It is an excellent hill resort with sakura bloom, sea of clouds, sunrise, sunset, strawberry farms and above all quite chilly weather. The natural beauty of the place over-compensates the extra hassle of reaching this place.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Thailand. The agricultural station is very interesting and the gardens beautiful. Make sure to take a walk up the hill past the bonsai garden. Despite being very busy overall, we were the only people in this section and from the top you almost see the whole agricultural station. A must when in the area.

Drive up was a bit scary, but so glad we did it. Loved the bonsai garden, the roses , the coffee and the vege patch.

this is what the hill stations are to India or Malaysia: a retreat. At almost 2000m above sea-level it can get quite chilly up there, especially during the winter months from Nov to Feb. Plenty of fruits and vegetables are grown up there all year round. As it is a Royal Project it's being looked after very well. There are some nice hikes and if you have a car or a bike you can visit the local handicraft market at Nor Lae, right at the border to Myanmar (Burma). During the cool season fog can become so thick that one can see no more than a couple of metres.
There are plenty of small places to spend the night outside the park entrance at moderate prices and one rather luxurious Amari Nature Resort with all the amenities one would expect plus a great breakfast buffet and electric blankets. We also very much enjoyed staying inside the park. Here however one would have to make an advance reservation as it is frequently booked. The restaurant serves lovely food and of course also breakfast.
To get there one can turn off from #107 between Chai Prakan and Fang or, which I usually prefer because of it's diversity, take #1178 after Chiang Dao and head up to Arunothai. There turn into the small and usually deserted #1340 which is winding it's way up to Doi Ankhang. The GT-rider map The Golden Triangle Loop is an excellent companion on this road as it is on any in this region. It's worth spending two nights up there.
