Me and my wife stopped here before and after our cruise around french polynesia, its an old hotel with some little problems. Beds and bath are cleaned but sometimes i've found some bugs in the room.
Breakfast is not inculded but u can make tea or coffe in the room, if u want to make yr breakfast u have a small shop just outside the hotel, on the main road's gas station.
The best part of the hotel is the garden, and even the swimpool is nice. The beach is small and not so clean.

Walking to the room by night can be difficoult cause some of the lights of the path trought then garden were broken.

By normal standards this would be an average to poor hotel,but in Tahiti it is something of a bargain.
First the good;
Price 2nights including tax £167,meals extra seem expensive but given that 70% of the diners were local must be good value
Gardens/Situation,beautiful views accross the sea and lovely well cared for grounds.Nice pool .
Staff,Yasmina is a gem and trys to take very good care,the rest are friendly and more or less efficient.
Location,close to centre and docks.Not too far from airport.

Now the bad;
Tatty/Dated rooms with slow inefficient air con.
Staff Shortage,not enough to people to give service.ie slow meals,slow baggage etc.
Costs,even in this hotel 2 orange juice cost £10 !

If we had to go to Tahiti again we would stay here but the costs of the place will keep us out..

We loved it here and hated to leave. If you are looking for the Ritz treatment and pampering, go elsewhere, but if you are looking to have a real encounter with local Tahitians, this is the spot. Rooms are not fancy, but are clean and everything works. Well located on a black beach (where outrigger races are held offshore at sundown) east of town, it is only a five minute taxi ride to downtown Papeete (the bus stop is also only 3 blocks away) and 15 minutes to the airport. The grounds are spacious with good tropical plantings and a nice naturally designed pool. The bar and restaurant are on a terrace overlooking the beach, where you can enjoy fabulous sunsets sipping on your Mai Tai. The food was not fancy but reasonable and well prepared (best fried shrimp ever and coconut pie). The highlight of the stay was a local band which played dance music after dinner. The locals apparently find the hotel to be their dance hangout of choice on Friday nights, and it was great fun to watch the Fred Astaire imitators. The music was for middle aged folks, but our teenagers enjoyed it thoroughly, and it was a great bonding time for the family to dance and laugh together. We would surely return.

We arrived at the Royal Tahitian late in the evening but the reception staff were welcoming and helpful. A porter took our bags to the room. The setting is attractive and we enjoyed our stay. We were relieved, having read some negative reviews of the place. But we were surprised by the amount of traffic on the road at 6.30am. Be prepared for this if you have an early flight.

This is a great place if you are on a budget and still want everything you imagined you wanted in Tahiti: a pool, beachfront, good food, a bar with live entertainment, and clean accommodations. You will be satisfied with what you get, considering the prices of other options in Tahiti. To top it off, the staff at this hotel are friendly, in my experience; the grounds are large, park-like and lush; and the hotel bar and restaurant are quite popular with the locals too, so you get a lot of local color and a taste of Tahitian’s at leisure--something you might not experience at the upscale properties that cater more to overseas tourists.

Reading the two most recent reports, I think this hotel can deceive if you come expecting to get the same level of service as the Ritz for Motel Bates prices. For what my statement is worth: This is a very local, laid-back, low-budget h(m)otel with minimum service (but I know for a fact that they will carry your bags to your room). If you cannot be satisfied with some tattered edges showing "age"; if you can't live without a TV while on vacation; if you don't carry your own umbrella, and if you come to Tahiti expecting the same treatment and service level as you get at home, then don't stay here, as you will surely be disappointed--in fact--you may be disappointed with all of Tahiti and not just Le Royale Tahitien.

In my experience, the great service started months before I even arrived. Yasmina in reservations went out of her way communicating daily to make arrangements for a good room rate and also local transportation. The relatively bargain-rate transportation she arranged from the airport to hotel, and other trips, saved me a lot of money during 3 out of my 4 scheduled trips. But be warned! On the last leg from the hotel to the airport, the transport company no-showed. I waited 15 minutes and finally the hotel desk called them, only to be told "It's late Saturday night and no driver. Find somebody else." The hotel called a taxi and that one trip to the airport cost more than the other 3 trips combined. This lack of service is no reflection on the hotel, but if you need local transport, it might be a good thing to check about pre-arranging it before you get there.

The room is clean and very basic, but also dated, as mentioned. It reminded me of a US motel room. Its one amenity, if I recall correctly, was a bar of soap and a towel. No shampoo, rinse, cotton swabs, hair dryer, lotions, etc., but again, this isn't the Ritz. I think the hotel should have furnished shampoo, but I didn't ask if they had any. The room had an empty mini-refrigerator that you can fill up if you have your own drinks.

The small pool and Jacuzzi were OK. Not huge or showy or architectural statements common at upscale resorts nowadays, but adequate to dip in and out of to cool off. There were lounge chairs and a shaded area to avoid the sun. Drinks and limited food items are available at the pool bar, run by a kind, elderly "aunty" type lady.

The beach is black sand. Unfortunately in places there is litter strewn around, destroying the natural beauty. Plus, the beach slopes down and out toward the sea so don't expect it to be Bora Bora where you can walk and swim around in shallow water like in a pool. But the beach is right there at your doorstep and affords you some good beach-time in Papeete.

Finally, I found the food to be quite good at the restaurant, which is located next to the beach so you get a beautiful view whether sitting inside or out. The portions were plentiful and the prices weren't bad for Tahiti. I had no trouble with the wait staff. Again, the reasonable prices at the restaurant reflect the reasonable nature of this hotel, which I highly recommend as probably the best mid-range accommodations in Tahiti, considering all it offers at the price.

We just returned from a trip to Easter Island and French Polynesia and our experience was great overall. The only bad experience was at the Royal Tahitian in Papeete. We arrived late in the evening and the check-in staff were surly and unhelpful. they gave us our room keys and said a guy outside would help us there. He was there but just stared when we asked for help. We had to go back in twice to ask where rooms were as they said no maps were available and there were no lights on outside! No help or direction were given only a vague point over the shoulder. We finally located the rooms (there were 5 of us) and when we went in of course the air wasn't on and it was sweltering. We turned the air on but within minutes the power in the whole hotel went off! And stayed off - it must be a regular thing as next morning we found a candle in the closet. Thank goodness we carry flashlights - of course it was pretty startling when everything came back on several hours later. Next day the office staff were just as unhelpful and rude. We were glad we only had planned one night there so we didn't have to deal with them very long.

The hotel is old and decadent. Funny smell when entering the room, only at the third room we found a properly working bathtub.No TV but they brought us one on request (no remote, too modern for this hotel), room not properly cleaned, carpet thorned appart. Reception service ok but failled to borrow us a umbrella to go to our room when it was REALLY raining (everyday). No room service whatsoever, no people to take your bags to the room. Bar staff ok, nice ambiance specially on jazz night with live performers.Restaurant staff nasty and with bad manners. Breakfast useless and expensive, restaurant meals just ok.Yes the garden is beautifull, the beach is good and the pool minimal. Time capsule:you're on the 70's and they like it so much that they kept it just as it was.
