Pousada de Marvão is a lovely place in the near south of Portugal, located in a lovely small village. Its staff is wonderful and extremely helpful, above all, Mr. José. The food at the restaurant was very good. Although we stayed in a small room at the old part of the hotel, The new rooms are more spacious. The hotel plus the charming village is worth a visit, but in late spring or summer since at the beggining of november it was very rainy and extremely windy. It was the beginning of your trip, which was folloed by Estremoz and Arraiolos, already reviewed.

Marvao is just a spectacular place. I'd recommend staying here overnight to enjoy the wonderful evenings rather than coming on a day trip. We had two nights here and had a great relaxing time. There isn't really anything special about this Pousada other than the fact it is in Marvao with an amazing view, but the view is outstanding. We paid extra for a Superior room which is worth doing to make sure you are in a room with a view, although even then the rooms are small - there isn't much space in Marvao!! All the staff were very friendly. Breakfast was good. We didn't eat here in the evening as there are other wonderful little places to eat in Marvao that also have the same amazing view. Definitely glad we visited here.

Room Tip: Its worth paying extra for a Superior room to make sure you get a good view - the view is the main r...

I'm sure someone has already said that this little town is Marvao-lous. Come for the simply unbelievable views (you are almost 900 metres up) over Portugal and Spain. Come for the experience of driving over steep ultra-narrow cobbled streets, some of which have two-way traffic. Come to stroll round the ramparts at sunset. The hotel offers you the base to do all this, and you are practically shut off in a little world apart. We arrived in a rare rainstorm and our room was freezing. They lent us a heater which we ended up keeping on all the time as the tiled floor stayed so cold (great in summer, no doubt). The bathroom had a wall heater of its own, but the window had to be opened to clear the steam. So: we spent as little time as possible in the room. BUT the staff are wonderful, the food is pretty good, the view from the restaurant is one I could happily look at forever, and the bar/lounge is very comfortable (and well-heated when the weather demands). In judging this pousada, you need to imagine the sheer difficulty of creating and maintaining good-quality hotel spaces in a collection of adapted old houses down a couple of alleyways on top of a very big rock!

What a truly fantastic experience, we had driven down from Santander and were unsure what to expect. We have stayed in a number of Pousadas all over Portugal but this has to be the most memorable. The journey up the mountain to Marvao is spectacular, the welcome from the staff first class. We were given a choice of rooms to choose from. Dinner excellent, the staff made a thorough fuss of us, no complaints at all. The walks round the village and the castle are a must and the talking parrot in the small bar we found made the whole event memorable.
We will definitely be back.

Pousadas have a great view or a great history and as such are usually attractive places to stay. They are also priced accordingly. The one in Marvao, too, has great sights from the lobby, restaurant, and most of the rooms, and the village itself enjoys breathtaking views that you don't easily forget. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful. Our experience on the whole was good -- but not quite outstanding. If you don't mind dragging your stuff along a steep alley uphill and then downhill for some 200 meters, from your car to the hotel, and if you don't mind a bathroom that begs for maintenance (leaking tap, broken tiles), then this Pousada is the place for you. In that case don't hesitate, for it will be quite an experience.

Room Tip: When reserving, make it a point to get a room with a view. They are not all equally located in that...

On top of it's mountain this pousada is located right in the middle of the medieval town Marvao, surrounded by the 13th Century fortified walls close to the castle. Narrow streets to drive through but very well to be reached by car and even with a few free parkingspots in front of the entrance of this pousada. The view from our balcony corner-room was breathtaking as well as from the dining area. What a toplocation! The kindness and service of the senior reception staffmember was wonderful. Due to the fact this visit had a special connotation for us he surprised us with fresh fruit and a bottle of champagne on the house and he even pointed out the possibility for special discounts during our stay. What a nice customerfriendly man! A rolmodel for many others in this profession.

Dinner and breakfast is of good quality and free wifi is available. This spot is very much to be recommended. The staff speaks Spanish, English, French and Portugeese.

We stayed 2 nights at Pousada Santa Maria in standard room on B+B basis as part of fly-drive holiday to Alentejo. The striking feature of this hotel is its location. Pousada is near the top of Marvao village which means a level walk to the castle but a hairy drive up very narrow, steep, yet still 2-way streets - once we finally found the pousada, we were advised that the road following the village walls would have been slightly easier than the road we took - but either way, unless you park outside the walls and drag your luggage, you have to steel yourself for sharp bends and reverse hill starts if you encounter another car. The pousada is a character property so lots of steps, nooks and crannies. Our bedroom was spacious, but rather dark (it overlooked the street) and the air con didn't seem to work properly. The lounges and dining room have fabulous views. Reception was unfailingly smiley. Delicious cheese served at breakfast and ate a super dinner, beautifully served in the restaurant which was relatively more expensive by Alentejo standards, but excellent quality

Pros
* Location with fantastic views (through large windows) from dining room and cosy lounges
* Classy food served with style in restaurant
* Helpful staff
* Marvao is unique walled hilltop village with special, peaceful atmosphere (much quieter and less touristy than for example, Obidos near west coast)

Cons
* Challenging drive within Marvao to get to Pousada - I found drive so stressful, I almost wished we'd stayed at Castelo de Vide and visited Marvao for a day trip, although my husband felt the the overnight 'cut off' atmosphere was worth the hassle
* Bedroom/bathroom could benefit from some refurb although have to recognise it is character property
* Small village, so limited choice of eating places, especially in the evening - we found Casa do Povo cafe/restaurant offered much better value and service than the Varanda
* An obvious point but the steep inclines, steps and cobbled streets make Marvao difficult for people with mobility problems
