Pousada Convento Beja
Ranked #1 of 10 Hotels in Beja

We stayed one night in June 2014 at Pousada de Beja.
Hotel is located right beside the center of Beja city. Just one corner and you are in the main walking street (market street).

Hotel itself is amazing. Pousada is wery wery wery nicely renovated honoring the history of the building! The building still keeps the atmosphere of an old monastery with its cloister, refectory, church, library .... If you end up here, spend some time exploring the hotel.
Room was nice and spacy enough for us three (two adults and 11 year old).

Staff in reception, pool bar are friendly and helpful.

We spent one day in Beja, and explored the small city by walking. (You would not want to drive the tiny streets anyway ;) ).
The old castle is nice - if you like old buildings and of course from castle walls (and tower) there is a nice view of the district, and it's only a short walking from Pousada de Beja.

Beja - we were not wild about it. The castle was definitely memorable, but that was about it for us as far as sight seeing goes. However, this hotel is simply lovely. It drips with old world elegance and has an incredibly courteous and helpful staff. It's a very quiet, solemn place and has so many rooms you can get lost wandering around. A wonderful place to meditate or read a book as time passes slowly. If you're passing through Beja, this is the place to stay.

Last year we stayed here for 2 nights for my husbands birthday. We enjoyed it so much we decided to return this year. We only wanted 1 night as it was also our daughters 40th so are off to the UK for a joint family celebration. In fact we were'nt going at all until I found out that we would loose our Pestana points if we did not use them despite it saying on their advert that points do not expire. I had great trouble booking on the Pestana web site and emailed them. I had a quick reply telling me what steps to take and assuring me that there were nights available for the number of points we had or I could use the cash and points option. After about 20 attempts to find a Pousada putting in the dates etc. each time I gave up and emailed them again. Another quick but unhelpful reply. I then rang the Pousada site, very helpful young lady quickly told me what was available and prices. Decided on Beja and booked superior room (it was my husband's 65th) on line using the cash and points option. Arrived early and asked if we could have lunch whilst waiting for our room. Told it was already ready and we could take our bags up straight away. Wonderful except when we got there it was the same standard room as we had had the previous year! We were asked to see the manager after lunch., and were then told that the previous week Pestana had regraded all the rooms overlooking the pool to superior. This was not what we were expecting and not what the Pousada web site leads you to believe. The manager was very nice but said the only superior rooms available were the ones with the view of the pool, or a larger one overlooking the square. We opted for the larger room but it was not in our our opinion superior. What a shame the Pousada's have been taken over by Pestana.
Our actual stay was brilliant as we have come to expect from Pousada's. The waiter Mario remembered us from last year, and had a complimentary glass of champagne waiting for us when we came down for dinner. (the proper stuff!). A complimentary bottle of wine and plate of fruit was brought to our room all for my husbands birthday. ALL the staff are helpful and can't do enough for you. Food and wine excellent. Visit Pousada's you won't be dissapointed but don't bother joining the Pestana Priority guest scheme it's a complete waste of time.

Room Tip: Don't pay extra for a superior room unless you want a view of the pool!! The rooms are small but...

This pousada is situated in the centre of the town of Beja so most convenient for shopping & as a base to visit the Roman & prehistoric sites of the area. The staff are most friendly & the pousada is large & well apportioned with large open areas on the ground floor & bedrooms are very spacious. The breakfast is, as in all the Portuguese pousadas, a buffet but copious. The dinners are very good although expensive. You are able to dine for half the price in the town but not on Sundays as the whole town virtually closes down.

The pousada is not up to par with the other pousadas that we stayed in in Portugal. It is shabby and understaffed. When we entered it was deserted, and only a single young boy who spoke no English was staffing the front desk. He didn't understand that he was to help us with our luggage and didn't know how to contact the manager or any other staff. It is difficult to locate in the town and the signs posted for it are misleading if you are driving. The dinner was the only bright spot, as the dining room was immaculate and the food outstanding and reasonably priced with excellent service. The rooms are not very well furnished and the doors have locks on them that are difficult to open and close. I would not recommend staying in this converted monestary or even visiting it or the town of Beja, as there is little to see or do there.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else and in a different town.

Wonderful hotel, good position and nice they haven't stuck a 100 room extension on. Some interesting rooms and gardens. The rooms are large and well appointed but clearly haven't been updated recently - but all very clean. However don't count on a fantastic culinary experience in the restaurant - good service but chef not up to par. Food uninteresting. Even the seabass and vegetables was disappointing - small piece of fish and stone cold vegetables.

This pousada is a stunning place to visit. It is spacious and architecturally beautiful, restored with tremendous taste and style. There are only 35 rooms, beautifully designed and with large ensuite bathrooms. The restaurant is in a magnificent old refectory and serves very good, if a bit pricey, food. The breakfast buffet is very good, and can be eaten on the terrace in good weather. There is a big square swimming pool and a nice area around it for lounging in the hot Alentejo sun. The staff were helpful and pleasant, showing us personally to the room, and helping with luggage. There is a private carpark. The location is excellent being in the centre of Beja and close to shops and restaurants.

Room Tip: All the rooms look over the garden and pool area
