is a bit off, to say the least. Well, if you like walking then it's a 35-minute walk to The Strip, and from there 20-something more minutes to get to the city centre. Taxis from here to the Strip or the city centre are about 5 or 6 €. The bus (which runs about 8 or 10 times a day most days) is 2.20 € per person.

Cleanliness and good value for money, are vital attributes for us picky budget-travellers. Hotel Velamar delivers both of that.

The breakfast is good, but not with a great variety. Four types of bread, some yoghurts, chorizo, ham and cheese. And then a table with fruits and cereal. Most of the fruits are tinned which is a dissapointment. But overall the breakfast is OK for a shorter stay; after a week or so you'll have tired.

So the overall experience is positive. The nearby area doesn't provide any real variety of restaurants and definitely no shops or sights. If you want to do anything you're bound to go to Albufeira. There might be some spots of interest in Olhos d' Agua, which is reached by a 20-minute walk in the opposite direction of Albufeira. The hotel itself is worth the pretty small nightly rate you pay, but is more for adventurers than for people looking for leisure.
