The old part of the hotel is amazingly beautiful and very well restored. But the furniture, the tables in the cloister, the billiard table and the big TV screen in the common room are terrible and cheap and more so the sad couches and armchairs scattered around the hotel. The annex is a terrible box of concrete, which totally lacks any sense (how they managed to get permission for that, escapes me).
The rooms and bathrooms, even though clean and nice, could be anywhere in the world. The window of my room was chained to the window sill so I couldn’t even open it (Really? Do people throw themselves out if left open? ) The quality of food at breakfast was average and they never came by for refill. All in all an ok stay but lacking the 'wow' factor we were expecting.
Evora was a big letdown, not what we were expecting at all. A nice town but scruffed and let down, like hundreds you can visit all over Europe, not worth the extra mile. The region, the Alentejo, on the contrary deserves the trip: a beautiful area with vinyeards, flowers, amazing landscapes for miles and miles. A must see is Monsaraz and the view from up there of the Alqueva lake. Amazing!More
