“Hopefully, We'll be back!”
Reviewed May 3, 2012

Just back from Janelas do Mar last week. Have to agree with the positive reviews posted so far. Just to add that we did not have an electric kettle in the room but boiled our water on the electric cooker. We weren't offered a heater either and the apartments were a bit cool in the evening but we didn't go on holiday to sit in and walked down to the entertainment in the strip but did take a taxi home (€5) because the area was a bit quiet and dark for walking back. We didn't pay the €20 deposit for the remote for the television and just maually changed the chanels.Apartments clean and spacious with maid service most days. There is a rota laid out in the book that tells you what days the maids will clean and what they will do that day. We booked through roomex.com and received an excellent rate and look forward to using their roomex repeat service in the future. We used Yellowfish for transfers from the airport, excellent service, €60 for two people return with free bottle of wine.

We recently stayed for a week at Janelas Do Mar apartments for a family holiday and we were suprised with some of the negative feedback that the apartments get. They ain't no 5 start establishment but they are clean and fairly modern and are good to use as a base to explore the Algarve. The staff whilst not exactly leaders of their field in customer service and quite miserable at times a couple of the staff do go out of their way to be helpful and friendly. The guy who works (hard!) behind the bar is a credit to this apartment complex and is really friendly and cheery, something that you would expect on holiday!.
The apartments are quite big in size and have a seperate kitchen and dining area should you wish to prepare/cook your own meals. The bathroon and bedroom (we had 1 bed apartment) are also quite spacious. Block 1 has a supermarket, block 2 has the evening bar and reception area (24 hour) and block 3 a gym and indoor pool. Their is ample parking outside if like us you have a hire car and this is on street and free of charge. The cleaners seem to take pot luck as to what they actually do or when they clean, 3 days out of 7 we had the do not disturb sign on the door and on the other 4 days we didn't have the sign up, the room was 'cleaned' once - this consisted of changing the towels as not even the bed linen was changed.
The surrounding area is not one I would walk of a night although we experienced no problems around the apartments and we gladly paid the 5 euro in a taxi to the strip each night but we were told by people who worked the strip in bars we got to know that it is a pretty rough and crime ridden at times. The hills around this area are steep and take some doing, this is the biggest downside to the location and area although with a car of a day and taxis at night this didn't affect us. I would use these apartments again as we had no problems or issues and for the price we paid on hotels 4 u it was a bargain.
This was my first visit to The Algarve and what did suprise me was how cheap the accomadation and car hire were, although a downside with the car hire was that the pre-paid tank of fuel was 20 euros more expensive than 8 days car hire!!. The fuel is 1 euro 80 cents a litre and the most expensive in Europe I'm lead to believe.

Room Tip: Pretty standard rooms judging by the two we had. Block 2 has the bar and reception so is quite handy...

we have stayed in these apartments before but last time we stayed in january when no shop or bars where oened, this time we stayed i april it was great with everything opened, the apartments are very big we stayed in a one bed apt it had microwave, toaster, ele kettle, 4 ring hob. the beds where comfyt here was a heater which was handy as the weather was not that good. indoor swimming pool and jeccuzi free of charge there is a saunta and gym but you have to pay for them, out door pools where clean with lot's of sunbed's but you have to pay 1euro a day for cover for bed's well worth it.downsides you have to pay 20 euro dep for remote for tv you get that back at the end of hol but it has to be paid in cash, there is a hill to go down to shops and bars not bad if you don't have trouble walking takes about 10 mins to big supermarket and 15 mins to the strip the old town is about 30 mins but the bus stops right outside the hotel every 30 mins to the old town 2euro 14 cents each way.ther is an irish bar across the road from hotel it depends on who servers you as to how much you pay and the size of the messures one night 2 good size whiskeys and a can of coke was 7euro 50 cents the next night half the amount of whisky and a can of coke was 8euros 50 cents we did not go back again.

Room Tip: get a high floor viewa are great.

First of all the good points...so incredibly unbelievably cheap. How do they make a profit? Only 70 pounds for the week for 3 of us! Amazing value. We also had a room with the most beautiful view of the sea and albufeira for no extra price. The room was clean and well-equipped. The staff were friendly and helpful. The pool and jacuzzi inside were very warm. Even the one outside pool was not as cold as Portuguese pools can be. The downside was the resort is slightly out of town but taxis are relatively cheap. Also the additional facilities such as the table tennis, tennis and pool table are quite expensive. All in all though this place was amazing value.

Arrived with little expectation but were very pleasantly surprised. Room booked was a studio but we had a one room apartment which was very clean and comfortable, facilities adequate and basic if a little out of date but have no quibbles. The apartment was cleaned daily with towels every second day and bed linen changed during the week, only issue was two single beds instead of a double but otherwise a very happy holiday!! One tip, the apartments are on top of a hill and it's a bit of a trek to the beach and town, also the map provided at check in is very misleading in respect of distances and accuracy!! For the money we paid we found it excellent value for money and would definitely return.

The old town is a bit of a jaunt away, but the strip is easily reached within 10 minutes if you walk out of the hotel and to the right dowen the hill under the motorway under pass then up a small incline ,you are then at the top of the strip..We stumbled upon this route and it took us no time to get there from then on.
The hotel itself is at the top of a bit of an incline but it's not that big of a deal. Its far enough away from the traffic noise and the drunks to allow you to have a decent kip at night. The rooms are massive and we had 2 balconies ,one with a seaview, the other overlooked one of the pools. It has got an indoor pool and jacuzzi which were both nice on the cooler days to use.
we were in the main block where reception is .The staff all seemed nice and welcoming and we werent charged any additional fees. The lift is a bit rickety and compact so if you are a couple who are quite portly and rotund you might feel a bit cramped inside it.The corridors are a bit dark, but apart from that the hotel is fine and I would definitely go there again. We booked through onthebeach.co.uk at rock bottom prices so we were very happy with what we got.We expected a studio apartment but what we actually got was a very spacious apartment with kitchenette, and 2 balconies..The only problem we had with the whole stay was there seemed to be a basketball competition taking place on our last day and there were loads of teeneager making a right racket about the place slamming doors and shouting. That was the only downside.

Room Tip: higher floor ,less likely to have noise.
