“Great Value and Location but could do better....”
Reviewed October 26, 2011

Stayed at Solaqua for one week at begining of October, I was worried about other reviews of overbooking so I called hotel day before we left to confirm booking.
We booked through TravelRepublic and got an absolute steal!
The hotel is ideally located for the old town(10min walk) Shopping centre and supermarket(1min walk) but is nicely set back from the main road so it remains peacefull at night.
We arrived late at night and the guy on reception was kind enough to bring us a fold down camp bed for my daughter and an iron and iron board. Reception staff friendly and helpfull with free map and advice on opentop tour bus etc.
Our room was 002 and although in lower floor with not a great view it was at end of corridor with only one room to side and no rooms opposite so was nice and quiet(just wish people upstairs would lift chairs rather than drag them along the tiled floor!)
Went SC and room had all the utensils and equipment needed.
The pool area was a let down(not cleaned well) and a severe lack of umbrellas but you could always get a bed. Tip: buy your own umbrella in old town(little shop at bottom of escaltors E8.50) good quality, cheaper than the supermarket near hotel and ideal to carry to beach too!
I would recommend taking the open top bus tour and head out towards Salgados, get off at bus stop and 5min walk to Salgados Beach - lovely sand, no noisey water sports and virtually deserted(not like beaches nearer town)
Enjoyed my stay at Solaqua, would I go back? Probably not, too many other places worth a try but yeah pretty good!

hotel was nice and staff friendly, but cleaning left a lot to be desired with just a quick wipe, dirty marks on floor outside our room were there for the 2 weeks, would much prefer the Auramar hotel which we stayed at last year and cant see why it was only 3 star and Solequa was 4 star Great supermarket nearby Solequa that had everything thay one could want. We had a fabulous holiday non the less and rooms were basically clean but much more than a quick wipe would have been a great improvement

We always read the reviews before we book somewhere, they always leave us a bit worried in some way and wish we never read them but with experience you learn to just go with an open mind as everyone is different. We were pleasantly suprised with this place, we stayed self catering for a week in a studio apartment which was perfect for just the 2 of us it was clean and modern with all the facilities we needed. The maid was on the little lazy side she would just come in to empty our bins, swill the bath and sink out, didn't often sweap or mop the floors (which I can tell thanks to my ever dropping hairs!) towels were only changed when we dumped them in the bath and bedding was never changed whilst we were there but I wouldn't do either of them every day at home so no worries there. I had hoped for a pool view but as usual with us we got the opposite though to be honest it wasn't a problem as you just overlooked the street and another hotel so it was very quiet rather that listening to the same CD they blasted out every day very loudly in the pool bar. Pool was lovely though a bit on the cold side (not the hotels fault!!) but a blessing when baking away in the heat, the pool area wasn't so clean we gathered the guy just hoses all the muck and fag butts towards the drains and just leaves it there in a pile rather than picking it up. So just a couple of improvements that should be made considering a 4*. Never really used the pool bar much though we did have toasties one day which were very nice and reasonably priced, not sure about a night though as the set up seemed a little strange so went out every night. The hotel is in a perfect location very cheap supermarket round the corner, Old Town 10 mins down hill, The Strip 15 mins the other way. Went to the strip during the day a couple of times for a cheap lunch never bothered on a night as we could tell what sort of a night it would be and although we are early 30's and love a good drink and a laugh it wouldn't be to our liking. Can highly recommend a the dutch bar "Bom Appetite" on Estr de Santa Eulalia which is another further 5 mins after The Strip (turn right at Globe Roundabout, on the left) but well worth it they do some fantastic food both English and Dutch we tried both and a cheap but good strong jug of Sangria. We loved the old town it had loads of restaurants and bars, yes it did have some tacky ones but nowhere near as bad as The Strip. We lived in Sir Harry's not the cheapest around there but only by a few cent has a good atmosphere, live bands, great service and you can watch whats going on around the square. We had some great meals and you can do it cheap if you need to but good quality too if you wander about a bit. There was a fantastic Italian restaurant can't remember the name but walking from the escalator to the square it's on your right opposite "Bank" restaurant, reasonably price, very good quality and the Bruschetta Capri is to die for! From the hotel - Tim Tim's chinese buffet over the road and to the left a bit from our local supermarket (above McDonalds and KFC) only 9.95, had a fantastic choice and good quality too. If you turn right onto the main road from the supermarket going towards the strip there are 3 Indian restaurants in a row .....can remember the 2 we never went to just not the one we chose but it's the middle one again that was reasonably price, very good quality and great service. Absolutely loved Albufeira, more so the Old Town and would definately go back again possibley next year as we found a week wasn't long enough this time.

I have recently stayed at Sol Aqua with my partner for two weeks.
When we first arrived the staff were very freindly and helpful, they told us that check in was at 12.00 and we were to leave are luggage in a safe room.
12.00 arrived and we got given our card for our room, the room was just right for us :)

.Good Points.
Well looked after rooms, fairly modern and nice veiw from balcony.
Good sized pool and plenty of sun beds and umbrellas.
Freindly helpful staff.
Great walking distance to near by mall and both The new and old town.

.Bad points.
Not alot of bowls or glasses.

We stayed at the apartments in 2008 when they first opened and we had no complaints. We decided to go back in 2011. This is not a 4 star hotel. The rooms are spacious with everything you need. The maid did pop in everyday to empty the bins and clean the bathroom. The floors and rugs could have been cleaner. The poolside was not cleaned at all. Every morning we would go out to find straws, wrappers and fag buts lying around. The sunbeds and umbrellas were broken and not looked after. There did not seem to have much staff. The small bar area did have a basic menu. When we first went in 2008 the waitress would come and take your order, this time we had to wait at the bar to be severed and sometimes get our own cutlery etc. The pool was freezing and not pleasant to get into, even when it was 30 degrees. Good points - great location for both the old town and new. The supermarket is on the doorstep with lots of choice. Rooms have everything you need, except an electric kettle. I think next time we will be looking for somewhere else to stay.

Room Tip: Poolside rooms have a better view !

Myself, my wife and our 8 month old daughter have just enjoyed a week at the Solaqua Aparthotel. We had a 1 bedroom apartment over looking the pool on a self catering basis. We booked through hotels4u.com and after reading some other reviews I was nervous. I phoned the hotel 2 days before travelling and they confirmed everything was ok with the booking.

We booked the transfers through the same website. Transfers were fine, took approximately 50 minutes, we were the last to be dropped off. Check-in was fine, receptionist was friendly and told us about the hotel, the room and the services on offer. The down side was we requested a highchair and kettle, we were told at check-in they did not offer a highchair facility, which is not ideal and the kettle is not electric, need to use the electric hob to heat the water.

The apartment was spacious and fairly modern, a balcony in the main living area and the bedroom as well as individual AC units. Kitchen is not very well stocked, 1 teaspoon, 3 of everything else including cups and plates, only 1 pot and 1 frying pan for cooking, a combination microwave/oven/grill and 4 electric hobs. There is a coffee machine. There is plenty of cupboard space for clothes. There is a hairdryer in the bathroom, my wife said it was better than most hotel dryers. There is a small flatscreen tv in the living area, with mainly british and dutch tv channels.

There is a great supermarket along the street inside the shopping mall about the size of a Tesco Extra store selling everything from wine (€2 for a great bottle of wine) to aptimal and nappies, we were took all this with us so might help save some luggage space (brand nappies were €16 for 62)

Albuifera in general was not what we were expecting, it is similar to a spanish Costa resort, we were hoping for a more tranditional feel, but still had a great holiday. If you have a stoller then beware of the pavements. All the pavements, wherever you go, are uneven tiles (feels like walking on cobble stones) so your stroller will take a bit of a beating and you may find yourself walking on the road

Hotel is approx 15 minutes walk, mainly downhill, to the old town where there are lots of bars, reastaurants and street performers, nice to walk around at night. The red city sightseeing tour is €13 per adult for 24 hours, personally I didnt think it was worth the money, neither is the little train, €4 per adult for 24 hours, theres only 3 stops, one at the new town strip, one round the corner from the hotel and the other at the top of the old town steps. If you don't want to walk back to the hotel from the old town it is €4 in a taxi, so cheaper than the train.

The main downside of our holiday was the pool, it was very very cold, even though the mercury didn't drop below 30 degrees our entire stay. The indoor pool is the same, although maybe 2 degrees warming than outside. They do provide alot of toys for kids to play with in the pool but only the very brave go in. This would be my only concern for returning to the Solaqua, it was in a great location (about 15 minutes walk to the beach and old town) and nice clean apartment (towels changed daily - no pool towels provided by the hotel).

Room Tip: Book an apartment and request a pool view
