“Great hotel !!”
Reviewed May 12, 2013

We stayed for a week at the Ondamar in May 2013. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We have 3 young children and stayed in a two bedroom apartment. The apartment was very big and and had everything we needed. Apartment was cleaned everyday with fresh towels supplied each day. The pool was great and the children especially enjoyed the heated indoor pool. Would highly recommend this hotel to everyone. We will definitely be returning there on our next trip to Albufeira.

My wife and I had a good stay at this hotel in May 2013.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a friendly guy for checking in.
We were given a map of the town with The Strip about 10 minutes walk to the right as you leave the hotel or The Old Town 15-20 minutes to the left as you leave the hotel.
There is a large supermarket ( called Continente) about 300 metres to the left of the hotel. This is where you can catch the Eva bus service to Faro or Villamora, €4.65 each way.
All the staff at the hotel are friendly ,courteous and helpful. Nothing seemed too much trouble for them. All speak good English.
Breakfast was the usual selection of cereals, fruit, fruit juice, bacon, scrambled eggs, beans and sausages.
The coffee machine seemed to have a mind of its own, selecting for example Cappuccino it had a slight chocolate taste, yet next time it was fine!
The evening meal was different each time, with choice of 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 deserts. These were always well presented and again the staff were very courteous and polite.
We had lovely fish and chips Friday but not as us Brits know it, it was Portuguese style.
Our only criticisms would be the televisions need updating to LCD with clear channels (sky news was crackly) and the wifi is only free in the lobby and bar. Wifi is available in all rooms but chargeable.
Apart from the 2 minor points above, we had a pleasant stay at the hotel and would consider returning at some point in the future.

Albufeira is not for people with serious mobility problems. lots of low hills mean you will find most routes can present some difficulty.
There seems to be a lot of Dutch there and this is indicated by the number of Dutch restaurants and cafes, a nice change of cuisine.

The Aparthotel- Nice looking building with a nice large garden area and shaped swimming pool
The Good - Staff were good (generally great but let down by the free shuttle driver who did not keep to schedule and was fairly surly). Cleaning was great. The room was good- plenty of space- well equipped but with a noisy air-con The pool was quiet (at that time :)), Can not comment on the food as I did not eat there. The location is...nicely away from late night bars and other things that can spoil your sleep but as the whole town sprawls along the coast it is a good 10 to 20 min stroll to most places of interest
The Bad- The lift is my main concern. They are small, unventilated, with room for about 6 people and I was stuck in one with 2 others for over 20 min as it yoyoed between the basement and the floor above it.
The alarm bell worked
Staff eventually managed to stop it (with a crowbar as all the controls it seems were not functional and their lift key did not work) during the time in the lift I was getting electric shocks from the control panel when I pushed the buttons to try and open the doors.
The explanation as to the problem from the lift engineer? "the lift motor was overheating". The hotel was not busy at that time being over a week before the end of May bank hols and not particularly hot weather so I expect the motor to overheat again. (I'm not sure that the explanation is correct :/
I had also previously been in the lift when it took me down to the basement- at that time I'd thought I'd just made a mistake so pushed the right button. Taking to others this had also happened to them.
As I stopped using the lifts after that time I cannot say if the problem has been fixed.
The lift issue adjusted the over all score downward by one

Room Tip: Don't use the lifts

Stayed for a week with my wife on a self-catering holiday. Apartment and hotel very clean and bright but looking a little past its best. The apartment was a generous size with a double/twin bedroom, a pull-out bed settee in the living area and what looked like drop down bunk beds(????) The Kitchen fittings appeared to be brand new and worked well. The bathroom was also clean and bright, although hot water took a little time to come through.

Although the rest of the hotel was clean and well maintained we noticed that non of the ornamental pools and fountains were being used and the bars were very quite. This may have been because it was only late April and as the season progresses there may be more of a holiday atmosphere about the place. As well as a large outdoor pool there is also an indoor pool and gym, although the gym was being refurbished while we were there. All staff very friendly and helpful.

Situated on the main road into the Old Town and close to "The Strip" (don't go to The Strip its ghastly!) and only a few minutes walk away from a number of supermarkets and shops. Plenty of bars and restaurants also within a short walking distance.

If you are expecting a luxury holiday you will be disappointed. For a cheep week away self-catering well worth consideration.

Very happy with this aparthotel, visited 8-16 april, weather was poor the first few days so decided to make use of the indoor pool with our 2 year old which was brilliant- very clean and well maintained and actually very warm(bath warm). we used this pool every day even during the nice weather as the outdoor pool is so cold. the hotel was quiet so no shortage of sunbeds. the huge fish pond was great entertainment for our toddler. ( tap the bridge to see hundreds of koi swim out to you). The hotel bar opened for the first time mid through our stay but was quiet, it is a very trendy bar with helpful staff. didnt sample any hotel food. check in very quick and pleasantly surprised with the huge apartment. extremely clean and maid service everyday.
All staff are extremely helpful and you get service with a smile. The location is quite good 5-10 min walk to the strip or 4 euro taxi to old town.
I also have to mention yellow fish transfers - extremely professional service and driver. picked up at airport on time, short walk to car, assisted with luggage, no speeding, 2 hands on wheel at all times iindicators used correctly - i wish i could drive as courtiousley - and car arrived 10 mins early for return trip.
Only one minor blip was that the beds were not that comfortable but overall a great stay, value for money and would return no bother.
Lastly - i will always choose any portugese resort over any spanish resort from now on. the portugese people are welcoming and friendly in all the bars and restaurants, hotels ect. I am sick of going to spain, canaries and places like that getting food thrown at you with attitude. just eat pay and leave attitude.

Good location 10-15 mims walk to beach, 10 mins to the strip, 15-20 mins to th old town. Very clean hotel, 2 bedrrom apartment was very spacious with 2 bathrooms, furnishings a little bit tired, but kitchen well equipt with basics. Outdoor pool was cold due to the time of year, but very nice, indoor pool and jaquzi good and very warm. Staff friendly and helpfull. Didn't use the resturant so can't comment. Chinese resturant across the road very good.

Room Tip: worth paying for a 2 bedrom appartment if you want more space

Before booking this hotel, having read the reviews I was looking forward to staying at the Ondamar hotel. First problem was the room I had booked was meant to have a pool view, what we actually got was a view of a giant roof obscuring virtually any views. When I raised this with the reception, they said they didn't have any other rooms available and couldn't do anything. The room itself was clean and tidy however the decor is very 80s and need of updating. On the second day I discovered the air/heat conditioning wasn't working, although I reported this to the reception we had to wait two cold evenings in the hotel room before it got fixed. That was only after constant complaining and being told I didn't know how to use the air conditioner and it was my fault. The worst part of the hotel was the breakfast which was absolutely appalling. The bacon was burnt, sausages under cooked, eggs were cold, beans were cold, no milk for tea, the other items looked like they were being rationed. Other guests also noticed this and after a number of complaints, they improved the quantity of food after the second day although the quality was still very poor and amongst the worst I have ever seen. Indoor swimming pool was Ok and well heated however is dangerous as it goes from about 3ft deep to about 7ft without any warning or any signage which is very dangerous for small children. Also while we used the pool, I never saw a single staff member in that vicinity. All in all this was not a great experience and there is no way this hotel should be classed as 4 star as it is absolutely not.
