“I didn't want to leave!”
Reviewed July 2, 2013

Every positive comment you've read on this hotel and their amazing staff is 100% accurate. I recently spents 2 wonderful nights at the Albergaria do Calvario (6/26-6/28/13). Upon arrival we were invited to sit down in the courtyard and enjoy a glass of wine. The staff sat with us and gave us a map along with suggestions for things to do and restaurants to try. The room was large and immaculate. The breakfast was delicious and filling. We also ate lunch there before our departure and the pumpkin soup was to die for!! Had I known how great this hotel was and what a beautiful town Evora is, I would have stayed longer. I would recommend this hotel to everyone and would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in room #15. It had 2 twins beds which could be pushed together or separated. The room h...

Everything was perfect! Our car rental broke down in Evora and they went out of there way to help us deal with the rental company. They speak perfect english and are the best hosts you could imagine and greet you with a drink when you are ready to sit down and decide what you want to do in Town. . It was good that our car broke down in Evora because you can walk everywhere in town. The bedroom was very comfortable and relaxing. The breakfast is OUT OF THIS WORLD! Everything you want for breakfast is FREE! You can even walk to a local winery.

I stayed in a number of very nice hotels during my recent trip to Portugal but the service and quality of this hotel was a level above all others. The building itself is incredibly well cared for and inviting, with great open common areas with soft couches and chairs to relax. The welcome I received from everyone at their front desk was genuine and really made me feel at home. It was great that they had created a little booklet with all sorts of suggestions to best experience Evora and its surroundings.

The breakfast... Wow! The quality of the buffet food was exceptional, and the addition of a small menu of items you could ask to be made to order was great too. After several weeks in Europe, it was a real treat to have pancakes with real maple syrup! I loved their variety of fresh squeezed juices, too.

A wonderful, wonderful spot entirely deserving of its spectacular reviews!

This was our 2nd stay at Albergaria do Calvario and it did not disappoint. Having very stressful careers all we wanted was to rest and relax. I can certainly say that everyone in the hotel helped us to do just that!

The hotel was still immaculate. Clean, traditional, comfortable, relaxing. The rooms are so relaxing.

The staff are fabulous - they make you feel like you are the only client that they have - their customer service skills are amazing!! The whole stay is an experience - the ambience of the hotel, the friendliness of the staff. Their personalities are really evident throughout the hotel.

A truly happy, fabulous experience.

Yeah, every positive aspect of this hotel I read on TripAdvisor is true, great location, good facility and most of all, the staff make the stay extraordinary. On the road we see sights and stay in different places but often we remember certain people we encounter more than anything, the stay at Albergaria will be one of those interesting experiences!

Room Tip: Take a premium room, comes with a patio, great when the sun is out. No elevator but staff will help...

No need to reiterate the many praises sung about Albergaria do Calvario - they are all true and unexaggerated. Just add our names to the list of thoroughly satisfied guests who would love to return to this comfortable and accommodating small hotel. John, Carla and Hugo are three of the hosts we met who charmed and guided us with their knowledge, sincerity and assistance. For those of you wondering if this kind of attentive service means an invasion of privacy - do not worry. The staff excels at understanding the different expectations and needs of travelers. Our two days in Evora were highlights of our trip due to the staff's vast knowledge of the area and their willingness to help us. From restaurant reservations to finding a place for our sons to meet local university students, the staff went above and beyond. Thank you to everyone at the hotel - we hope to see you again!

This hotel is a modification of a former olive-pressing facility.

It is very solid, thick walls, earthen-style tile floors throughout. Furniture is very appropriate – metal frames in a Porto-Spanish style, with thick seat cushions for comfort. Mostly marble bathroom, nicely fitted, our first place that had a shower enclosure only (as opposed to bath with hand shower option) which we actually prefer, although we did find that it leaked very slightly. Towels were above-average. Good-quality toiletries but only enough for one person other than the soap. I’m sure they would have provided more – my spouse doesn’t use the hotel toiletries anyway so not actually an issue for us. The split-style air conditioning was quiet and worked well. I rated my mattress as A++ - by far the best on this trip, better than those at 90% or more of the places I have to endure in business travel, actually comparable to our mattress at home (yes, it’s a costly one). Free wifi easy to access, works well.

Very easy to find, right inside the wall at one of, if not THE, main gates. Beautiful central courtyard which appears to catch the breeze sufficiently on all but the hottest days (sun umbrellas provided).

Breakfast as everyone commented is outstanding.

What really propels this establishment to the fifth star is the staff. They are like a luxury hotel costing several hundred more dollars a night. Luggage whisked up to our room from the car, car parked in the actually far from intimidating underground garage by the staff, full of tips and advice about viewing town, restaurant reviews / opinion, small but high-quality selection of books about the area, and Monolithic-era Europe, that guests are welcome to read, fast, friendly and efficient service in the bar or courtyard – well done, folks! Made a reservationfor us which is not usually necessary but most of the restaurants are closed on Sunday nights.

Melinda ( I think that’s her name, the lady from Sydney) arranged a very personal wine tour for us which, along with the visit to the fortified hill town that they recommended, was an interesting and nearly perfect way to end our trip (we were headed that day for Lisbon with an early flight home the next day).
