Signage through the town is sketchy, but follow your instincts toward the castle on the hill! You can park near the front entrance and on the square at the top. (Found when departing that there is an easier back route direct to the A6, so ask for directions via this route when making your reservations.) The superior rooms are spacious with a side den/sitting area - though no window there, so rather dark. Very helpful front desk staff. Great pool. Wifi (spotty) only available in the main lobby using an access code, but free. Reason for the 4 vs 5 rating - the restaurant menu and food quality could be improved. We tried the two restaurants nearby (A Cadeia - 'old 16thC gaol' of Estremoz; and Sao Rosa - excellent!) for subsequent dinners. Breakfast items numerous, but repeatedly seen each day (pastries, cheese, fruits did not appear to be fresh daily). However, forget the food ... you're staying in a royal palace! And you can explore and climb the tower for a fantastic view of the square, town, and countryside. Well worth your visit to this lovely pousada.

Stayed just one night as part of our self guided biking tour by Turaventur Day Tours. Hotel is at the top of lookout, quite a bike climb or hike, great views though. Felt a little under dressed as cyclists. Room had two single poster beds which were quite high off the ground, required.a step up. Restaurant across the road is nice for dinner. Breakfast at the hotel was great.

Room Tip: Worth the extra expense

This was, by far, the highlight of our trip. Oh my goodness. It was stunning. Our room was huge. The gentleman staffing the all night shift at the front desk was amazing. We were not in the mood for another huge and heavy dinner so he brought us wine and tapas in the amazing lounge. We choose this property for the location and the first- Saturday-of the-month antiques and produce market in the town square. We were not disappointed. Do ask for directions on how to leave avoiding the treacherous drive up to the Pousada to and from town ( yes, there is a back way).

We did a short Pousadas trip starting at this magnificent restored Palace that King Dinz built for his wife, Queen Santa Isabel. Everything in this Pousada is of the finest detail, although the cuisine in the restaurant has be be upgraded. A perfect relaxed luxurious stay which certainly will be repeated!!! The little restaurant just ouside near the entrance to the Pousada called: SÃO ROSAS is an excellent change from the Pousada cuisine. We loved our grand spacious suite which could do with a little more illumination!

This is a very good example of a classic Portuguese pousada, impressive historic building in beautiful surroundings. The rooms are big and well equipped with antiquities and old paintings and with a wonderful view of the scenery around the beautiful town of Estremoz. The staff was most friendly and helpful. Furthermore I must say I find some of the comments about lacking maintenance and cleanliness hard to understand, however, on the critical side I think they could improve the menue in the restaurant. 3 main courses do represent a very limited choice, and we opted for the Sao Rosas restaurant next door for dinner, but breakfast was good. I have no hesitations about recommending this pousada.

This is another well converted historic building. Our (superior) room was very spacious and comfortable. Breakfast is very good, and staff are friendly and helpful. We have given the "very good" rating on this basis.
However, we did not enjoy our lunch there. We had one of the local specialities, lamb stew, but it was really a glorified soup with poor quality lamb.
The signposting to the hotel is poor.

The hotel tower was being renovated during our stay, so we missed seeing it or using the billiard room. The hotel was also empty except for one other couple which made it feel rather lonely. The cocktail lounge is large and comfortable with high vaulted ceilings, as has the dining room, as you'd expect in a castle. Breakfast was mediocre, below par for a place that is supposed to be luxurious. We also didn't appreciate being charged 3 euros per bottle of drinking water in the rooms, when usually it's free. The view out out of our room's window was spectacular. The furnishings are antiques and there are period paintings on the walls, but they are not of exceptional quality, but do fit well with the castelly atmosphere. Overall, I'd recommend making Estremoz a day trip.
