We (family of four with two teenage kids) stayed at the Alfagar I Apartments - the older complex - on a 10 day self-catering holiday from the end of October to beginning of November 2012. We picked the Alfagar based on reviews and price, and we were not disappointed. The reception staff were friendly and helpful, getting us into our room several hours early when we arrived ahead of schedule. The apartment was a two bedroom sea view and was pretty perfect, with a spacious living-dining room and small, but more than adequate, kitchen. Small quibbles would be dust in the far reaches of cupboards/draws and no mugs for tea and coffee, but this really would be nit-picking. We opted for self-catering but had the hotel breakfast buffet most mornings - lovely food and great price at just 8.50 Euros (4.50 Euros for kids). We ate dinner in the Alfager I buffet restaurant once and while it was good, there are far better restaurants around (and at 17.50 Euros a head without drinks it turned out our most expensive meal!)
The kids loved the three outdoor pools, the indoor pool and the beach, accessed via steps leading down from the cliff-top, was beautiful. Directly below the hotel are two little alcoves before the main beach strip and this is where we spent most days.
The supermarket within the grounds isn't as badly priced as some have suggested, though there are better prices and a wider range available at the larger supermarkets.
The small cafe-bar served wonderful milkshakes and had entertainment every night, even this late into the season. The kids Karaoked and Dad got to watch some live football on Sky!
We found all the staff to be courteous, helpful and friendly, especially at breakfast and in the cafe-bar.
The location is excellent as well, with the more touristy 'strip' just a 10 minute walk away, and the Old Town a short car, taxi or bus journey. In the other direction there are more resorts worth a visit. The Old Town offered a good combination of lovely restaurants, souvenir shops, pubs and cafes and felt very safe and inviting, especially for families. Olhos De Agua and Villamoura are both worth a visit as well.
All in all the Alfagar provided a superb base for our first vsit to the Algarve, managing to feel like a home-from-home in a very short space of time. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: While the Alfagar II Apartments are newer and more modern, we would choose the Alfagar I again as th...

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for 1 week from 13th-20th September. We absolutely loved it, best self catering apartment we have ever stayed in. I was worried that it would be all families and not a place for couples but i had nothing to worry about because it really does cater for everyone! We didn't eat in the hotel itself so cannot comment, but we did eat in the snack bars at the Alfagar hotel & the village bar which was quite nice. There is free wi-fi in the village bar which is great. The resort has everything you could want, gorgeous pools for kids & adults, plenty of food choices in the bars, mini market which has a good selection. The room itself was a good size with a huge balcony. Spotless clean, cleaners were in 5 times in the 7 days we were there for! It's a good walk away from the strip but we worth it because the hotel was so good. We walked in during the day and when it was dark at night we got a taxi. Overall we had a great holiday and would highly recommend the Alfagar to anyone! PS. Taxis were quite slow at coming so order in plenty of time...

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view.

I booked this hotel based on its rating as a top family hotel and have to say it did exactly what it said on the tin. The rooms were very spacious, it felt like a little home fom home. The balcony was two rooms wide so enough space for sun loungers and a table for al fresco dining as we were self catering. We travelled with our 8 month old so have to say none of the facilities really suited but we kept thinking how great the hotel would be for any child over 2 ish. There were only a few minor niggles that mean I didn't score it a 5 star and they aren't worth mentioning. It is a four star hotel and it easily lives up to its rating.

We are fresh back from a week at Alfagar II and fully admit this hotel lives up to its excellent reputation. If you are looking for a clean, fun, family-friendly hotels then you’ve hit the sweet spot as this hotel is perfect. Its has numerous swimming pools with hydro slides and various other aqua-fun, tennis courts, a football pitch, mini-market selling everything you could want and restaurants/bars serving excellent food.

Our second-floor apartment was overlooking the pool area so provided a great view. We opted for self-catering due to having an infant and our biggest fear was an unclean or child unfriendly apartment. We needn't have worried. The provided baby cot looked like it came straight out of the box and the kitchen area was immaculate. The oven, fridge and other facilities in the apartment were immaculately clean; there really is NO scope for complaint here.
However, we paid for a sea view which technically we had, but only via binoculars really could it be classed as a sea view. The hotel does have private access to the beach, but there is a 140 step descent to the beach and its only the older Alfagar 1 apartments that will have what I class as a true "sea view" (but they are far, far less modern than Alfagar II). Other great on site facilities include a childrens play ground, a kids club/crèche, amphitheatre

Location wise Alfagar II sits mid-way between Balaia and Albufeira but there isn't much heading into Balaia (turning right out of the hotel) - all the action is in the *lovely* town center of Albufeira which is a delight, day or night. The walk was about 30 mins for us with a push chair so nothing too stressful.

This really is ideal if you have children - so much to do, spotlessly clean and conveniently only 30mins coach transfer from the airport which is ideal.
We stayed the last week of September / beginning of October and the place was probably only 50% full. Glorious sunshine, no queues, ample sunbeds, it really was perfect. We're going back to the same hotel at exactly the same time next year!

Loved it.

A couple of tips:
1) Dont buy soft drinks from the pool side bar - they're more than TREBLE the price of the same drink in the on-site supermarket which is seconds away.
2) If you have a push chair and want to go to the beach, head left on the main road for two minutes and there is a flat road heading down to the beach, so no steps!
3) Dont pay for the reception wifi - its completely free at the Alfagar bar and LOTS of places on the strip offer free wifi for web, Skype etc.
4) There is an on-site supermarket, one immediately opposite, but 30 second to the right of the hotel is another, better stocked, cheaper alternative.

Room Tip: Not worth paying for a sea view IMO. All apartments in Alfagar II are sea facing and none will have...

Wow, amazing hotel, its set in like a village, the trees and flowers make it stunning, great pools for all ages, fun slides, good parks, very clean, supermarket ok prices, staff very friendly. Appartment is huge, we have a 2 year old so he loved running about. Kitchen well equipped. Beds a tad hard but no bother, showers great. Was our first visit to Algarve and was very impressed, lovely little towns, never had a bad meal, folk very friendly, zoomarine was superb, if being a bit picky the sea is freezing and its not the med its not clear, beaches nice..... Did rain a tad but we did go end of sept, so had to be a bit expected, only a bit and did not ruin our holiday in anyway.
