We loved Marvao and would recommend it, but be careful about leaving valuables in your car! Last week (July 2013) all of our luggage was stolen from the trunk of our rented car. At the police station we learned that 4 other cars were broken into in that area on the same day. If you must leave luggage in your car, be sure at least to keep your passports, electronics, and all of your money with you. The same is probably true of any similar town, where you have to leave your car in a parking area and then walk up to to the town.

The views from the castle are spectacular. Truly a beautiful place. Great place to capture the sunset, watch the swallows chase one another in the sky as you take in a castle that is well preserved!!!!

We arrived in the evening just as they were about to close. The young lady who was working there welcomed us in and told us to take our time, and enjoy! It is a nice castle with amazing views in every direction!!!

Rarely have we come across such complete castle walls encircling the entire town. The views are immense and you feel as though you are in an eagle's eyrie. On a clear day you can see forever.
The walls of the castle buildings are intact to a large extent and with the aid of the excellent guide leaflet you can imagine life within the walls. It is possible to walk the entire circumference of the town on the top of the walls. Amazing.

We had read other reviews about the poor footpaths, steep slopes etc but lets get a reality check - this is a fortified rock outcrop. Take some easy shoes, dont rush, sit and soak up the scenery around, the architecture and history. This is one not to be missed!!
