We wAlked around the university looking into classrooms to see some of the tiles. It"s a lovely place and very welcoming -- or at any rate not hostile to strangers wandering about.

Try and obtain a - need to pre book guide. Dates back to 1559 and is the second oldest University in Portugal. Its a good example of classic renaissance style.

Just behind the cathedral and the Roman temple, we were glad we got to the Evora University before it closed. The city as a whole is beautiful, so you wouldn't guess what is in store for you as you look at the building from the outside. But as soon as you step into the place, from the Church to the cloister and the Azulejo-walled classrooms, this is a great place, one of the most beautiful, albeit tiny, universities we have ever seen.
Entry is free. They have a student shop just like on US campuses where you can buy goodies such as T-Shirts (8€), pencils (0,50€), Evora university mugs (less than 5€), notepads...
Girl t-shirts on sale were 3€.

After reading the other reviews of the university here, I was a bit confused as to what we might find at the university. I'm sorry to say that having been there myself, I can't completely clear up the mystery. Let me explain.

It is of course a working university, which meant that after we entered and started walking around, we were surrounded by students and an air of study - most of the beautifully decorated classrooms were in use, so we could only have a peak from the outside. The hallways and stairways are also marvelously decorated, though, so we got our fill of those.

We spoke to a couple of different students to help us find our way around. We didn't want to go too far since again, we didn't want to disturb anyone since we were trespassing in a sense. We didn't see the library or the chapel, but we felt that we saw plenty as it was.

The large church directly adjacent to the university is not part of the university, nor is there an entrance from the university halls into the church. The people we spoke to said that the church is only open for services. There IS an entrance to the university grounds just to the right of the church, and the main entrance to the university quad/cloister is further down the road away from the church and the center of town.

Well worth visiting, even if you go in by the main entrance and just explore the quad (as we saw a number of tourists doing) - however, if you walk a little further, there is much more to see, especially of the azulejo decorations.

As it's a public building, anyone can enter and leave at any time (depending, of course, of the University's schedule).

Great place to take some photos and the building itself is not far from other beautiful attractions in Evora.
