“Luxurious but something missing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2013

This hotel is beautiful, it has a spa, a beautiful pool (indoor and outdoor), an excellent restaurant and imaginatively designed rooms, but it misses out from an excellent rating due to a few small issues.

The service is enthusiastic but slightly amateurish, which for a Starwood Hotel I would not have expected. The staff were all very young and supervised by one or two experienced staff. They were all welcoming, spoke foreign languages perfectly, were knowledgeable about the local area and enthusiastic, but they had not got the experience to anticipate the needs of guests like someone of more enthusiasm would and were slightly nervous all the time, which spoiled our relaxation a little (although not much, as I say they were lovely).

The hotel itself is very large compared to the sort I generally stay in, and whilst I was worried that would mean guests were crowded together the opposite was true and it would have been nice to have a little more life in the bar and common areas (except the pool where it was great to have the pool to yourself and a couple of other guests).

Evora itself is a beautiful town and very well located for other attractions nearby. We spent our holiday relaxing and so got up fairly late before we went out in the midday heat to sight see and therefore could only manage a few hrs before returning to the pool to cool off. If you are more serious about seeing the local historical and cultural attractions it is worth getting up earlier as most are closed between 1 and 3pm.

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for having chosen Convento do Espinheiro, A Luxury Collection Hotel & Spa and for taking the time to share your opinion through Trip Advisor.

Although we are happy to learn that in general you enjoyed the hotel and our beautiful region, we are sorry that your stay was not totally up to your expectations, mainly due to the service provided by our team. This is in fact a challenging time of year for us, when we receive several hotel school trainees for their internship, and your valuable feedback only confirms that we must be more focused and consistent with "on-the-job" training and supervision of these young members.

Despite the points mentioned, we hope that we may one day have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Convento do Espinheiro.

Kind regards,

We stayed for 3 nights in a suite with a queen bed. Room was spacious and very comfortable. Really liked the bath products and the excellent shower. Nesprsso coffee machine in the room was great.
Hotel was well located to reach all the tourist places by foot. The station is only a short walk away and easily done with suitcases.
Very pleasant breakfast but thought this would have been expensive had we not booked it as inclusive with our package.
Hotel has a nice bar to have a relaxing drink at the end of the day.
The receptionists were very friendly and helpful. Flavoured iced water drinks in reception were a nice touch.

This was already the second stay in this hotel and we will definitely come back. It is perfect for those who want to escape from urban agitation. The hotel is a rebuilt convent located outside of Evora city. You can see some before-after pictures on facebook, what they have done is really awesome, keeping great balance between an up-to-date hotel and the historic background of the building.
From Lisbon airport we rented a car, its a bit more than one hour driving and easy to find. Parking is free. As my boyfriend is SPG Platinum, we were upgraded to a suite both stays. Our room 153 was at the end of the new builing with balcony to some deserted back garden. It is a bit of a walk to breakfast area etc, but we liked it for its isolation.
Breakfast is located in the old part of the building. You can choose to sit inside or outside, both has its charm. During peak time it sometimes is a bit noisy inside because of those high old walls. The breakfast itself is absolutely fine. If you read about a lack of variety you should consider that this is a small hotel with only a small amount of guests. We didn´t miss anything and the qualitiy of the food is really good.
The pool area, gardens etc. are spacious, well-kept and also have this special charm. There also is a playground for the smaller ones and a tennis court. Wherever you are, there are always only a few other people.
Inside you have another pool, sauna and steam bath and a fitness room. You can also have some spa treatments, but we didn´t use that.
The only thing which needs improvement is the room service. During the first stay we had room service twice but didn´t get exactly what we ordered. Qualitiy was ok but of course pricy compared with the local restaurants. This stay we only had room service once and weren´t really happy. The Burger was two Mini Burgers and the side-dish vegetables weren´t as good as last time. The taste was ok, but no alternative to those nice restaurants in Evora.
The staff is speaking proper english, is friendly, always willing to help and never going the easy way. E.g. as we asked for information about a trip to Monsaraz, she not only printed the directions but asked us which language we´d prefer. That might sound trivial, but we have been to enough top hotels (st.regis etc.) where they sometimes just want to get rid of the customers needs and we really appreciate that here they are glad about every customer they are allowed to serve. Only the spa staff seemed a bit different and not as warm-hearted, can´t tell why but it just didn´t invite to book a treatment.
IF you want to leave this wonderful place, Evora is really nice to visit. From the roof top of the cathedral you have an awesome view over Evora and the countryside. The cathedral itself is like a tiny version of the lisbon Jeronimos. Just walking through the small streets is also nice. For dinner there are a lot of options, just check tripadvisor for the best rated restaurants, the local dishes are very good and it´s really cheap. Just be aware that during holidaytime in portugal (July/August) a lot of restaurants are closed. For a longer trip we can recommend visiting Monsaraz, a really small historic village on a hilltop with a mediaval castle and stunning view over the region.
We are already looking forward to visit again next year, it´s just the perfect holiday - relaxing and quiet, good food but also nice things to do.

I have been to Beijing. And Seoul. And Hong Kong. Not to mention the Starwood Hotel where all US presidents stay or have stayed in Rome. And Paris. And London, And Madrid. And the US: New York, Washington DC, Atlanta, Seattle; the last time I was at Convento do Espinheiro, I was lucky enough to be upgraded to Room D. João II... Here is my feedback: if heaven was to come down to Earth, this would be the place! Definitely the best place I have ever been.
Ask for Mr. Diniz and he will show you the hotel with the full story of the history the convent. Not to mention pointing you to some of the best restaurants in Portugal . Honestly, I am overwhelmed!

Room Tip: Ask for an upgade to rooms in the old convent.

Beautifully restored convent in the outskirts of Évora. Opted for the old part of the building. Got room 219, with a private small balcony with lovely view. Very comfy bed. Needs a bit of a revamping, while keeping the old atmosphere. Beautiful restaurant. Only had breakfast there. Staff very attentive and consistently willing to help. Large garden with big pool. The place is resplendent at dusk. Stunning chapel and cloisters. Pricey but worth it.

Room Tip: Room 219, in the old part of the hotel.

the ambience is nice, the service is very kind and the breakfast is delicious, but there's something missing in this convent-turned-hotel.
maybe soul...
although the staff is very kind, the service is not worthy of a five-star classification. the bartender of the swimming pool bar was away from the bar for more than 45 minutes. i had to call reception twice to get a drink by the pool. by the way, the pool is nice but small for a 94 apartment hotel.
the suite in the moden part is spacious and nicely decorated, but pray to get a room closer to the spa or you'll have to walk for everything.
the shower in the apartment doesn't get cooler at all and nobody is capable of giving a reasonable reason for it (they even said it was because it was a hot day and the water in the pipe was hot! c'mon! the water was cool in the sink but warm in the shower!).
the atmosphere is a bit odd, insecure between formality and laid-back.
and it is really a pit because we were very anxious to start our holidays with satyle but fund disapoitment instead. i sure hope they solve this matters and become the great hotel they can be.

Room Tip: the rooms int hte convent oart are small and with tiny windows. choose the modern rooms in the spa b...
