Owner description: The walls and pillars of the chapel, built in the century. XVII, are lined with thousands of human bones and skulls. Ceilings with murals realtivas death. Written on a plaque next to the door, the phrase "We bones that are here for your hope", reminds us how fleeting passage through life

We visited the Chapel of Bones during a recent trip to Portugal. This was a "girl's trip" and not everyone was thrilled about the idea. It is very interesting. When all was said and done we were all glad we went inside.

Beware of gypsy type people outside asking for money. They even have money aprons on, but they are actually just begging. You pay inside the church.

To get to the chapel you have to go through the Igreja de Nossa Senora. It's a pretty little church and they only charge you a Euro to go into the little chapel round the back. Compared to the one in Evora I thought it was actually prettier (if that's the word for a something made of bones) due to its simplicity. Definitely worth a quick visit and makes you think.

They are the sculls and bones of 1245 monks built into an alter as a rememberance. They were taken up from behind the church and assembled to commemorate the monks.

Not for the faint-hearted, this chapel really is completely covered in bones. We liked that it was reasonably cheap to enter and that rather than just ban you from taking photos, they allowed you to do so if you paid an extra euro.
