We spent one night here with twin and double rooms. The hotel feels like an old castle with wide grand staircases and wide hallways. The rooms are large (the largest we had on the trip, but not as large as their website). The bathrooms were modern and also large. We were on a quiet small corridor. Our room overlooked a small courtyard and part of the garden wall walkway. The room had AC but we never noticed it actually cooling down the room.
My mother's room smelt smoky when we entered and that's when we discovered the hotel has smoking and non-smoking rooms. We noticed smoke every time we went through the hallway. I'm not sure how they get away with this with Portugal's non-smoking laws. My mother and daughter moved to a non-smoking room which wasn't quite as large but smelled better. We passed a very peculiar room that was very small with one window that opened onto the hallway. It was probably the weirdest thing i've ever seen in a hotel.
The hotel has ample free parking on the left of the hotel as you face it. There's a large courtyard and another separate pool area. it looked like a great place to hang out but we didn't have time.
The staff were very pleasant but not very helpful. What info they were able to supply about opening times was incorrect. They said tourist info was lacking and hard to come by. Seemed a bit weak for an excuse. They did not even have maps of the town which we find very helpful when you first arrive in a new place. Breakfast was good with scrambled eggs.
Overall it was one of the nicest places we stayed in Portugal and had an excellent location in side the town walls.

The setting is interesting. Used to be a barracks and fort defending the bridge into town. The hotel has been tastefully rebuilt, with good-sized en-suite rooms. Room arrangements vary due to the architecture. Ours were above the gate into town and had views of the small square and the unprepossessing hotel entrance. The hotel is very clean. Good furniture, comfortable beds, large well-equipped bathroom. Reception and room staff were excellent. Helpful, informative. The restaurant is closed for all meals except breakfast. Breakfast itself was typical in its offering, bacon, scrambled eggs etc. together with a good selection of teas, cold meats etc. Coffee was good. Waiting staff replenish constantly.
There is no garage but cars can be parked in the hotel grounds, through the gates and sharp right.
There is a good Portuguese-cooking restaurant a few hundred yards away, La Columna. It's cod dish was excellent, but then, I never tire of cod in Portugal.
Elvas itself is worth walking around in. People are very friendly. Very informative tourist office opposite the main church. The aqueduct is impressive.

This hotel is a real gem, steeped in history. The hotel is the old military hospital built into the fortified walls of Elvas. The who place exudes tranquility and peace. The rooms on the top floor overlook the swimming pool (built into the ramparts), the beautiful patio and gardens. The services are limited, but you are on the doorstep of Elvas with all the old town in walking distance.

Our only regret was that we visited during the 'off season'. The lovely pool was closed as was the in-hotel restaurant. Those were the only two negatives of our stay - other than we wished that we could have stayed longer! Wonderful hotel with Moorish influences. Our room had a bedroom, separate bath and a sitting room. Very large room, even for people from the States like we are. Fabulous courtyard for you to enjoy. Hotel Sao Joao de Deus in centrally located, great for walking. This is an old city, walled off from the rest of the world. Park your car, walk around, eat, try to talk to the locals (we do not speak Portugese at all but everyone was helpful), take many great pictures. Enjoy!

The fact that it was a former convent made our evening activities even more exciting!! Ha!
