“elegance and modern at the same time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2011

This is a unique hotel because of its origin as a Convent. It still retains a beautiful restored Church, one of the most beautifull in all of Alentejo. Yet at the same time it is a very modern hotel with all the luxury that you expect from a hotel of this level. It is without doubt one of the most beautifull hotels in the Alentejo region. It is next to Evora, a superb World Heritage city but also close to so many beautifull towns and villages of this incredible region.

The hotel staff could not be more helpful. The rooms are big and have every comfort. The Spa is excellent. The re-use of the old part of the building has been done in such an elegant and stylish way and yet it is such a modern hotel as well. I know of no other hotel that has such a large garden and vistas over the countryside.

Room Tip: There are differenr types of rooms from the old convent to design rooms. The design rooms are big an...

On a recent trip to Portugal we had a chance to stay a couple of nights at Convento do Espinheiro, and they were simply phenomenal! As you may have read elsewhere, the Convento is a 15th century monastery that has been carefully restored and expanded with additional guest room wings and a spa. We stayed in the main building (the old convent atrium) in a large and tastefully appointed Dom Manuel I suite, featuring exclusive views of Dom Manuel’s private gardens. The entire stay was absolutely fantastic, with a unique combination of transcendent ambience and fabulous service. We often come across great places that are not so well managed, but this one clearly shows that whoever is in charge really knows what he/she is doing. We were celebrating my wife’s birthday and the staff must have picked this fact up from her passport, because they went out of their way to shower her with compliments and small gifts at various points of our stay. She ended up receiving wine, champagne, chocolate truffles, a fruit platter, and even a bottle of extra virgin olive oil with the Convento’s brand. On our first night we were planning on dining off-site at “O Fialho” but ended up postponing it to the following evening because the on-site restaurant (“Divinus”) was featuring live Fado music and bustling with customers. It was a memorable meal well-paired with great Alentejo wine (I highly recommend Mr. Christiano, the Sommelier). The chef was kind enough to visit every table. We visited the Convento’s gorgeous spa but did not use it. The grounds around the property are impeccably kept. I am usually very critical of hotels, but we truly had an amazing experience at the Convento and can hardly muster enough words to praise the property, service, and management. We look forward to coming back some time soon.

Room Tip: In the Convent itself (not the adjacent wings).

Legend says Our Lady has appeared over a bush in flames to a sheppard. The story spread and people throughout the region flocked to come here in procession.
So in the XV century a church was built church that turned soon into a monastery. The monarchs of Portugal were quite fond of this place. D. Afonso V came to ask for protection and offered to Our Lady a Silver Statue of him at a horse. D. João II called here the courts several times. It was here a plot was done to kill the king, but the abbot heard everything and the plot failed.
D. Manuel I was also frequent guest in this convent. It is said he received here the message of the found of the maritime way to India. Several of his sons were buried here.
Many other kings, including Philip the III of Spain stayed here.
In the end of XIX century in Portugal, the religious orders were extinct and the convent sold by a small amount of money and fell in decay.
Today, the old convent is recovered as a hotel. The old part of the convent is wonderful, the cloisters and rooms around it very special. The area around the hotel has nice gardens and a swimming pool.
However, the place is not within the center of Évora and you need a car to get there. The new wing built tries too much to look old.
The restaurant is a bit pretentious and quality of the food does not match prices charged.

The hotel was one of the highpoints of our trip to portugal and a great way to end our trip. Service was excellent and the hotel itself was fascinating. We were given a 45 minute tour of this restored convent that resembles a kings castle. The hotel actually had a church located in the hotel that wasalmost as elaborate as any church we visited in Portugal. It is not located in town but staying here is worth that small inconvenience. I would suggest staying here at least two nights.

Beautiful location on rural roads. Great for a long walk. Food is excellent. Breakfast is included and extensive. Rooms are wonderful, big, clean, with a private outside sitting area. Fitness room, bar, wine-tasting, free tour of the church, friendly employees. Bathrooms are fabulous. Plenty of closet space. Huge desk.

Room Tip: A room on the first floor near the gardens allows you to walk outside right from the room.

This is a lovely property situated outside the town walls (you will need a car, though they do have a shuttle service). Restored convent with spacious rooms, great dining room, and a very helpful staff. Dario at the front desk is especially helpful and will ensure your stay is filled with memorable restaurants, wineries, etc. (his directions are also exemplary).

Room Tip: The newer section's rooms have balconies - the convent rooms are wonderful.
