Vilanova Resort
Ranked #131 of 154 Hotels in Albufeira
Reviewed October 2, 2008

We stayed in the Vilanova Resort apartments mid September and found them good value for the money we paid at that time of the season. We wanted some late summer sun and we certainly were not disappointed. The resort is quite large, well maintained with a superb park-like centre with large swimming pool, kiddies pool and bar/snacks area. Plenty of sunbeds for everyone. The resort itself is an oasis in the centre of the 'strip' - where most of the bars, restaurants are located but we were not disturbed by any late night / early morning revellers. The only noisy night was the Friday - the local bullring is immediately behind the resort and sounded very lively (the bull doesn't get killed that night too).
Apartment was very large, basic but cleaned daily and perfectly adequate for couples or family. This resort seems to cater almost exclusively for the British (in all their glorious forms) so don't expect a cosmopolitan experience...
The resort is technically not in Albufeira (old town) but just ouside in one of its close suburbs. We took advantage of the little train (its a tractor on the road!) to get into the old town - buy a 4 Euro ticket and you can use the train all day and night (until 3 am!) which was good value and the old town is a little more sophisticated than the Strip area.
The beaches are about a 10 minute stroll down hill from the end of the Strip and well worth the walk - but watch the incoming tide, the waves can be monumental and catch you unawares! The beaches are also good from the old town front. Beach loungers with sun shades are quite pricey for a days hire (15 Euros per couple) so we bought a cheap parasol for about 5 euros and this was satisfactory.
I would go back there for a late break out of the main season, just to get some 'cheap' sun within 2 hours of blighty. Sandals Resort its not but good value nevertheless.

Me my wife and children aged 11,13,16, stayed here from the 12th sept 08 to 26th in a two bedroom(sleeps 2-6) garden view self catering villa. We have always wanted to go to Portugal an this year we got there, after reading some reviews on here we were a bit weary, well I can honestly say we were not disapointed one bit. We had a really great time througout the whole holiday. We arrived at the resort at 11.30 am and although we were told we would not (before going) get the keys until 2.00 pm we were given them straight away and no deposit. The cost of a safe is 10 euros a week with 15 Euros deposit which i think was ok.The villa was although not luxury but very clean and tidy with enough space for all of us .There is a well equiped kithchen area for when, an if you decide to eat in. The bathroom again not 5* but clean and tidy.As you go in the front door this is the 1st bedroom with 2 like sofa beds(stone base with sofa like mattresses)then there is a small hall with the bathroom to the left and to ur right the 2nd bedroom bigger than the 1st with 2 single wooden framed beds which u could push 2gether.From the hall in front of u is the main living room with the kitchen area to ur right and large table an chairs, there is two beds like the 2 in 1st bedroom, this room leads onto a porch with table and chairs. Then the garden area(well maintained) leads to the big clean pool. Our kids loved the pool (so did I)!!!The only problem i had with the pool area was the diving boards, there was supposed to be three but the top board was missing and on a safety note it could of been replaced or taped off(although i must admit people and oursleves still used it),Also people have mentioned the absecent of lifeguards, well we kept our eye on the kids.Overall the complex and staff were great. The complex itself is right on the strip to ur right an left there is loads of bars an restraunts to suit all tastes, prices resonable.the beaches are great, the old town well worth a visit on the train, also the marinea which from here u can take a number of boat trips the dolphine watching is well worth the cost. There is also a number of coach day trips an tours which u can do.The people who live and work here are very freindly and helpfull........And on top of this you have the weather, apart from a couple of mornings/afternoons(a bit cloudy) and one day of heavy showers it was pure sunshine all the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FANTASTIC.

We arrived at the VilaNova Resort by coach but spent a few minutes trying to find reception to check in. Nothing is well signposted within the resort. Even the apartment was confusing to get to.
Our apartment was at the back overlooking the garden/pool which was absolutely perfect as there was minimal noise from "The Strip". The pool and surrounding area were well kept and not too crowded, there was no grabbing of sun loungers!. We also had a balcony which actually gave us some privacy and we were able to dine outside which topped it off. The apartment was fully equipped, should one wish to cook in all week.
However, our joy was short lived as my jewllery was taken from my suitcase when it was in the storage room once we checked out at mid-day. Our coach was not picking us up until 2pm. I did not find this out until afterwards.
Great resort for a week with super location.

My boyfriend and i have just returned from a week at Vilanova in Albufeira and had a wonderful time! I read a lot of the reviews on this and many other websites, as neither of us had been to this area before, and needless to say i was very worried about what we would find on our arrival - i am sure that the only people who write reviews are the type who do not know how to enjoy theselves and moan about everything! Which is why i wanted to let people know how wondeful our time there was! We managed to get the whole holiday, flights and transfers very cheap, about £500, so obviously we were not expecting 5* luxury, but just wanted a week of relaxing in the sun. The hotel and facitilites were great, we did not have to pay a deposit when we arrived, like mnay other people had too, and find all the staff to be extremely helpful and friendly, speaking very good english. We also had 1 of the dreaded studio apartments which have no bed, just 2 'sofa beds' or mattresses. Not particularly romantic, so we just made a bed on the floor with the mattresses and huge bolster cushions and re-made the sofas every morning. For 1 week, this was fine, very comfortable, and too be honest, in this area you are out all day and night anyway, so we literally just fell asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillow! Our room had a lovely big balcony ,over looking the huge pool, which had a table and 4 chairs to eat out on. Lots of cooking utensils, great little oven and all very clean. The area its self and The Strip are great fun, lots of bars and lovely restaurants, with the usual tourist shops. Happy hour all day and lots of bars had live music in many nights. Our recommendations: The Budda Bar, fantastic venue, completely different to all the other bars on the strip, great lives bands but a little more expensive, especially after 11pm. Eating out: you must try Cataplana, the local traditional dish of fish, clams, mshrimp and mussels in a tomato, onion and pepper stew. Delicious! If you wish to do an excursion, do a day trip on a boat. We went out on a catamaran for the day, had a lunch of bbq sardines and meat, with salad, fruit and beer on a beautiful secluded beach. Fantastic sea to swim in and you can definately top up your tan this way! All i would say to anyone going is go with an open mind and just enjoy the fact you are not in rainy, cold, miserable England! x

My girlfriend and I got a late package deal & for the price we paid - €700 - it was okay. Though, if truth be told, it wasn't worth any more than €700.

The pool is nice - big, deep and cold - but not exactly exclusive given the number of rooms in the resort. It was mainly couples when we were there, but there were a few rowdy groups of lads as well. If you prefer peace and tranquility while you sunbathe this probably isn't for you.

The studio apartment was fine apart from the sleeping arrangements. Couples should note that you do not get a double bed, rather two mattresses on concrete slabs that cannot be moved. The beds double as your sofas during the day. I'm not sure which were more uncomfortable, the beds or the sun loungers by the pool. Either way, my back is sore now.

If proximity to bars and restaurants is important to you, then the Vilamora is very well placed. It's right on the Montechoro Strip which is a touristy street full of Bars and restaurants. There is a wide choice of food and drink and it's all quite inexpensive compared to the UK & Ireland. If you have no interest in nightlife at all, then I'd suggest that Montechoro is probably not a very good holiday choice full stop. Just to clarify, Montechoro is part of Albufeira - Albufeira old town is more attractive and it can be walked to in about 40 mins or you can get the "train".

Overall - and despite my mainly negative comments - we actually had a good holiday - great weather, good food and plenty of relaxation by the pool. If the price is right, you can live with the flaws.

Got back yesterday from Vila Nova. Had a great time. Stayed in a 1 bedroom villa, very clean and great for a base. Pool was clean and very big. The pool bar was expensive and first day there I got a burger which was rare and had blood in it didnt go again, that was the only problem we had, apart from some of us brits who do not clean up after ourselves, leaving bottles around the pool which is dangerous for the kids.
Never heard any noise at night, which surprised me after reading some peoples comments. (Personally I think these people are professional moaners).
Excellant reception staff, very helpful.
The location is great, near to everything.
Will be going again next year.

we have just returned home from algarve, on arival we did not have to pay ant deposit so reading all the reviews i thought we were on to a good start.we got a safe which is in reception 10 euros per week 15 euro deposit we had a villa number 137 which is at back of resort,it was cleanish everything basic old furniture bit dim. the air conditioning worked but to be fair you dont really need it as the algarve cools down in the late eveinings ! the pool is good there are two one small one for kids then a big pool with diving boards very deep my two lads enjoyed but had to keep eye on my 5 year old there is no supervision also there is no entertainment there as thompsons are no longer there, they also took the climbing frame and slide away so dont be fooled in to the pictures, also the bar by the pool is expensive apart from a pint of larger 230 euro everthing else is a ripp off little bottle of water 1.30 euro go out of resort shop opp 2 min walk same bottle 50 cents!!!!! also the market next door is a big big rip off bottle of robinsons squash 4.15 euros the english shop top of strip near beach only 2.15 so shop carefully the beach is about 15 to 20 min walk depends on age of kids !! steep hill down to it but there is another way back up which is not so steep, beech very small and gets very crowded so was very disapointed with that we stayed in algarve last year at alvor beach is fantastic there so this was dissapointing all in all a relaxing holiday would say catch the train <bus> down to old town lots more down there and try and use the english kitcen turn right out of resort and over the main road and its located on the right set back few hundred yards, good nosh and very friendly
