“Ants in the dining room”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

We have just come back from this hotel which is in an excellent location as other guests have already reported. The hotel could be absolutely stunning and command top money if it was updated. The bedroom, bathroom and balcony are all of a good size. Unfortunately, the beds are very hard and they only seem to have twin beds - no doubles! The bathroom leaves a lot to be desired in cleanliness needs an urgent update with grouting etc. being very dirty and discoloured. We only had breakfast one morning as there were ants covering the underside of the plate which I picked up and which then crawled on to the top of the plate. I did show the waiter who just picked up the plates and took them back in to the kitchen. Didn't seem to be that bothered to be honest. We never ate in dining room after this and bought breakfast in nearby café/bars. We will not return to this hotel unless it is upgraded.

Stayed at the Sol e mar early March, after reading some of the reviews i started to wonder what to expect,
OK it is a bit dated, that said the hotel is clean and in the best position for the beach and old town.
The staff are helpful and polite, this was one of my best value for money finds, will be back soon.
Kevin,

The room was cleaned every day with new towels.Nice layout and the view over the balcony was outstanding.Decor was nice and clean. The main part of the hotel was very nice and a relaxing. We went half board and had all our meals there but if we went again would go b&b.Food ok but a bit bland and not much to choose from. The hotel could not be better for location right on the beach and next to the main square.Overall we would go back again.

This is about expectations. We expected a 4 star hotel and got a 2 star at the most. Other reviewers have said it is clean. All I can say is that our expectations of what is clean must be different. And, to be fair, clean is the very least we expect; but we didn't get it. The sheets were clean and the bath, sink and toilet were clean. The floor was still sticky around the bin, the bedside tables were dusty and still marked and the air vent in the bathroom was thick with dust. The wardrobes were painted white - several decades ago - and are now scratched and dirty. The walls are artexed white and very dirty too.

The service is atrocious. When we checked in the receptionist, Angela, didn't even smile. Each time we saw her it was clearly too much trouble to even look at us, never mind do her job and actually help us. I asked for the pool balls on the last morning and was told 'after 4pm'. When I asked why I was told they were locked behind the bar. I don't believe someone else didn't have the keys - she just couldn't be bothered. The other receptionists weren't much better and we were clearly an inconvenience. Though Berta helped on a couple of occasions we felt like we were being a nuisance and one time when we tried to book a trip she looked at my partner and said, 'Now, but I have all this to do', and spread her hands to indicate the desk! Then 5 minutes later she was busy chatting to another guest.

Breakfast is dire. One day we were offered greasy bacon and hard eggs, another, some kind of tinned sausages. Everything was luke warm . I saw another reviewer say that you could make do with toast, and cereal and there is cold meats and yoghurt etc. My question is, why should we? We are paying for bed and breakfast in what we are told is a 4 star hotel. If they are going to offer a cooked breakfast then make it hot. Surely it isn't beyond a chef's ability to cook a soft egg and bacon not swimming in grease? In addition, we are in a country where oranges grow on trees at the roadside and this hotel gives you some dayglo orange coloured concoction that doesn't seem to have a passing aquaintance with any type of fruit. Why should we make do? This hotel is like Fawlty Towers and we would definitely never go back. If you go expecting a poor to mediocre experience then you won't be disappointed. If you go expecting 4 star you will be.

The good news is that the view is amazing and the rooms are of a good size. That is all this place has to recommend it. Don't go.

HALF TERM WINTER BREAK
16/02/13-23/02/13

Having recently returned from a week’s stay at this hotel had a good time but can honestly say it is not a 4*, it might have been back in 1965.
At the price I paid I can’t really complain although I’d rather pay the going rate and have a decent bathroom, as it was disgusting.
Our room was on the fourth floor directly under the dining room, so you didn’t need an alarm clock as the furniture noise woke you up.
Overall the staff were very pleasant and the majority of other guests, all of mixed nationalities were very friendly.
As we were only bed and breakfast we found a number of places to eat. Our favourites were Doce Jardim, located in the square next to the Rock Cafe Bar, and a couple on the front, Flavours and Cabana Fresca ~ Don’t be put off by the touts!

didnt think this should be rated as 4 star just about makes a 3. rooms very tired and basic need refurbishing . food not great but acceptable just, not a lot of choice, no fresh fruit at breakfast, only one receptionist had a smile the others not very happy although theyy seemed to be sufferring from flu, great position in centre of old town over looking beach.probally would go back but only as b&b as lots of great resturants about. march 2013.

Room Tip: all rooms over look beach. if your near floor 5 you will here the entertainment as vents in bathroom...

This is the fourth time we have returned to the hotel, and I have already reviewed it, so I will not go back on my opinion, I just need to ask two questions, why don't they fit 28 / 32 inch flat screen TVs in the rooms and include English channels, gone are the days in 4 star hotels that you have to lay in bed and try and watch a portable tv with a 15 inch screen, and the only English programme is BBC. World news, also why does the fridge in your room stop working when you take the key tag out of the electric socket when you leave the room for the day ?, isn't that defeating the object, come on owners of Sol E Mar bring things up to date for your customers
