“we long to return”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

we felt, as soon as we arrived, that we had come home and there was a dear family waiting for us. one always wants to feel welcomed, as a special guest, and that is how we felt here. conversations upon arrival, at breakfast, and at any moment with an urban and sophisticated staff - in english - were a large part of the excellence. the owner clearly understands hospitality well. our arranged trips to the neolithic stones with an archaeologist, a private tour of the convent, restaurant recommendations tailored to my vegan diet, it seemed that everything was easy for them. we will certainly pass up other experiences to return here and delve a little more deeply into alentejan culture. bravo.

Room Tip: as i am vegan, we were offered the suite off the patio because it has a kitchen, and the staff were...

We came for a weekend when the whole country was hit by a storm. Despite the cold, strong winds and heavy rain, our stay was perfect. And it had a lot to do with this hotel. The staff is beyond friendly and willing to help you in everyday. The room was big, clean and the bed so comfortable. The breakfast offered plenty of variety with local and biological products - the juices alone are worth it! Great value for money, we'll come back for sure!

What a treasure this small hotel was. We flew to Madrid from USA east coast, had a long day drive across to Portugal, found the hotel, and were welcomed by friendly staff, a lovely room, and a great bed. Even ironed sheets! Parking was right under the hotel, so easy! Ask for the list of recommended restaurants. We found a great one, within easy walking distance. (Since we were still on east coast time, we were exhausted and were literally waiting for the waitress to open the door: Restaurante “O Trovador” on Rua da Mostardeira, 4. Excellent, light meal.) I had a google map of the hotel location, which is right inside one of the gate walls, but look for the aqueduct as landmark for turn.

When we first arrived at the hotel, we were surprised it is rated as the number one hotel in Evora. The facilities and the rooms were nothing special. However we soon discovered why. The service is just superb. All staff are very attentive and always looking to help. On our second night we were upgraded to the private villa outside town, with access to a private swimming pool. That was fantastic.
The breakfast at the hotel is amazing. Huge selection of local fare, both sweet and savoury. Hard to stop eating.
Upon checkout, we left a tip. Within half an hour of leaving the hotel, we had received a thank you email from the staff. How often do you get this? The staff at this hotel are second to none.

Room Tip: Get the private villa

In July, we took our kids for holidays in Portugal. One of the places we decided to visit was Évora, in the Alentejo area. We had heard wonderful things about Albergaria do Calvário through Trip Advisor and other sites and we booked it through Booking.com.
When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised at how pretty and nicely decorated the entire place was. You could tell that every detail was well thought off, from the refreshments in the reception area, to the rooms decor and the courtyard set up.
The staff was wonderful. I can't stress how helpful they were, in giving us information on local attractions, to calling the hotel we were going next to change the arrival date once we decided to stay an extra day in Évora. They were very gracious and concerned hosts.
The breakfast was really good, and you can definitely tell they are used to North American tourists (the manager or owner is American) by offering to make you omelets and/or pancakes aside from the buffet style breakfast options already offered. The brunch style breakfast gave us enough sustenance to endure the days of touring or walking with our kids in the city.
The location is also nice, inside the old city, right by the city wall. Easy walking distance to main attractions.
The beautiful courtyard is a perfect and agreeable place to relax in the evening, with a glass of wine or even a light dinner that they can prepare for you.
There is free Wi-Fi in this hotel, which is nice, as we didn't encounter that in half of the hotels we stayed in Portugal.
We highly recommend this hotel for both families and couples. It was the best hotel of our 2 week trip in Portugal.

We arrived on the first of the year to spend a night there. The city is very beautiful and ready for you to lose yourself in the picturesque cobbled streets!
The hotel is quite charming with a warm atmosphere and welcoming! We arrived around 14.00 o' clock but our room was not yet ready so we left our things and went around the city until they have it prepared. When we returned they showed us two suites in order for us to choose which one we wanted. One was in the main building and the other one a bit separated but still in the interior yard of the hotel (in front of the yard tables). We went for the second one. Very spacious room with quite big kitchen area and spacious room. The girl told us that we could use everything in the room for free during our stay. There were two split unit air conditions on the wall that were working perfectly. They offered a complimentary bottle of water and that was all. The mini bar was completely empty. We were wondering what they meant by 'you can use everything for free, is yours' :-) The bin under the sink in the kitchen was full with garbage and we told them about this. They excused for forgetting and changed it.
The rest of the room was very clean and the mattress comfortable. What we didn't like was that in the room were no slippers (for a suite of a 4 star hotel you can expect slippers as you pay quite a lot of money) and the floor covered with ceramic was very cold as there were no small carpets at all, neither in the corridor or in the room. This would be maybe the most negative thing we spotted. I think these are basic details to make a rooms warmer or at least they could offer slippers.
The breakfast next day was the highlight. It was indeed funny that but next day all the hotel's personnel knew about the forgotten garbage bin in the kitchen. They breakfast was complete with much organic food! Everything was delicious!
While checking out the super friendly reception personnel asked us for our suggestions in order to improve the hotel and they offered us a pot of pure honey to take with us. That was very very sweet and utterly appreciated!!

Next time when in Evora we would book a standard room and maybe in the main hotel building than separated!

Room Tip: Go for a standard room instead of a suite since what you get more is just much more space that is...

We have replied personally to this guest. If you are a prospective guest, hopefully here are a few additional thoughts that will better evaluate our hotel.

We believe the small details are just as important to get right as the big ticket items. In this instance, we clearly should have done better.

The details of the in room items should have been better explained so that the guest understands everything we have to offer without having to ask. Hopefully in this case it was merely our inability to fully take the time to describe those items. In some instances, depending on the language, we are not as articulate as we can be. I apologize and we will try to improve.

The fact that the bin was not emptied by our cleaning staff is obviously not acceptable. We have a generally foolproof system in place to review rooms. It should not have happened. I would not be happy if the same thing happened to me when I was traveling. The reason it was talked about at breakfast the following day is that the individual who checks rooms was assisting in breakfast. She was embarrassed by the situation and wanted to acknowledge the mistake. I am truly sorry for this mistake and the guest should be compensated for this error.

We hope that the value that a guest receives from a suite is commensurate with its price. We rely on guest feedback to continually improve your overall experience. We are committed to getting it right.

At the end of the day, we continue to believe our true points of difference are the level of service we provide and making sure we take care of all of the little things that make your stay a memorable one.

We promise to continue to invest in improvements that are important to you so that your stay is an exceptional one. If we make a mistake and don't live up to your expectations, we commit to making it right for you during your stay.

Thank you.

Nice comfortable rooms, we just found the heating system a bit noisy and drying up the air.
Great breakfast with diverse range of local products. Much attention given and care taken by all staff members.
