Hotel Montechoro
Ranked #130 of 154 Hotels in Albufeira
Reviewed September 18, 2012

The hotel has potential to be a great hotel, unfortunately only potential.

Pretty much everything needs a refit...

Rooms
They are a good size, however furniture is shows its age (A reoccurring theme...) though the beds were comfortable. Bathroom also a nice size, with a nice shower, but looked tired/shabby.
The rooms have a safe - But the old kind with a key rather than an electronic keycode.
No mini bar - Reading someone else's review, apparently you can get these at charge - This is not advertised anywhere. The rooms have an old CRT TV made by Nokia (I didn't even realise they made TVs) But cannot get any English stations (I suspect that this is due to the digital change over) but there is the BBC world station (A few of the Portuguese/Spanish stations show American shows with subtitles).
Maids did an ok job, nothing too far beyond new towels/making beds.

Food
I stayed on a B&B basis, after two days we ate out every morning - Very poor.
The food around the pool was better, ham and cheese on toast etc. The service at this bar was great, no fault of the staff there just wasn't enough of them and they were poorly stocked. (IE if someone ordered a sandwich no one else could get served for 5mins while the barstaff went and made it).

Pool
The pool was ok, nothing special - The sunbeds were the kind with stretched plastic fibres as a base, not the most comfortable in the world.

Bar
It was open in the evenings, but i never saw anyone in there - A nice pool table (pay for an hour).

There is internet access available from reception (A wifi code to put in your laptop/phone etc). However this is only available in the reception area - No where else. (not sure why they wouldn't put this in the bar where they can serve you drinks and get more money out of you? Seems odd...). Note there are no computers to use other than the WiFi access.

On the last day when wandering around the resort we found another pool that belongs to the hotel (with no sign posts on how to get to other than the one on the door to the pool. This has a bigger pool, a separate bar/pool tables etc and nicer sun beds.

In general the hotel needs new carpets/painting inside and out/new furniture. It seems they have cut alot of corners.. IE the flagpoles outside of the hotel don't actually have any flags - Which looks....odd.

The strip it is at the top of has a few bars and restaurants - Tip, avoid the restaurant called "Doris".

Best place for food/drinking is the old town which costs around 5 Euro's (If you can find a taxi, the taxi rank isnt the most active rank in the world).

Think that covers most things, its not a bad hotel if you can get it cheap - But i think calling it a four star hotel is beyond generous!

Room Tip: Ask for pool facing - I was charged 10 Euro a day extra, but was worth it to get a view of the sea...

Never again, no tea or coffee in the room . Charged 28 euros for a fridge , miserable staff , restaurant food was awful, tables were not cleared , restaurant on top roof was not even open . The only entertainment was the piano bar which was empty.
This is no way near a 4 star hotel.

Ignore most of the Bad comments - Yes the hotel is old and a bit outdated but it is what you pay for. Stayed here for 6 nights at start of September. Food was Really good both Breakfast and Dinner Buffet while Bar food was grand.
Rooms were Huge and cleaned everyday with fresh towels provided. AC worked great for us.
Pool was great size and very clean. Our room on the 8th floor had amazing views over the City, The Strip, Sea and We could even seethe city of Villa Mora.

Irish Bar 'Erins Isle' beside Hotel is worth a visit.

If you can book either a Jeep Safari or Quad Biking Tour with Dr Love. Well worth it

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view on a high floor

Very very very poor and not worth the star rating or the money. Don't get me wrong my husband, friends and I had a very good holiday in Albufuria but that wasn't because of the hotel. Thank goodness we only stayed B & B.. On arrival the reception staff were miserable and unwelcoming. They were extremly slow and not very informative, infact the worst reception I have ever experienced ( evening staff much friendlier) The rooms were huge, best sized room I have stayed in, however the hotel is very very dated and really needs some TLC. Other reviews are detailed and I would agree with all they say. Our towels were changed daily however the rooms didn't get the attention I am used to and so I didn't feel the maid service was to a four star standard. Towels old and tatty, bathroom rusty and although not dirty it was dirty looking. Shower was ok, beds comfortable and clean. The TV's are old if your lucky enough to get one that works. Balcony never got cleaned the whole time we were there. Carpets in the rooms are old and well worn. Breakfast was acceptable; I would rate it as a 2 star not a four. Restaurant staff need to learn to smile, one young girl was so nice I feel sad she has to work with the others...The pool area was actually quite nice but the umbrellas and sun beds are well past there sell by date !!!! by about 20yrs.. The pool bar appeared to always low on stock, on our last day they had 1 packet of crisps left.... I needed 3 packets. Thinking that it was September and perhaps end of season for the Hotel I asked when they closed the Hotel, "we never close" the waiter replied... I nearly fell over... there is no entertainment in the hotel, no music around the pool, no waiter service by the pool or the food area. It appears this hotel expects you to kind of do everything for yourself. Sorry if that sounds lazy but all the four star Hotels I have been in are more "active" with their service. We had a nosey around the hotel and its a faboulous building with loads of potential, including on the 10th floor roof top views to die for. You are not allowed to sunbath here as it is appears to be a fire escape only. There is also an entertainment room near the shop (open 9am -12pm) that is standing idle. It's so sad to see. It really needs a lot of money spending on it to bring it in to the 20th century. Surrounding area is also looking very sad, Erins bar is a good night out and do good food, however their prices are very expensive so be careful, we went in a couple of times for our last drink and a bit of a sing song. I would recommend a restaurant called O Leao, just down the road on the left hand side. Beautiful Potuguese cooking. Fish that is just fab and listening to other diners steaks are beautiful, cooked to your liking on a hot stone that is brought to you. We dined there twice and wish we had gone another night to taste other items on the menu... including the homemade puddings. The Empty glass pub is a good night if you want a cheap drink and watch a bit of footy. The waiter is wonderful and does the best Sangria you will ever taste..next door is Senhor Frogs which do the best Pizza ever. We had a wonderful time in Albufria but would stay in the old town next time. Hotel Montechoro is dated and dissapointing. Spend your money on another Hotel that shows interest in their guests and their staff !!!

Well, I never believed in time travel untill I stayed here. The place is so old I thought I was on the film set of Quincy. Its so old and dated.

My wife and I were in room 538, with terrible aircon, seperate beds and a view of disused tennis courts.

The pool was full of Oirish drunks, I think the only flight from Ireland goes straight to the hotel.

The pool is cold and unclean, and the bar at the pool rip you off. 2.50 for a Fanta, yet in the shops closeby, next to yet another Irish bar, it's only 0.85.

The food was the same everyday.... Terrible.

Its close enough to the main strip, its a nice walk down hill, but a nightmare walking back up.

The best place for food was the Blues bar 2 next to Coconuts, brilliant food, and 10 euros cheaper for a meal the same as other places.

The hotel is clean though. Beds made and new towels in the room.

To get a late check out, its 40 euros untill 16:30hrs. Normal check out is 12 noon.

Get the hotel to book you a taxi for the airport run. It's only 31:50, but if you book direct it will be between 46 - 75

The Montechoro hotel is an attractive looking 10 story building in a reasonably good just out location, all rooms have good size balcony’s.
The hotel has a small round swimming pool & a kids pool with plenty of sun loungers although they are very old looking things sagging in the middle but they do the job if your not so bothered about your back, we managed to find free ones at any time of the day.
The pool area is clean & the water is chest deep with no diving facility's, we found it very noisy around the pool & there was nowhere to hide from the noise because it is all on one level. Smoking is allowed around the pool & we always seemed to get downwind of some selfish lumps that smoked 4 fags an hour, we being none smokers think a designated smoking section would have been far better.
The hotel location is about 2 kilometres from the centre of the old town at the top of the strip with plenty of bars & eating places down the main drag in the direction of the sea, just come out of the main reception turn right then look to your left & go down through the car no entry signs & your on the main strip down to the beach.
The hotel states that it has a 5 days a week free bus service that takes you to & from either the old town centre or the beach 4 times a day starting at 10am & finishing at 6pm, don't rely on it because it was ok for the first day or 2 then the 28 seater bus got changed for a 7 seater ( see pics ) so most of the 20 or so waiting passengers had to wait at the roadside for a further 45 mins or even an hour for the third or fourth run, not so funny in 35 degrees of heat, most walked away & paid for a taxi.
We had a room on the 8th floor & the views are fantastic, we had a sea view although we didn't ask or pay for one & it said on our booking confirmation "inland view" the room was very spacious with 2 single beds quite comfortable with clean linen, the bathroom was a decent size with an amazingly powerful shower & loads of hot water.
The aircon that the hotel claims to have is centrally piped to each room & it hardly works, if you put your hand over the outlet it is just like a normal fan blowing on you, we complained about it & the engineer came to the room & explained that it is the same in every room & he went on to tell us how it is piped to all areas of the hotel & sure enough the main entrance & all other areas of the hotel do not seem to have any noticeable cooling facility's, not so good if your there in the middle of a heatwave like us.
The toilets in the reception area smell very strongly of urine.
The reception is under staffed & you somtimes have to Que a long time to get served & don't be surprised if the not so happy over worked receptionist just cuts you off to answer the phone for 5 mins in the middle of dealing with you.
The rooms are reasonably clean but very dated in 1970's style dark wood & grandmas carpet with plenty of stains. One of the 2 wash basins in our bathroom had a big crack in it & so did the loo, the bathroom fittings chrome had all worn down to the brass but everything apart from Two taps did work ok.The room cleaners seem to have run out of bleach for the bathrooms because some of the white Porcelain is stained yellow.
Luckily the room didn't smell dirty so we put up with the dated damaged & stained aspects of it without complaining.
Be prepared for the extra hotel charges, room safe €12 a week + €25 deposit for the key (cash).
Room fridge €4 per day,
€1 to phone you a taxi,
Internet wifi €1 per devise per half hour, ridiculous ! most hotels especially 4 star have free wifi, wake up Montechoro it's 2012 there are lots of bars around the area that have high speed wifi free when you buy a €1 beer or a coffee & you can log on for as long as you like, the empty glass bar is best & closest that we found 400 mtrs down the strip on your right.
We stayed on a b&b basis & the breakfast was buffet style & very poor indeed, bacon was 90
% fat, beans pure salt, boiled eggs dark green in the middle, tomatoes unripe green & hard, where they get these green tomatoes from is a mystery because all the local shops that sell tomatoes have big juicy bright red succulent ones on offer ??
The only thing we found to eat that was edible at breakfast was the fried eggs, bread buns & cheese, even the vending machine coffee was not fit to drink but fresh orange was really nice it was also in a vending machine & boxed so even the Montechoro chef could not spoil it.
Some poor inmates we spoke to had booked half board & they all said that the evening meal made breakfast seem good so they just didn't go for it & ate out every day.
All in all we did enjoy our holiday, Portugal & its people are lovely, also there are many fine restaurants to be found One in particular was "the sizzling stone" its left at the bottom of the strip & then just on your left.
Summing up the unfortunate negatives of this hotel we cant wait to come back to the area but would neither recommend or return to the Montechoro even though it was not expesive, it is not a patch on other 4 star or even 2 star hotels that we have stayed in & taking all the mean extra charges of the hotel into account & the fortune we paid for taxis to get to & from the old town most days (thanks to the unreliable overcrowded hotel bus) we may as well have paid more money for a better quality more central hotel.
One other thing a take away 2 ltr bottle of water is €2.50 in the hotel but €1 in the off licenses & shops down the strip, profit or rip off ?
We hope our review will be of help to people choosing a hotel in alberfuria.

Room Tip: A pool view room would be quieter at night because it does not face the noisy Irish bars across the...

We've just got back from 2 weeks here. The hotel is looking a little tired and dated but when you've got a great deal - does that really matter? Our room was spacious with loads of storage - you need that for all your holiday clothes! The beds were ok but the pillows were like bricks - we should have had them changed but that's our fault I suppose. The bathroom was again just ok, needs a little work like the rest of the hotel but it was adequate. The bath towels are small and a bit tatty so be prepared if you want to take more shoes instead of a couple of bath towels!
There were always sun beds available by the pool but look for the other pool across the road. It isn't signposted so ask. There are 2 pools, diving boards, loads of sun beds and a snack bar and it's very quiet and relaxing.
The location made our holiday great - the hotel was just a base for us but there is more there than you first think as there is very little signage - explore as soon as you can to find what there is!
Breakfast was adequate, always much the same but not bad at all.
