“Great place for a family!”
Reviewed August 3, 2012

We had a great week in Da Balaia. The personnel was great and helpful. We had initially two rooms (2 adults & 2 babies), but at our arrival they agreed that this was nonsense and therefore we get a reduction for our next stay as we perfectly well fitted into one room. La Tour was very noisy due to the evening activities and we were transferred to La Pyramide which was just perfect. Great view and quiet.

The food was great and our 2-year old spent 1 afternoon at the baby club which was great. Friendly and helpful people.

Beautiful beach and s lovely pool, however a bit cold for children.

We had a great time and will definitely try other clubmeds as well.

Travelled in May with Grandmother and 3 yr old. Food fantastic, rooms great. Pool so cold I could not get into and my daughter wouldn't either. How do you go on vacation and not be able to get into the pool? Spoke to the Chef de village and he said it couldn't be heated anymore. Most guests were talking about it and having to go to drastic measures to get their kids in there. Of course Club Med were waiting for July and August to heat it naturally so oh well to all of us off season guests. Kids club ok but no pool and ridiculous school drop off hours only twice a day. We are on vacation, I paid for the day.....I shouldn't have to get up early to try and meet drop off times. I should be able to come and go. I have been to Ixtapa club med 3 times and you can drop off anytime. So much better and well run. Portugal is ridiculous. No thought for guests with jet lag or who want to sleep in. Resort great but a trek to beach and difficult to navigate with strollers etc. Bar under staffed at night and long waits for drinks. Overall disappointing

Just returned from our second visit to Da Balaia and we've enjoyed another great week away. As usual the choice of food was superb. We had an interconnecting room in the Golf hotel which was comfortable and quiet. Our son spent 3 days in the petit club and the staff were excellent but he was the only English child there which is just luck of the draw I guess. If you're thinking of having tennis lessons it does help to have an understanding of French, luckily there was someone who was able to translate. The pool is on the cold side even in July but plenty of people didn't seem to have a problem with it.

We also thank you for your constructive comment about the temperature of the water in our heated pool. Please, rest assured that this issue has been taken very seriously and that we have informed the staff from the Managing Team for their kind perusal.

We hope to see you again very soon in one of our Resorts.

I look forward to my annual Club Med vacation with my tennis friends. The weather in Balaia, Portugal is perfect for sports: not too hot and a little breeze, but not enough to tamper with the tennis ball. The facility is gorgeous and grounds magnificent. But where was the tennis instructor? With 6 courts and lots of guests waiting to play, a competent tennis instructor would have been nice. The 3 young GOs assigned to tennis were pleasent and 2 played tennis well. But a good player is not necessarily a good teacher. Admittedly, I have been spoiled having participated in Club Med's ATP program and lessons with truly gifted instructors (e.g. Roger at Columbus Isle, among others). I have never been so disappointed by Club Med.

If you have young children, go there! A lot of guests are with young children, so you feel relaxed and do not worry too much if they disturb anyone.
Huge buffets, breakfast, lunch and dinner - food quality is very good. Table wine is on the very cheap side though...
The GO are friendly, hard working and are contributing to create the familiar Club Med atmosphere.
We had 2 communicating rooms, spatious apart from bathroom in a non renovated towers but overall bedrooms were very clean

Room Tip: Ask for the renovated bedrooms

I have just returned from 2 weeks at the above hotel. We have three children under four so it was a big ask to find a hotel that would meet up to our expectations. Da Balaia was absolutely superb. The food was amazing, everyday was different and plenty of variety. They had a section for small children so that they could watch cartoons while they ate and parents could sit nearby. They also had a section for babies and provided fresh fish, meat, veg etc that you could puree if needs be.They even provided blenders so it was perfect for us given that our youngest child is ten months. The waitresses were very helpful particularly Fabiana and nothing was a problem.
Kids club was super. The girls are really professional and you could see that each one of them loves kids. Our children age 4 and 2.5 loved going everyday which says alot as the 2.5 year old can be quite clingy. The girls don't take any notice of crying so you just drop them off and it means that the parents do get a break. Book it when you are booking your holiday as there were alot of parents who were disappointed that they couldn't get a place for their child. One point is that they are quite regimented with what they give kids for their lunch. It has to be meat and two veg so if your kids do not like or want this, they are not offered an alternative even though it is available in the kids section. I asked for my son te offered pasta and sauce and they obliged but I had to make a point of it. Club Med take note. Charlotte (English and French), Inga, MarieAngela are fabulous.
I noted from previous reviews that the pool is cold. It is. Obviously, towards end of June, this wasnt a problem but I'm not sure what they can do about it.
Accomadation was great. Really clean and chld friendly but I would warn against staying in La Tour hotel as it overlooks the bar so if you have small kids and /or want an early night. it's noisey until at least 10pm. We knew this going out as Sunway Travel had given us an excellent overview of the hotel.
There are plenty of activities and even though everything is conducted through French, the GO's speak English so you are not left out and you can join in or remove yourself totally if you choose. Lionel is a great MC and all of the GO's are really friendly and helpful. They have plenty of space for those who want a quiet holiday and have an adults only restaurant.
They do not have a kids club for over 4's so we cannot return next year but we will be booking another Club Med and I would really recommend Da Balaia. I struggle to find fault. At last, a company who thinks of their guests first all of the time.

Room Tip: Avoid La Tour if you want a quiet room although accomodation is excellent.

Dear Great Member,

We thank you warmly for the time you took to write this review after your stay in our Da Balaia Club Med Resort. We are glad to read that you and your family had great holidays and that you enjoyed the food quality, our childcare facilities and the way your children have been welcomed and looked after in the Petit Club Med. We are also delighted to see that as an English speaker, you did not have trouble taking part to all the offered activities thanks to the GO’s.

We hope to see you again soon in one of our Resorts – why not at Gregolimano in Greece or at Palmiye in Turkey: they have great facilities for children and have a Mini Club Med for children from 4 !

Kind Regards,

Your Club Med UK Team.
