“Birthday Celebration Venue”
Reviewed March 7, 2016 for a stay in February 2016

Oakerthorpe Manor was a very good choice for our family celebration. The house is spacious and interesting and we found it warm and welcoming on arrival. We took advantage of the in-house catering opting for the formal menu which was very good. Although the dining room would seat a full house, the kitchen table was rather cramped for 10 adults and 3 children to eat breakfast together, but the kitchen was roomy enough to cater for us all.

“Comfortable grandeur”
Reviewed March 2, 2016 for a stay in February 2016

We visited the Manor for a family birthday celebration and enjoyed a 2 night stay. The house was quite grand (and obviously had been extremely grand) but at the same time was comfortable and great for a family of people of varying ages. We had babies, a young child, mums, dads and grandparents. While we were there we thoroughly enjoyed a meal cooked in the house and served to us by Diane (one of the owners) and the chef Adrian. The food was delicious and there were even a few left overs for the next day! As the house is being gradually renovated, there were one or two things that needed attention and although there was nothing major, the owners came immediately to put them right. We all agreed that we had had a wonderful time and that we would happily go back.

“Lovely House but needssome maintenance”

We spent a lovely weekend as a surprise birthday for my husband. Enjoyed delicious meal at the Peacock pub just up the road. The manor was ideal for a large party but there were some issues that we brought to the owners attention. With these old houses you expect some problems but not when you rent short term. We felt it wasn't maintained to the level of the rental charged, which was not cheap! The photos made it look a lot better than it was,

“Lovely house- but needs some safety checking”
Reviewed November 13, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

We celebrated a friend's birthday here with a large group of friends and had a great time. The house is very impressive with very large rooms, lots of character all through the house and some amazing details, like the grand staircase which is beautifully made of high quality wood. The snooker room is great and all the bedrooms are beautifully finished (although the shower in the white/pink room was faulty and noisy). However we did find a problem which, as we investigated it further, seemed to get more worrying; that is the fire safety throughout the house. It started when we tried to light a fire in the large sitting room, but the chimney did not draw up the smoke and soon the whole room was filled with smoke, despite it being a windy day. It turns out (after we cleaned it the next day) the fire grate was pulled out into the room too far (about 5 inches out from the fire place) maybe by the previous guests or cleaning staff, so was in the wrong position too far out into the room, but also we could see half a bird's nest up the chimney. I checked outside and no smoke was coming out the chimney top but a plume was coming out the SIDE of the chimney through the brickwork. So we think the owner needs to sweep that chimney to unblock it of bird's nest and maybe bolt the fire grate into the correct position against the fireplace back wall. Then we realised that no smoke alarms had gone off even though there was a lot of smoke to clear- so we urge the owner to add smoke alarms in every room if not there already (we didn't do a check so I'm not sure if there were any, but none went off). Then we realized that, if there was a major fire, how would we get out the top floor? I was not aware of a metal fire escape from the top floor at the back of the house. Isn't all this a legal safety requirement in a rented property? Also the main large sash windows in the siting room were painted shut or broken, so it was not easy to get air into that room- but we heard that those windows were due to be replaced, which would be great. All a bit worrying on a safety front, especially considering how many children we had staying there. I would be pleased to know if these areas have been checked and improved. In general we still had a great time and it was a surprisingly warm, dry and homely house.

“An imposing Manor House perfect for our requirements!”
Reviewed October 21, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

We have just returned from a two night stay at Oakerthorpe Manor where we were celebrating my Mum's 70th Birthday with all 17 members of our family, ranging from age 2 to 73! We held a Murder Mystery evening in the large dining room on one of the nights which was great and the games room was a hit with the teenagers and adults alike!

The Manor was perfect for our requirements due to it's size, kitchen facilities and bedroom arrangements, although as mentioned on their website, one of the bedrooms does have very limited headroom. There is a main railway track close by and the trains run through the night, so remember your ear plugs if you're a light sleeper!

Like previous reviews have mentioned the property could benefit from some tlc in places, so if you're looking for 5* luxury this wouldn't be the place for you. However, if like ourselves you're not there to inspect the paintwork but are looking for an imposing house to accommodate a large party at a reasonable price, then I would definitely recommend Oakerthorpe Manor.

We were made to feel very welcome and we all had a splendid weekend.

“Full of character but in need of some work!”
Reviewed August 25, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

We stayed here for a hen do and the house made a perfect venue for our eerie murder mystery evening! It fit 16 of us comfortably and we had a lot of fun exploring all the rooms of the house. The large dining room makes for a great dinner party and we also had the associated caterers in for dinner and they were wonderful!

The house is very old and is just in need of a bit of work to help restore it to its former glory. We happened to stay on one of the wettest June weekends and there were a couple of leaks that are in serious need of repair. With a bit of love and work this house would be a wonderful venue.

“Lovely old house needing some tlc”
Reviewed July 23, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We stayed here for two nights last week It is a lovely big old house but unfortunately does need a lot of work to make it worth booking again. There is wall paper hanging off the ceiling in the stair well, the shower cubicle upstairs leaks into the kitchen, the grouting round the shower is very poorly done. there is a serious lack of mirrors in the bedrooms. The carpets and furniture looks 'tired'. We had problems with the door locks which resulted in a call out. There was plenty of pots and glasses in the kitchen The cooking facilities were good as was the fridge/freezer etc. The house was clean as were the towels and bedding. There were rats in the garden but that's to be expected due to the location it is in. The garden was fine. All this said it was a good weekend.

Dear Susan.

As you can imagine, The Manor was built in 1840 and does have its problems from time to time. I shall address your concerns as best as possible. We re-decorate once per year throughout the whole house - sometimes guests are a little more hard on the interior than in other years.
We try and keep the kitchen fully stocked with enough crockery for the amount of guest the house can cater for.
All this said we are glad you had a lovely weekend and would love to see you in the future.
Kind regards,
Grace
