Our family has lived in NC for almost 10 years, and we've been wanting to go snow tubing and just haven't gotten around to it. We decided to go over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. We found coupons for $3 off each ticket at the visitors center in Boone. They helped out a little, since the tickets were $30 a person plus a $5 parking fee. ($5 higher per person than usual because of the holiday wkd.)
The first tubing session begins at 10am. Arrive early!!! We arrived at 900am and had to wait in line, but it moved quickly. We have two children, ages 10 and 5. We had a bib for our youngest, but had to rent one for our 10 year old. Loretta and Jennifer work in the gift shop/rental area. They were the best!!! They let us know that snow pants weren't necessary for adults, as long as we were dressed warmly and had snow boots on. That advice saved us $22! Our entire family had a blast! Our 5 year old rode with my husband or myself, since the rule is that you have to be able to touch the snow with your heels in order to slow yourself down towards the end of the run. 2 hours is PLENTY of time. Our kids were worn out and ready for some hot chocolate in the lodge. Arriving early for the first session is also beneficial if it is going to be a warm day. As we were leaving, we heard employees telling customers that snow was melting and that they had to close down some of the runs.

The place is very organized. The best time offered is 2:00 pm since it is a little bit sunny and there is enough time to get there without rushing in the morning. The group goes for one hour and 45 minutes and we thought it was good enough.
Everybody had lots of fun, adults enjoyed it as much as did the younger ones, it is a fun thing to do in the winter time. We had to wait until January because they didn't get enough snow in December, but it was worth the wait.
If you are not used to being in the snow like us, make sure you stay warm bringing the appropriate cloths and gear, (water proof).
We didn't do the zip lining but a lot of people go for it.

Great experience at Hawk's Nest for tubing. the crowds were a little high and the lines were a little long, but definitely a "must-do" for families when visiting the NC mountains.

We had a great time. The ladies in our group ranged from 63 y/o to 14 y/o and everyone had so much fun tubing. We laughed and made wonderful memories. Everyone was super nice and the staff was visible and reminding everyone of the rules so no one would get hurt. I didn't care for the photographer stopping to take pictures of us - it held up the line some what.

Hawksnest is a good time. If they lowered their rates ($30/ticket + $5/parking) and improved their operation (lines were too long so we were only able to tube 5x in the 1:45 time slot) it would be a lot better. If they want to charge $30 then they shouldn't sell so many tickets that you spend the majority of your time in line. If they lowered their rates and sold tickets like they do now, the lines would feel less annoying.
