“The Evora Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2011

A tiny little restaurant, no reservations can be made and when the Owner Domingos thinks it's enough for the night, he just closes the door. We had some nice tapas and a good glass of wine. Try the pimentos and the grilled mushrooms. Delicious!

“Great local restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2011

We had dinner at the Botequim do Mouraria while visiting Evora and loved it. It was off season and there was a big football match that night so we ended up the only patrons for dinner. The food was fantastic and we had a fun time chatting with Domingos, the owner.

“Long may you run, Domingos”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2011

This little restaurant has a lot going for it: the owner Domingos does not take reservations - he does not need to.

The entire principle is one of doing something well and on an intimate, manageable scale. The dozen or so stools at the bar fill up, and when they are full, new arrivals are politely told how long they are likely to have to wait.

It’s no-nonsense fare, but nicely served and immaculately cooked, and the overall ambience is a sheer delight. Our own experience is, I am sure, replicated night after night as the customers interact with each other and with the jovial owner and his wife Florbela (she was blushingly brought out from the kitchen for a photo-op) and eat heartily and sup from an impressive collection of wines.

I was left with a powerful sensation (just as in another restaurant in Evora reviewed elsewhere) of how utterly disastrous it would be if some banker or venture capitalist were to walk in one evening, taste the steak or the lamb chops and the heady atmosphere, and tempt the proprietor to expand.

Small gems like this are best left unfiddled-with. Sometimes “ambition” is the death of us.

Recommended.

“authentic local cusine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2011

The Botequim de Mouraria serves typical local (hearty) food. The space is small: 12 seats at a bar; frequented by locals and authentic. The husband serves the food, slices the cheese/meat and pours wine while his wife cooks. The atmosphere is convivial and welcoming and the black pork was delicious. FYI: they do have a menu in English. Well worth a visit for lunch or dinner.

“Unique, micro restaurant with terrific food and terrific owners.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2011

I was in Evora this week on business. A local colleague took me to Botequim da Mouraria, only telling me before that I would not be disappointed. I was not disappointed! The owner and his wife only serve food that they have purchased fresh. With no menu and, in my case, no Portugese language, you simply point to the choices that are presented to you. Get there early! The 10+ chairs filled up by 8pm for dinner. I will go back.
