Cerro Malpique Aparthotel
Ranked #48 of 154 Hotels in Albufeira
Reviewed May 31, 2009

We booked this accommodation at the last minute and got a brilliant deal from Booking.com, I read the reviews and thought there might be a slight exageration over the access to the place but no, it is for real!
We live in Spain and rode to the Algarve by motorbike and found the Cerro Malpique Apartments with no problems at all, we have been to Albufeira many times in the past but thought self catering was something different for us.
The Apartment grounds are very nice and the reception helpful and open 24 hours a day, the accommodation itself (Room 403 1 bedroom apartment overlooking the pool) was massive with all the space you could need, a well stocked kitchen and loads of storage space, I could see the place being ample for 4 people however on the down side you wouldn't want to be the ones sleeping on the sofa bed, it was uncomfortable enough as a sofa! The beds were wobbly and creaky too but I have slept in worse... you just need to find a comfortable position and stay in it!
The place was quiet so we didn't suffer from any excessive noise either day or night and the partition walls seemed to be solid enough not to hear people above or below at inconvenient times.
The true downside to the place is the access to the old town from the apartment, you can either use a long flight of steep steps and a longish downhill walk or a longer run of shallow ones (yes, really 100 in total) which bring you out into the main plaza. I found going down to the town best using the steep steps and coming up the shallower ones, whatever you use you need to be fit (or young!!)
Whatever you do don't use the internet at the reception, it is a complete rip off - 5 euros for half an hour when you can get the same amount of time in the town for 50 cents.

The rooms were very spacious and comfortable and were also kept very clean, the only downside was we hadnt enough towels for five adults especially as we got them on Thursday when we arrived and they were not changed until Monday.
The pool area was nice and was kept clean also but dont be expecting a poolside bar or anything. Any drinks you want you will have to climb up and down very steep steps to one of the local shops to get them. I would recommend this place if you are able bodied and quite fit as it isnt in the middle of things but there is a shortcut down over 100 steps to the main square in the old town.

we arrived on sun 14th sep first thought when i stepped outside was we could have picked a better place to stay. but gave it benefit of the doubt how wrong was I! we had several steps to climb with heavey cases then i wanted to flop on the bed but realised it was folded up we were sleeping on sofa bed all week the rooms were not cleaned as much as they should have been the furniture was old and out dated i did not think the rooms were clean when we arrived. i loved the view from balcony and size of the kitchen but did not use it. there was no good drinks to choose from i wouldnt call it a bar, the facilities were rubbish we played pool and even the pool table was broken and the pool outside was too small there was not enough sunbeds for every 1 the hotel was overrated and overpriced this is no way a 4 star.

the staff were ok but not brilliant the location is ok but the steps 2 old town are a killer good thing was i did nt let it ruin my time in the algarve .

We loved our time in Portugal.

We arrived at Cerro Malpique to a warm welcome form the man at reception who told us where all the local amenities were.

The apartment were great and clean. I have given these apartment 4/5 this is because I felt that the bathrooms could do with updating.

There is no air-conditioning but we were able to hire a fan for 20euro for 2 weeks (this was a must have in August).

The pool was the best part about it, we couldn't belive how peaceful it was it rarely got very busy at any point in the day. We never had to get up early to get a lounger any day.

We were close 'Lidl' a five min walk where we could get really cheap food and drink to stock up on.

We only ate in our apartment at night once as not like my kitchen at home but we did have breakfast and lunch there most days.

There were 2 sets of steps to go down to the square one much more difficult than the other. The easier steps ( if you can call them easy) were situated at he back of the hotel with a sign saying 'Old Town' these were much better with a briliant little family run paper and beer shop called 'Jimmy's' at the bottom. The steps are alot easier when it is night time withour the midday heat. We would consider ourselves a fairly fit couple and did find the steps hard especially in the afternoon. This however would not stop me from staying there again. In fact better as you are far enough away to have a really peaceful holiday and also be able to get to the square quickly. Don't go if you have mobility problems but anyone else I would recommend it. No the Ritz but a goo d3 star property. ( just go on that stepping machine for a bit of practise before going lol)

Thank you to the Cerro Malpique for a truly wonderful holiday.

PS - good restaurants

Taco's
Tequila
The Three Crowns - have a look for this one wonderful steaks over the square ( you would need to look as you wouldn't stumble upon it)
one by square for Vietnamese, thai think called Fusion

This was a last minute booking with Style Holidays for a studio apartment being allocated on arrival. Arrival at Faro was chaotic and disorganised, reps lacked organisation and communication skills. We were in apartment 103 at Cerro Malpique, which was very nice, spacious and well-equipped apartments. Can't fault the cleanliness, room was cleaned Mon-Fri and kept apartments and pool very clean. However location was not ideal as view was over a building site with workers starting at 07:00 and not finishing until about 18:00! Also there was a problem with the local residents dogs, who barked through out the night...1am, 2am, 3am...not good if your a light sleeper! Staff at reception sometimes seemed disinterested and were sometimes rude and ignorant. Also the shop only sold very basic items i.e. water, crisps...it would have been useful if they sold ice-creams and a larger range of cold drinks. Also a bar on site would have been nice to save going down to the square (and back up) approx 100 steps every night. There is a Lidl nearby but involves a trek up some hills. The rep wasn't very good at giving information, only interested in selling expensive excursions...only found out at end of holiday about land train to new town. Went to Zoomarine which was very good, particularly the dolphin show. Also went to Aquashow which was a great day, fantastic wave pool...the coach pick up point isn't far from Lidl. This is typical allocated on arrival apartments, I can't imagine anyone specifically requesting to stay here.

Stayed at Cerro Malpique 2 june 2008 2 bed room apartment very large and very clean we stayed in room 2 205 there are 18 apartments all overlooking the pool and the sea the higher rooms have the best sea views. Cerro malpique 1 is where the reception this is situated and is about 250 meters away up some nasty hills. Tip, get dropped off at malpique 2 the receptionist will spot you on camera and come down with your keys this will save you dragging your cases some 500 yards up and down hills I can not comment on Malpique 1 but Malpique 2 is excellent. You can be in the old town within a 5 min walk down (Steep steps)

We have just returned from the Cerro Malpique Aparthotel after being sent here because Thomas Cook overbooked us. We should have been staying at the Club Praia da Oura. We were disgusted to be told less than 48 hours before we were due to fly that we would be staying somewhere else but on arriving at the Cerro Malpique we were pleasantly surprised. We had a beautiful one bedroom apartment overlooking the pool with magnificent sea views. It was the biggest and most well equipped apartment we have ever stayed in (fridge, dishwasher, toaster, kettle, coffee maker, Sat TV etc.) The gentleman on reception was very helpful and we had maid service every day (Mon to Fri only) Nice pool area plenty of sunbeds and everywhere spotlessly clean. The only downside was the location. We were not near any bars, shops or restaurants so went into the town every night which is down a steep hill and then 99 steps - OK going down but tiring coming back. It takes about 10 minutes and you are in Albuferia main square which is full of bars, noise, restaurants and people - fantastic place. Most of the area is hilly but the exercise was good to work off all the fantastic sea food we ate. The beaches are just brilliant and there are loads of places to visit. We hired a car and went along the coast visiting different places. Loads of water parks for the kids and Zoomarine close by.
We had a wonderful holiday and could not fault the accommodation even though it was not what we had chosen. The Algarve is the best place I have visited so far and can't wait to return and I would stay at the Cerro Malpique again.
