This is lovely place to stay. We got a very good deal for a one bed appartment we were happy with the room as it was very spacious and clean ( don't understand other reviews) didn't have a good view but dont think any rooms really would have appart from the pool but then you would get road view as well. Pool was good but not heated so was very cold. can't say what food was like as we were self catering. Staff very friendly and helpful, bar good and happy hrs were cheap but not many in... Location was fab as only 5-10 mins from strip and prob bout 15-20 stroll to old town.
Overall great stay, would recommend to anyone.

GOOD/The hotel itself was very nice with very spacious rooms. We booked half board & expected a studio room so were very happy when we got a one bedroom apartment. The pool was a decent size and there were always beds available.

NOT SO GOOD/ The cleaners (i use the word lightly) did nothin more than re-arrange the bed sheets most days. Mid week we got new sheets & i presumed the bathroom would b cleaned too, but alas NO. The kitchen was not visited either other than to empty the rubbish. We were put off complaining when one day the maid inadvertently forgot to leave bath towels. We requested towels explaing the maid must have forgotten, well she arrived half an hour later & looked like she was going to burst into tears!!

BAD/ The restaurant was unbelievable. Ive had half board in many hotels but nothin like this!! It was in the basement level with no natural light, basic decor, with only a few tables laid. The choice was from 3 dishes (every day) no hot veg only salad. If any of the dishes were empty then you had to wait, we waited 25 mins one day !! The deserts were snapped up quickly & again a long wait till they were replaced. I guess the wine was free as consolation, well thats how we saw it. When we booked it back in December it said it had a gym/sauna and indoor pool ready early 2009. No gym etc & no work ongoing. We heard that the hotel was originally built to be sold as private apartments & that all work has stopped due to the recession.

If they could get the restaurant & cleaning right it could be a great hotel/apartment.

We arrived just after 7pm. Checki-in was a bit slow but nothing to complain about. First impression arround the reception area was very good..
Room.- we were allocated room 108, we we opened the door it look onto the round-about which was busy and noisy. Once you close the patio doors it is fine, but not much of an outlook. We asked to be moved and the lady gave us 3 keys to other apartments....we then chose the best one and moved all our stuff. We picked room 126 which got the sun from 6am -noon......The rooms are very wel equiped. large fridge freezer, hob, toaster, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine. The TV gives a few Brittish chanels.
Pool - clean and tidy, plenty of beds ect. Beer is €1.50 for small and €2.50 for large. Ice lollys are €1.80. Snacks consisted of various Pizzas at €9..(we did not have one).
Bar- We did not use the bar but it looked very nice and modern.
Games Room - Pool, darts internet.
overall, a fantastic complex in a fantastic location.

Local area - A couple of local supermarkets but these are over-priced. €3 for a loaf of bread. Nice bakery if you like fresh rolls/baggettes....it is located by leaving the hotel at the bottom level and turning right. keep going for about 70m and you will see it on your right (it is a yellow building) it was only 20cents for a small baggette. Go to the Mercado for your main shoppping. it is only a short walk away. Ask reception.
Lots of great eating places. the best we found was Alredos, it is near the top of the esculators that take you to the Old Town. if you stand at the top of the esculator and look towars the Alfonsos, take the steep road to the left and go up there for about 100m...it is on the left hand side. it is not Alfosnos, this was good but not as good as Alfredos.
Beer/Wine /Spirits - Ranged from €1 a pint to €6. 3 cocktails and a pint were €23...a bit steep but the atmostsphere was good. Old Town is a great night out.

My husband i and our ten year old grandson are just back from Forte do vale we stayed for a week the end of May begining of June and must say that the rooms are fab. Only mistake we made was going half board. the food was disgusting and no childrens menu. There was,nt much choice for Adults either, we also had to ask for teacups, milk bread for the toast, there was never any teabags out for tea. We could have understood if the waiters were run off their feet by all the people dining there but out of a full hotel there were only about 8/10 familys staying for meals. We got to see the manager about the meals for our grandson and he said that the children in portugal eat what meals that he had provided for us ie. boiled fish sloppy creamed potaotos for afters tinned fruit and jelly these meals would have been ok if we were 1* but it was 4*
all the families were realy fed up with the food and no amount of complaining help ,it just caused an atposphere in the dining room. On the third to last evening one of the waiters got a pizza for my grandson for his dinner and then the last two nigts there was pizza or burger and chips not very healthy i know but what child would sit down to boiled fish. or boiled lamb and boiled rice. We spent more money going to the Modella supermarket to get food for our grandson. A wonderful hotel spoiled somewhat by the awful food on offer. We would stay in this hotel again but would go selfcatering as the facilities in the rooms were exceptional.

The Forte do Vale is a beautiful hotel and the apartments are really spacious and decorated in a clean and modern style. As other reviewers have said, the kitchens are poorly equipped - especially the lack of a kettle! I thought I could get by boiling water in the microwave/on the hob but it was deriving me nuts by the end of the week! Pool area was gorgeous but be warned, there is no shallow end for kids. All 1.4 metres. There is a little splash pool but it was literally ankle deep on my 9 year old. The main pools are fine if your kids can swim but if not they will need arm-bands.

My biggest problem here was the location - you had to walk quite far to get almost anywhere and I don't go on holidays to walk!! Staff were lovely and the bar was reasonable - large beer 1.5 euro during happy hour. Most spirits were 4 euros but the measure is huge, more like a double at home. We didn't try the restaurant (due to it's poor reviews on here!) so can't comment other than to say it didn't LOOK much like a restaurant, more like a dining room in a much lower class of hotel.

There is a decent little restaurant called Cafe Expresso just past the supermarket Blue (come out the hotel rear entrance by the bar and turn right) - run by the very friendly Marianna. Their mixed meat kebab is great but the stroganoff was bland. 4.90 euros for their specials - English Breakfast, Chicken Piri Piri and a couple of other dishes. Staff in all restuarants will warn you that Piri Piri is spicy - it's not. At all. But it is tasty so try it. We also tried Tres Palmeras over the road from the hotel. It was average and pricey. If like me you get homesick for proper food, try the Kilt n Kelt Scottish Bar off the Strip. We didn't actually eat there but the food and menu looked great - you could have creamed potatoes or boiled baby new potatoes instead of chips. Being from Ireland, I was craving spuds by the end of the week! Prices were very reasonable there too. We ate at Wild n Co on the strip one night and had the best meal of our holiday but it was pricey (esp drinks) 175 euro for 4 adults and 1 child, main courses and drinks for all, 2 desserts. Worth it though. Try the Porterhouse steak - my boyfriend said it was the best steak he ever had. And his family farm cattle.

We went to Zoo Marine on the day trip and it was worth every penny. The dolphins and 4D cinema alone were worth the price. We also took the BBQ on the beach cruise on a Catamaran - DON'T DO IT. At least 70% of the passengers were sick and spent the entire 7 hours with their heads between their legs. I have never been so glad to have something end. Total waste of money and time.

One final thing - don't book the studio unless you can do no better. They all face the roundabout with just a partial pool view and ALL have sofa beds. The one bed apt is so much nicer. We upgraded from a studio to a pool view one bed for 100 euros after our first night.
