We stayed at this hotel as a family of 4 in a one bedroom apt. for two weeks from 28th July -11th Aug. The hotel is situated high up above the old town of Albufeira.
We were impressed by the hotel from the minute we arrived to the moment we left. The reception staff were all helpful and friendly, and got us checked in quickly and directed us to our room. The apartment was spacious and fitted out to a high spec. and kept spotlessly clean by the maids. The kitchen area had a washing machine, dishwasher, oven, hob, fridge/freezer, coffee machine and a full range of utensils. The bathroom was a good size with modern fittings and fixtures. Both living room and bedroom beds were a decent size, although a little uncomfortable. Both rooms were air conditioned and the balcony was the biggest we have had in this type of room, with wonderful views over the old town and Atlantic beyond. One complaint that I did have with the room, is that there were only two chairs on the balcony. When I asked at reception for another two, I was told that there was only two chairs per room, which is unfortunate when there are four people in the room.
As previously mentioned, there is a shortage of sunbeds in the pool area, which results in the 'sunbed scramble' at 7 each morning, if you are not on a sunbed by 8, forget it! Although there are large grass areas to sit on around the pool. The pool side snack bar offers a good choice of snacks and sandwiches, at reasonable prices. The staff, Francisco, Fernanda, and Molylene work hard to keep the customers happy at all times.
There is a lack of entertainment at the hotel, but when I mentioned it to Pete (great guy) the Thompson's rep. he said it was because the hotel is known as a spa hotel for rest and relaxation. Not quite sure why there is a fully fitted gym then? There is an underground games room, but is in need of a makeover and the games need to be updated.
The hotel has a mini-supermarket across the road, which is open from 8 until 22.00 every day. It has marked up prices, but you pay for the convenience of it. Aldi and Lidl are a 10 minute walk away and have everything you will need.

Now to the 'dreaded steps'. These steps lead down to the old town, about a 5 minute stroll. We thought the steps were not as bad as previous reviewers had mentioned. Obviously not suitable for families with buggies, and people with walking difficulties, but what steps are? If, like us, you are puffing once you get to the summit, you are just unfit, like me! The Hotel runs a courtesy mini bus to the old town 4 times a day, the last one is at 5 in the evening. After that
The old town has a lovely ambience and nightlife, with plenty of restaurants and bars to suit all tastes.
All in all, I could not fault this hotel, and would recommend it, and would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: we were in room 512. Lovely view over the old town and panoramic views of the Atlantic ocean.

Stayed at the Cerro Mar Garden for 2 weeks from 28 th July. Impressive hotel with lovely, well equipped rooms. We had a 2 bedroom apartment on 4th floor. It had fully equipped kitchen including dishwasher, washing machine & full oven, 2 bathrooms & 3 Balconies! The views from the balconies were fantastic and they had sun on them part of the day. As mentioned in previous reviews & as seen in previous hotels there tends to be a sunbed shortage, resulting in the normal towel reservation system!! Staff do remove towels from unattended beds sometimes but if one person is with the beds then this tends not to happen. The steps, also mentioned in previous reviews , aren't too bad! Coming up during the day is the worst. If you take your time its ok. I wouldn't recommend to people with walking or breathing difficulties as once you get to the top of the stairs, there is still a slope to walk up before you get to hotel. There is a number of bars & restaurants in the town square our favorites were Sir Harrys ( near to steps, simple, reasonably priced snacky type food) & J C Bar ( Nice cocktails!). The Rock Bar was good too, good music bit expensive but we did get one round for free. There is a small supermarket across the road from the hotel but if you prefer to stock up with drinks etc, there is a Lidl which has been previously mentioned but also a newly opened Aldi, which is slightly closer. They are both about 10 minutes away but be aware neither of them accept british cards. The only other gripe i have about this hotel is the lack of entertainment, there was only one night of so called entertainment which involved a man singing karoke type songs. He was alright, I suppose.

Just returned from 10 day holiday here - the hotel is in an excellent location with fantastic sea views over the old town. As other reviewers have mentioned there is a large flight of steps but this takes you straight to the main square and after the first 20 or so steps they become much wider and easier to negotiate. The biggest down side is the pool - although room for many more sun beds are limited and nowhere near enough for the number of guests, particularly when guests from the other 2 blocks in the complex come over as cerro mar gardens has biggest pool. Although the hotel does not allow guests to reserve sun beds (and usually go round collecting towels in between 9 and 10am), most guests get round this by leaving one family member "on guard duty". Most sun beds were reserved by 8:30am every day we were there. This aspect really did spoil an otherwise lovely hotel.

Had a fabulous stay at this hotel, very clean, great food and staff helpful and friendly. Had a slight problem in room and called reception, all sorted in 10mins and nothing too much trouble. Poolside bar was great, food and drinks lovely. Was dreading the steps to the old town but not as bad as everyone said, sometimes nice to walk off heavy meal and cocktails. Loads of great bars and resteraunts within a 5-10min walk. Would recommend this hotel to friend and family (maybe not for people with buggies)
We had a 2 bed apartment which was very spacious also with a sofa bed. Slept 5 of us no problem. Kitchen very well equipped with washer and all mod cons.

Lovely place, friendly and chilled. Great value for money.

Stayed in the apartments just across from the main hotel with inclusive breakfasts - yummy.

10 minutes walk to the beach, 5 minutes to the old town.

Cerro Mar Gardens certainly lives up to its 4 star reputation, we had a 2 bed apartment, with 3 balconies and 2 with sea views. The apartment has all you need with a full size washing machine, dishwasher, fridge freezer and cooker. The staff were most welcoming from the reception staff to the maid service. The steps to the old town were fine if you took your time, we walked them almost daily. The bus stops for some of the excursions are not far from Lidls which is about a 10 minute walk from the apartments. Aldi is also nearby but we found Lidls had a greater range. Lots of restaurants in the old town had English speaking staff with a wide variety of food both English and Portugese. Whilst out walking we found a Chinese Buffett about 20 mins walk away which was super. The Chinese Buffett is actually next to McDonalds and KFC both of which were very busy!! No free wifi at the accommodation but plenty of places with free wifi in town. The beach was really lovely and the lemon cornettos were a real treat. A wonderful holiday and would go back tomorrow!

Room Tip: The higher floor you are on the better the sea view.

Stayed at the Cerra Mar Gardens for 10 days in July, having booked through Thomsons. Truly 4 star accommodation, two bed apartments had more than ample space, good balcony, well fitted kitchen area, even BBC1, 2, and ITV (useful during the Open Championship!!) and everywhere was spotlessly clean - apartments and public areas. All staff were very helpful and welcoming - reception staff were especially good. Only used the restaurant one night and dinner was a bit disappointing but breakfasts were good value and the staff very pleasant. All in all, recommend it thoroughly - would happily stay there again.

Room Tip: Two bedroom apartments are at the ends of the building and have massive balconies - and the extra be...
