Alfagar II Aparthotel
Ranked #10 of 154 Hotels in Albufeira
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 10, 2011

i stayed here for a week in october with my boyfriend and we both loved it. the local beach is lovely and it is only at the back of the hotel. alfagar 1 looks very old and run down but alfagar 11 is a lot nicer. the rooms are absolutely massive with the biggest balcony i have ever seen with 2 doors leading from the lounge and the bedroom. you get a table and chairs and 2 sunbeds. the kitchen is fully equiped and is perfect for self catering. we only ate in the resturant for breakfast which was nice, just the usual continental breakfast. on the 1st night we had dinner but wasnt that keen. it is a nice 20 min walk into the local town but maybe not suitable if you get tired easily as it is quite hilly. we payed £380 each for a week half board and it was worth every penny.

When my wife and i decided to take her mum for her birthday to a sunny place, not too far away. So we decided for a short flight to the Algarve with my 2 children, their children and partners, and of course my mother in law. the Alfagar was mentioned to us by friends who stayed there previously, and when i saw the reviews on TripAdvisor we had no doubt that it was the place for us. The Alfagar 2 stands out for quality, services and facilities, everything is brand new, everything works, spacious and very clean. Nothing to complain about, large swiimming pool area, children playground, it also features a bar-restaurants just in case one doesn't feel like cooking, although nearby Olhos d'Aguas boasts an array of different restaurants, shops and amenities. Our transfer to the hotel was provided by a company called Yellowfishtransfers.com based in Albufeira, we have never used indipendent transfers companies before, but we will use them again next time we are in the Algarve. Total satisfaction with their services, we had 2 cars waiting for us at Faro Airport, as soon as we came out of arrivals they took care of our suitcases, directed us to the cars and....a free gift!!! Now that's a a nice touch! Who does this nowadays? I certainly recommend this company to anyone who travels to the Algarve, well done boys!
If you are staying at the alfagar and like walking, remember that the actual area presents itself for keen walkers or you can always rent a bike (very cheap by the way). We will come back sometimes next year and i know our 2 children (and respective families) will come back too.

Upside:
Brand new and beautifully built and furnished.
Rooms are very large especially if you pay the little extra for a sea view.
The gardens and landscape.
Very quiet even when busy because the area of the accommodation is like a large village.
Close to sea (via a very steep hill path).
Downside:
This aparthotel is quite remote. OK if you don't mind being 10-15 minute walk from the nearest restaurants and bars.
5 euros per hour for internet access.
On site food choice limited.

We have just returned from a one week holiday at the Alfagar II and enjoyed our stay very much. The weather was lovely about 22 most days which was very comfortable especially for young children. Our group consisted of 4 adults and 2 children aged 8 months and 5 years. The hotel was lovely very modern and the decoration was very contemporary . We found all the staff at the hotel friendly and helpful. Our room was on the second floor and was very spacious our balcony had a lovely sea view. We were half board and found the choice of food very good. The childrens pool was excellent with a great selection of water slides and flumes to suit all ages. The hotel was quite so plenty choice of sunbeds every day The only downside we found was at this time of year there was limited entertainment at the hotel in the evenings which meant you either walk for 20 mins along a busy road or get a taxi into town. Overall we would recommend this hotel.

My friend and I have just returned from a week at Alfagar 2; I would recommend this place to anyone! I’d booked us into Alfagar 1(the holiday village) through Low Cost Holidays but upon arrival the receptionist told us we’d been placed into the new aparthotel, Alfagar 2, which is part of the same complex. He assured us we wouldn’t be disappointed as the newly built Alfagar 2 is much more spacious, modern and well appointed. It also has a 4* rating as opposed to Alfagar 1 which is 3*. Anyway he was right, we certainly weren’t disappointed! Our apartment was large, spotlessly clean, contemporary in design and of a high quality finish. We had an enormous balcony (room for a table and chairs AND two sunloungers!) with stunning panoramic sea views. The beds were comfortable and we slept really well, although perhaps the many cocktails we sank each night helped!

We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis; breakfast is served as a buffet in the Alfagar 2 restaurant and can be eaten either indoors or out in the sun on the decked terrace. There was a good selection on offer – fry up, yogurts, fruit, bread, cold meats, pastries and cereal etc. It was very tasty, we certainly got our money’s worth and usually went back for two or three more helpings!

The complex offers spectacular sea views owing to its location on a cliff top overlooking the sea. The older part, Alfagar 1, is very pretty and has a village feel with its cobbled paths and low rise whitewashed apartments set within immaculately tended tropical gardens. We were able to use the facilities of both Alfagar 1 and 2 which gave us access to three pools, two bars, a supermarket and two restaurants. All three pools were extremely clean and amazingly quiet – no need to reserve your sunlounger with a towel here! Maybe it’s the time of year we went but there were never more than a handful of people around each pool. Unlike other hotels I’ve been to, there was no music, activities or entertainment round the pool but this was a plus for us as it meant we could relax in peace. The pool bars offer a good selection of reasonably priced snacks and we usually had our lunch here as there aren’t many restaurants within easy walking distance of the hotel. There is a snack bar on Santa Eulalia beach, but the menu consists mainly of expensive seafood dishes with only a few cheaper snack options.

The beach itself is accessed via steps directly from the complex; I found them to be nowhere near as tricky or steep as several reviews suggest! However, they bring you down into a small cove - the main area of beach is round the corner to the right - so if the tide is in, the main beach is inaccessible from here. Your best bet is to take a path which brings you straight out onto the main beach – you can walk along the main road, cut through the Santa Eulalia Hotel next door, take the path across the front of the hotel and down onto the beach through the car park. It’s a lovely, sandy beach but beware the sea is a bit chilly - you have to remember it’s the Atlantic, not the Med!

Before arrival, I was slightly concerned that the hotel was aimed at families and that we’d stick out like a sore thumb. We needn’t have worried though - there was a good mix of people and ages; groups of friends and couples as well as families. I also thought that the hotel may be a little remote for the nightlife, but turn left out of reception and a 20 minute amble along the main road takes you straight to the strip with all its bars, shops and restaurants. Albufeira old town is a much further walk but there is a noddy train which runs between the strip and the old town every twenty minutes. You can buy an all day ticket and hop on and off as often as you like! We tended to walk to the strip every evening, take the train to the old town for dinner and a few drinks, catch the last train back to the strip at 10.30pm, party until the small hours, then walk back to the hotel! The road is busy and well lit so we felt perfectly safe walking back at night. However, taxis to the strip aren’t expensive if you don’t fancy walking – about €3.70 before midnight and €4.70 after. For day trips to the old town, the hotel offers a minibus service departing outside reception at 10.00am and 2.30pm with a return journey at 3.00pm. This is not a courtesy shuttle as some websites state and requires you to buy a ticket at reception five minutes prior to departure, but a one way ticket is only €0.80.

This hotel for me was the best of both worlds – set within in a peaceful, relaxing location but within easy reach of the nightlife and shops. The fact we were upgraded for free from the more basic, dated Alfagar 1 to the luxury accommodation of Alfagar 2 made this holiday excellent value for money! All in all a wonderful stay, I would definitely come here again.

On first impressions, this is a great hotel. However, I did find my opinion dropped slightly as the week went on. In terms of the apartment itself, it was spacious, clean, and very well equipped. The one fault with the accommodation was the bed. I suspect they are not hotel quality and will not stand up to much wear and tear. Mine was hard and a bit ridged and my husband's was extremely creaky. Ok for one week, but really not a high enough standard for 4 star accommodation. My other quibble would be the towel service which we found to be a bit hap hazard. Sometimes we had five towels, sometimes three, sometimes we had bath and hand towels, sometimes just hand towels. We also had a problem with the bathroom door handle which we reported when we got there. Nothing was done until I complained a second time that a person would be trapped in the loo if they closed the door behind themselves. The pool area is great, with plenty of sun beds and the setting itself is very pleasant and restful. The beach is a must, despite the steps. The hotel is a distance from any real nightlife and some may find this not to their liking. Although when we did venture in to Praia D'Oura and Albufeira, we found them a bit too karaoke for our taste. The bus service that the hotel advertises is just a once a day thing, so don't rely on it. If you don't mind a walk head right rather then left out of the hotel and on down to the seafront where you find nice peaceful restaurants, especially in Olhos D'Agua. Beware the taxi drivers. We had a nightmare journey back one evening and walked after that. We only had breakfast in the hotel which was ok until they put up the price from €7 to €10 on a Tuesday in late September which seemed an odd decision. You can get breakfast for €2 (and much better tea!) in cafes about a 10 min walk away, so that's what we did. Would we go back - probably not. One visit was good, but nothing really to bring us back to this particular place again.
