The food as well as the wine were great, but unfortunately the place was smoking, plus they tried to charge is for things we did not have. Quite a pity, a place with potential, but poorly managed.

This restaurant has excelent food, great wines, good service... But if you're a non-smoker you'll get terribly annoyed by the smokers right next to the so called "non-smoking" area (no separation). Amazingly this is still possible in 2013 Europe... And our check had a "minor" overcharge of €8, for apetizers we didn't touch, promptly corrected but annoying anyway. Don't forget: in Portugal you pay for the appetizers, but only for those you eat, if you don't touch them they can't charge you, so don't let them... Or you can go to some other place, where they don't are more ethical.

Perhaps the Chef was out clubbing the night we were there, but we found the food simply unpalatable Sorry, but this goes beyond cultural expectations. We had a Lamb dish which was mainly small bones and a Pork Cheeks dish. Both entrees were extremely tough and seemingly days old. We sat near the Dessert Cooler/Service Area and watched one of the servers continually throw it on plates like it was old wet concrete. Lovely food should be lovingly served. It looked more like a Grudge Match. Also, there is INSIDE RESTAURANT SMOKING AREA. Perhaps they should point this out at Reservation time. Might help some last minute table reshuffling.

We were turned away the first night for lack of a reservation, so made one for the following night. We were surprised to find that our table was near (but not in) a smoking section. Fortunately, the group which had reserved tables in that area were due to arrive much later, so we were not bothered by smokers. (it is very unusual to find a restaurant in Portugal with a smoking area.)

There are several small starters placed on the table, so be careful to choose only those you really want and send the others back, otherwise you will be charged for everything. We ordered the roast lamb and the waiter was kind enough to let us know that the portions are huge and that one order would be enough. We couldn't even finish that, so took the rest home.
This is a very popular restaurant and deserves its popularity.

We entered the 'Dom Joaquim' restaurant with high expectations. It was listed as #4 on the TripAdvisor ranking so we were expecting good food.

The first impact is extremely positive: it's a well furnished and decorated restaurant. It' isn't heavily lit, which makes the environment interesting.

We were the first to arrive, but we could anticipate that it would be a full house for lunch (all the other tables were prepared for group lunches).

The variety of entrées opened up our appetite. We asked for mushrooms with sausage and weren't disappointed. The dish was served with a different variety of mushrooms and were well seasoned.

For the main dish, we ordered the 'Duo de Porco com gambas e fruta' (Pork duo with shrimp and fruit). The dish was excellent. The meat was delicious, soft and well seasoned. The shrimp was a nice complement and the fruit was an excellent touch to the dish as a whole. I don't remember having such a delicious pork dish.

For desert, we ordered the chocolate mousse which was, once again, delicious. The other desert - Torreão - was also delightful.

The service was friendly and prompt and the check -- well within our expectations.

Overall, don't miss the opportunity to eat at Dom Joaquim if you're in Évora.
