“Great location but would not go back”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2010

Hotel dated, rooms OK though except in Block B where I slept above a pump which fired up at 6.45am each morning and continued until 11pm - ish. Went bed and breakfast which was fine. Would not go half board or full board. Location perfect, but you need to be fairly keen on walking - an older couple leaving with us said they hadn't been out of the hotel or on the beach because they couldn't walk too far so not suitable for people with fitness issues. Reception staff were great - at least until check-out when the older receptionist tried to charge me for making a phone call to the UK which I was adamant I didn't do. After a stand off, she eventually commented if I needed the money that much!! I was not happy and it made for a sour end to a great holiday. Loved the old town and the walk along the beach to it - Bar Street is brilliant though drinks pricey - head for the Vegas Showbar where two shorts and mixer is 10 euros as opposed to the bars near the Square which charge 11.50 euros which I felt was quite steep. Restaurants all brilliant especially Ricardo's, the Italian restaurant near the beach front in the old town, but it was the most expensive meal out. Also recommend Erin's Isle at the top of the Strip where a Scottish guy (in an Irish pub!) sang and played guitar - very dry sense of humour but made for a great night. Also enjoyed Jinky's where Lizzie behind the bar is a wee treasure and Scott in the guitar is lovely to listen to.

There is nothing to rave about for this hotel but there is nothing to complain about either. Food was average and boring, but no-one was gonna go hungry especially if you like chips.
The views are great, location is great, short walk to beach and strip, hotel does a free bus to the old town although this is just as neon as the strip!
Plenty of sunbeds, i had no problems getting to sleep each night, room decor was seriously dated but was clean.
I was happy with the hotel for what i paid for it. If i wanted a luxurious hotel i'd have paid more.
Beware if you're easily offended by loud drunken stag parties as the hotel was full of them over the fri/sat/sun but by monday it was full of german silver haired guys. And yes there are a lot of steps, i suppose that's the price you pay for good views.

We stayed at the Auramar for 5 nights at end of April / beginning June 2010. The hotel has issues but these didn't stop us having a very nice holiday.

The good points:

Excellent location looking out to sea, far enough out of Albufeira town to be peaceful but still easy to get around. Walking to town 10 minutes along beach (tide permitting), 20-25 minutes by paths/roads. Taxi to/from town less than 5euro. Walking to strip 10 minutes. There is direct access to the beach via the back gate and a steep set of wooden steps or by longer path from the from of the hotel.

Our room (C301) was very spacious and clean with separate lounge and bedroom (air-conditioned). Being at the end of the corridor it had a side balcony as well as the front one that the other rooms had. We had a sea view from both balconies. The rooms are cleaned every day and even when we put the "do not disturb" sign on the door we were left a bag with a toilet roll and clean towels. Slightly bizarrely they kept the toilet roll supply topped up to five.

The large pool was excellent and the water warm when we were there, waves don't bounce back off the sides either. Be aware though that it only has a small shallow end; mostly it is 2.7m deep and goes down to 3.2m in one area. Sunbeds were available on a grassy area to the side of the pool and despite a few early morning towel runs you could find a free one at most times of the day.

The restaurant had lovely panoramic views over the pool, a headland, and out to sea. Join the so called "Elderly Germans" for an early breakfast, we did and enjoyed it.

The issues:

The hotel was a bit shabby in places but there were bits of painting going on while we were there so they seem to be making some effort at tidying it up. Our bathroom was tatty and certainly not up to modern standards but the plumbing worked and there was plenty of hot water.

Check-in time is 14:00, so our room wasn't ready when we arrived off a morning flight, but they did look after our luggage while we went off and had lunch nearby.

There were occasional graunching noises during the night which we eventually attributed to the small elderly lift in the block. It wasn't obtrusive to us but if you get a room nearer it, it might be.

We were on B&B so can only comment on the breakfast buffet which was basic. Nice bread and rolls but only two cold meats and two cheeses in the continental breakfast. Cooked breakfast was similarly limited but why should they bother when plenty of people were happy with chips?

The hotel is laid out in blocks at different levels on a hillside, this is how they get the great views, but it does mean there are lots of steps. To be fair the hotel description tells you this.

A lot of the other guests were on all-inclusive, so tended to hang around the hotel a lot. We would recommend getting out and about and sample the good range of fish restaurants available in the old town.

The "childrens pool" located near the back gate leading to the beach, it is so small that they have a sign on it to tell people that it is not for cleaning their feet in.

Overall

Not a great hotel but we had a much better opinion of it than some of the earlier reviewers. If you are booked to go there don't panic it is OK. If you have walking difficulties, want to party 24 hours a day, or just want someone else to entertain your kids, you will find other more suitable hotels. However if you like doing your own thing then the Auramar is a good base.

to be honest i dont normally read the reviews on these pages, but i wish i had now.
My holiday from hell lasted a day and a half as i couldnt take any more and booked flights back home for the family. It started off bad and got progressively worse when we arrived at this hotel. We were in C block , which basically means you need to take two lifts and negotiate several flights of stairs and from one block to another. if that wasnt bad enough you have the same scenario if you want to go to the restaurant or any of the pools. The hotel basically caters for Germans in retirement (how they negotiate those stairs is beyond me). I would of thought that this would mean a reasonable standard of accomodation and food. I could go on forever. I cannot see even stag/hen parties putting up[ with this place. Stay well away !

We stayed at the Auramar, the last week in May,possibly a bit too early in the year weather wise, but the sun still shone eventually. The location of this hotel is excellent, just far enough away from the " strip" ,but near enough to walk to if you wished.Onto the hotel its self. The rooms are basic but kept clean. The food is typical all inclusive fayre, okay for one week , but would get repetetive if staying for a fortnight. The pool was absolutly freezing (just the same as the sea),there is an indoor pool however that is heated.Be aware the hotel is used by hen parties and stag parties and has the potential to become rowdy. There is no entertainment for young children and teens.

I really do try not to take too much notice of bad reviews, but I wish I had this time!
We've just got back from a short break at Auramar, which was a good job as we wouldn't have coped with a full week.
The hotel looked great when we got off the coach and it's location is just fantastic, (you can walk along the beach to the old town easily in about 25 minutes) but sadly that is all it has going for it.
I didn't notice a smell in reception as others had commented on and everywhere was clean. We had twin beds when I'd asked for a double, and although we were all inclusive the mini bar was empty and there were no tea/coffee making facilities. It was all very dated and in desparate need of a makeover.
Our room was filled with flying ants on our second night which was awful. We spent ages killing them,(so had the maid by the look of things - there was a pile of dead ones by the fridge which she had just left, and there were ant wings all over my pillowcase!).
The food was just dreadful - breakfast: chips hotdog sausages OR bacon - never both on the same day, cereals, scrambled egg, fried apple, tinned peach halves, cheese and ham slices and plain yogurt. Lunch & Dinner: salad, chips, burgers, one choice of cooked meat, sprouts, carrots and cake, jelly and ice-cream. You couldn't finish off your meal with a coffee as that was only served in the restaurant at breakfast time! You weren't allowed to take fruit out of the restaurant either - they watched you on the door! The best food we had was in a restaurant in the old town. I would definitely recommend self catering if you're staying here, and getting drinks was also a pain as there weren't enough bar staff.
The entertainment was rubbish although I did feel sorry for the organist and dancers. On our second night there was a notice saying "CATS" was playing so we went along. The problem was it was all in German of which we speak very little.
As the hotel was full of mainly elderly Germans, that is what they cater for I suppose.
At 46, we were some of the youngest people there. It was like the film set from Cocoon! I'm not ageist at all, but it was just like a retirement home. I wouldn't recommend it if you are under 65 and don't speak fluent German. We saw 2 small children and three teenagers during our time there and there was zero for them to do.
All in all we were very dissappointed with our stay, and would only recommend it if all you want is a very basic room to use as a base.
