“An amazing hotel in an amazing location”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

We stayed for two nights and this place is an incredible historic hotel overlooking the country. We stayed in Aug and it appeared empty. The room was OK, but it gave the feeling of being a little run down. The food in the restaurant was excellent good local cuisine. I think the issue with these Pousada hotels it that they are run by the government. They would do a lot better if they were professionally managed and provided a more internationally based booking system.

We stayed in 5 pousadas in Portugal and both agreed that this was our all round favourite for location, service and general facilities. It was fortunately that this was the one we had chosen to spend two nights at so we could really enjoy it.

Good service from the reception from the outset and throughout stay. Jug of sangria by the pool were very pleasant and we left just before we got totally hooked on this.

Room size was very good - 112 I think it was - initial hiatus when we were provided with a twin rather than double room but soon resolved. Always makes sense to check the room first before bring bags in.

Not every pousada we went to provided a jug of chilled water at the reception desk - simple but effective approach. On our sample of five pousadas there seemed to be an inverse relationship between those which asked us to nominate an employee of the month and those that provided chilled water. Estremoz seems to be more in general team approach which I think works better for guests.

Will certainly try and work Estremoz into our next trip to Portugal.

Tips: good market on Saturday morning - tower next to pousada best visited in early morning or early evening - stunning views. Sangria by the pool is very reasonable treat.

what can i say its 13th centery hotel with service style of old times too,
i will skip this hotel. i was glad we only styed one night.
the room decor is ugly. plaid blanket as a decoration from another land. yes old items. the smell was of my grandma closet. and the bedding comeone!!! wool blanket!!!????! in 2013!! hellloooo palace?? right!!!
the brekfast was sheer yuk. the dinner was mix some items were ok like the soup but the dog fish?!! my hubby tried and gave it the worse dish in his life. and my hubby eat everything!!!! smiling .

after being to other pousada i know this one is poorly run...yet it can get worse believe me it always can get worse!!

"the hotel is old~ this is why you have no lights in your room" she said to us when we checked in to a dark room of 13th century old palace, they made hotel of one of many in portugal. when we heard annoying noise of dead battery in the lobby she said smiling "the handyman is on vacation, so the sounds your hear from the dead battery of the fire alarm is something you will need to live with" sure and pray for no fire as we know the alarm will not work. and hear this line: "no wifi in the rooms the walls are too thick" the best was when we complained at dinner to the awful sounds four American ladies made
talking so loud that even me myself was shocked! smiling...so we asked if they can be told to be a bit quiter? he answered us " sorry, i need my job i can't say it to a guests, you go tell them" do you believe it? and this why i love America !!! the rest of the world says we are "demanding" type of people and yes we are!
when i see how other countries function with so many "excuses" i think of America as a country that the characteristic of Americans is that they have zero tolerance to "excuses" that other people from other countries will put up with. they believe and demand that whatever is going wrong ought to be fixed now!!!.

Room Tip: look for another hotel...

OK, so maybe my expectations were too high - after touring Portugal for 1 month, this was going to be the most expensive accommodation and the only pousada.
The exterior is stunning, massive tower dominates the skyline, visible from far away. Parked the car, went inside to check in (having made a direct online reservation through the official website) and started waiting...waited and waited and waited. Well, we were not the only ones waiting at the front desk, several others were also waiting to check in on this Friday night. Finally a young man showed up, very courteous and apologetic but honestly, only one person at reception?
We had a 'standard' room - located on top floor, I was completely underwhelmed. Smallish room size and worse, cramped bathroom - the step up and into the bathtub competes with the sink for space - a painful stubbed toe could result as you have to slip between the sink and this marble step to get to the toilet and bidet (see photo). No window thus at night, take care if using the facilities.
To peek out the window (which is a roof dormer I saw later), one must climb up a few steps so no view from the main bedroom level.
Top notch linens, towels, spotless as one would expect.
Breakfast very mediocre with tepid eggs, bacon, sausauges in those big bin food servers. Acidic coffee poured from ancient looking cafeteria style carafes.
Too cold to swim but the grounds looked lovely.
Best was the 360 view of countryside from top of the gothic tower! take some wine, bread and picnic with your honey as the sun sinks low

would I stay here again? no - in fact, I wonder about other pousadas now - glad we only stayed at one and it was here as the overall setting and interior furnishings magnificent without a double but private accommodations seem to offer better value and better service

Room Tip: room 205 had a very limited view - I think most rooms on this level had lower ceiling than the level...

It may be 800 years old but I still received WIFI in my room. Looking out of your bedroom window across the garden to a tower which, once you climb it, allows you to see as far as Spain.
Staff were very accommodating and friendly.

This was one of three Pousadas my wife and I stayed in during our recent two-week trip through Portugal. I had debated on whether or not to stay in this property or the pousada in Evora, but decided on this one because it seemed more of a unique experience. After touring both properties, I believe we made the correct decision. The pousada was very beautiful, as advertised, rich with "museum quality" relics throughout the property. The staff was expectional and the accomodations were very comfortable. There is not much to see in Estremoz itself, however, but the relatively close proximity to Evora (~45 minutes) made the latter a very enjoyable daytrip.

This was the best of the five pousadas we enjoyed. Impressive interior furnishings, soaring ceilings, art, and more to make you feel like you are in a palace, which you are. Nice room. But beds in all the Pousadas seemed hard to us.

Dining room is gigantic but nearly empty. I told my lady of 50 years that I rented the entire room for her! It was our anniversary. Good food, expertly served. Not cheap, but considering that the substantial taxes are already included in the menu price and that service tips are generally 5 to 10%, I think the bottom line total is about equal to what we would pay in USA for fine dining, maybe less.

Parking was right at the door. Village right there, inside the ancient walls.

Don't hesitate to drive a rental car in Portugal. GPS is essential in Lisbon, but signage is quite good in the country. Also, pay for the automated toll payment system for your rental car. Country roads are very good and scenery is beautiful. Traffic is sane and very light outside of the greater Lisbon area. We stayed off the Autostrada (toll roads) as much as we could. We drove about 500 miles in five days, staying at a different Pousada each night. I recommend that if you like to travel on your own pace and don't mind the adventure of finding your way. A capable map reader/navigator in the right seat is very helpful.
