“Grim with a capital 'G' 'R' 'I' and 'M'”
Reviewed July 11, 2008

Do not stay at this place. Honestly, it's that bad, if I had the choice of an evening with Gordon Brown or a week here, I would be opting for Gordon every time.

The place should feature in Roget's Thesaurus under 'Grim' - it is delapodated, aged, mouldy, smelly, horrible and frankly should be demolished.

We have been coming to Albufeira for several years and visit 5-6 times a year. We normally stay at the Montechoro at the top of the strip, but saw there was a cheap deal on for this place. It is cheap in every sense of the word. Most of the people there are the tattoo-brigade or elderly folk who have 'love' & 'hat' tattooed on each hand, because one finger was cut off in an accident. They all seemed to be on an all-inclusive holiday.

Anyhow, we stayed here for the New Year's Eve celebrations which are absolutely phenomenal in Albufeira. There are tens of thousands of people and the whole place erupts into a party atmosphere. Unfortunately, the eruptions were not sufficent to bring the Auramar to the ground and we still had to stay there when we got back in the early hours of Jan 1st.

  • Liked — Nothing. It is a hell-hole.
  • Disliked — The rooms are disgusting. My dog's kennell is better kept. And I don't even own a dog.

We have just got back from the Auramar hotel and must put the reviews right. The hotel is 3 star and dated but dont be put off by this as the location is far superior to any hotel on the coast of portugal.Auramar has a panoramic view of the coast, the dinning room has been named for its view.Yes it has lots of steps and ramps in the hotel which is a shame because this makes hard work of getting about the hotel. The staff are very hard working, some of them cleaning in the morning, serving and waiting on us in the afternoon and always with a smile. The rooms are keeped very clean as the cleaners are there every day changing the towels, washing the floors, tiding the place in general. Our room had air conditioning which actually worked very well, just like the shower very powerfull.A fridge in the room as well which helped keep our drinking water ice cold.Food at the Auramar was plentifull and far too much choice. With 3 Swimming pools and 2 dolphin pools at this hotel they were never crowded. The only downside was the entertainment, most of this was in german or portuguese even the childen's clown was german.

We stayed in the auramar in june 2008 for a week All inclusive,
we had our teenage son with us who was bored senseless (in the hotel) there was nothing for him to do other than play on the internet which cost 9 euro per hour this was far too expensive for this. The food was alright for us but my son was not impressed
We were not giving the correct accomodation we requested a seperate room for our teenage son but got a huge room with a lovely view ,the hotel was dated with german entertainment well if your german you will fit in well with a seperate holiday club within the hotel which was only for the germans and there very own password to get in!!!
Also like to mention the size of the glasses we were given to drink out off it remined me of a childs cup it was that small and with long queues at the bar we felt the hotel knew what they were doing (give as little as possible for as long as possible)
Reception staff were helpful but the area remined us of a church grave yard it was that noisy!! well come to think of it the whole hotel had no atmosphere what so ever. If you are after a week of total total total relaxing and speak German this is the hotel for you!! take my word for it dont go to this hotel but do visit portugal as it is a beautiful place and very clean!"!!! but very expensive!!

  • Liked — the size of room and view
  • Disliked — air con useless ,no atmosphere,

We stayed at the Auramar between 21 June and 5 July 2008. It is difficult to know where to start. Some staff at the reception and bar were short only of ignorant. The smell entering reception was like being close to an effluent plant. Our room was in block B directly above the refuse and recycle bins and close by the rear of the kitchens consequently from 7 30 am the noise was deafening and continued all day. The room was just adequate in size but was dirty. We were joine daily by hundreds of ants that were everywhere. The TV did not work properly (Remote broken and volume control also broken)nor did the aircon. Plug sockets were broken and showing bare wires. The water pressure was nonexistent consequently the bidet could not be used nor could we follow each other to the toilet as it would not flush twice in a row. We had to ask staff to have maids change the bedding although towels were changed regularly. The balcony contained the aircon unit and a broken patio set that was filthy. Never mind a view of the service road ensured we never sat out there. On our first day a guest cut themselves on the stairs leading to our room. Despite being reported it took 8 days to clean. We discovered that the hotel catered mainly for All Inclusive clients consequently the entertainment bar was not available to paying guests. A similar story at the poolside bar but where you could order food and drink but we had no idea what the charge would be and staff took full advantage for the first 2-3 days then we stopped using those facilities. Staff at the only bar available to us either ignored us or charged whatever came to mind. The so called restaurant was dreadful. We ate 4 breakfasts in 2 weeks principally because we had to clear our own table to be able to eat. In any case the food was mass prepared and very poor in quality in fact some items that had been exhausted were not replenished quickly enough to allow a full breakfast. On leaving the member of staff who checked us out was rude and ignorant and had no idea whatsoever about public relations nor was she the slightest bit interested in providing even the most basic of service. We witnessed a German, with the assistance of a member of staff; take an umbrella from a deaf family who were unable to communicate their protest. On that note the sun beds must have been purchased some years ago and were in need of being replaced. Please think carefully before booking this 'hotel' especially if you have children with you!

  • Liked — The location was excellent
  • Disliked — Rude and unhelpful staff. The condition and cleanliness. Priorty given to All Inclusive guests

We arrived at the Auramar and our luggage was taken to the room by the porter. The room was average size in A block. The view we had was a partial view due to two big conifers outside the balcony which you could almost touch! The bathroom sink was blocked and there was a drip under the sink.
There is sixty nine steps from reception to the pool area which you had to go down for lunch. If you don't like cats don't go there! the cats was outside round the pool everyday under peoples tables if they were eating.
The food we didn't like. Only bacon served every other day.
This hotel should be a two star. We went for a ten night stay and so glad to be home. There were a party of fifty lads on a stag party and also a hen party on a four day stay. Never again!

Just got back home from a weeks stay in the auramar, thought i would write the review now as its still fresh in my head!

We got to the hotel around 11am sunday morning, the receptionist was loverly and very helpful.
As we didnt have a rep she gave us a map of the area, telling us where the strip and old town were located.
We got to our room and was happy with it, we was in block a, room 505.
A tv, remote control aircon, fridge, lights, desk, chairs inside and ourside were included in the room.
The safe cost us 12.50 euro for 7 days which was good value as usually you have to pay more plus a deposit.
The room key you are given is a metal fob, which costs 10 euro deposit, you can only have 1 key per room, dont lose it tho, it costs 50 euro to replace!

We went all inclusive, 8-10 in the morning is breakfast times.
We only got up once to have breakfast as we are young and was out late! It was nice tho.

11-5 is snackbar opening times.
When it opens, they have burgers, chips, rice, pasta noodles, cheese, ham, basic snacks really. You just go up and help yourself.
Drinks were SAGRES beer (not the best but drinkable!)
pepsi, fanta, juice, local spirits etc.

Dinner opens 6-9.30
Again, self service, the staff come to you for your drink orders.
The food was a 6/10 for taste and quality... it was a bit repetative...
I dont really like fish, so if there wasnt any chicken, i was on the chips rice and pasta!

The rooms were cleaned everyday, towels changed everyday.
Staff were friendly.
Pool area was clean.
Its a big place!
The beach is about a 3 minute walk from the pool.
I hope the photos attatched help!
Any other questions please ask!

Myself and my girlfriend arrived back at the end of the first week in June after staying at the Aurmar and read like yourself a mix bag of comments before going; some good and some bad.

Our experience was all good and whilst the decor was in need of renovation, let me assure you it won't put you off. The service was excellent and the staff were most helpful especially Juliana who was most hospitable. The only exception was one receptionist who looked like the bride of dracula. She proved to be as cold as ice with a face that could turn milk sour. But remember this, a smile with courtesy goes a long way when being either a guest or an employee of the hotel, so if you go with an open mind then make sure you have no heavy expectations and then you will find favour with the resort.

We booked B&B rather than HB, FB or all incusive. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend eating at the hotel 24/7 when there are much nicer restaurants, cafes, bars along the local strip and particularly in the old town centre which is a fair to long walk from the hotel or a 4/5 euro taxi fare. The decor as stated could be renewed and does look somewhat dated but then you're not really there to spend too much time inside the hotel are you!?

The poolside was well equipped with many sun loungers so you won't have the need to run down from your apartment to secure your place in front of the germans and the many many dutch. At the foot of the pool side area is a gate/door which allows access to the beach to the right hand side or alternatively a smaller alcove beach to the right.

The hotel has entertainment each and every night however unless you are midly amused by sitting on a plastic chair around a plastic table drinking weak beer watching either a trio of dancing parrots all night or 'not another' kareoke night then your probably better off making your way into the old town centre for better street entertainment/fire eating/comedy etc..

However, given the service was good, the linen was clean each and every day with the rooms being made tidy and the food for breakfast was more than passable and the location was excellent then given you pay less than £180 for 6 night holiday, you can't knock it.

And remember, don't pay too much credance to those who slate this hotel, the people are very good and willing to help where they can, just go with the right attitude yourself.

Rich & Ana, Dunstable.
