Am I out of step?
Party of four pre-booked. Whilst waiting for our companions, we looked at the signs and awards in the windows. Last award issued for 2014……
When we entered and our lead name given to Hilde, the greeter, she immediately served the people behind us……. Mmmm, things looking up.
Seated in the upstairs dining area, although the décor was pleasant, not as salubrious as the downstairs area. We gave our order for an aperitif, (I tried to ask Hilde a question, in English, as I am not a Dutch speaker and she immediately talked over me to one of my companions) and we waited, and waited, seeing other patrons who were seated after us served with their aperitif. A member of staff had to be nudged to remind him of our order…… Uhuh, getting better. Pre-meal nibbles arrived and were good. (Not being all downbeat, the bread was excellent, could have eaten a whole loaf!!!!)
The main course, lamb for me, was good, bit scacre on the vegetables, and the mélange of fresh veg. could have done with an extra couple of minutes.
After the main course, we were asked if we would like to take dessert on the terrace as it was nice and sunny. (In actual fact, a ploy to free up our table for more customers…..) It was pleasant, until one realised the reason.
Now, at the bottom of the menu page we selected from was a footnote which tells one that for an extra €20 per person a diner can have half a bottle of wine. When our bill came, there was €80 extra added for this bargain! My partner immediately queried this as we did not opt for it, and the… mistake… was rectified.
As we were leaving, the entertainment started! One of the waiters tripped on the stairs with hands full of meals.
I found that the prices charged were excessive, even for Belgium, which is noted for high restaurant, particularly drinks, prices. It is certainly not "fine dining", but above average prices.
All in all, not a happy experience for us. My partner is a retired hotel manager, her son a very good chef. I have owned a hotel, and travelled and eaten in many fine places around the world. So we are not yokels from the sticks. As a Birthday treat for my partner, not to be repeated. Hilde, sorry love, you are not on our Christmas card list.

Vandaar nogmaals onze excuses.

We were looking forward to some high quality Flemish cuisine such as eel in cream sauce whisky whilst on holiday in Ieper and delighted to find some at De Steenen Haene (The Stone Rooster). The food, service, dining room and ambience was excellent.

We were a party of three: two of us visiting from Canada and one a resident of Belgium who booked us here on the recommendation of her friend. It was a lovely evening so the host (owner) suggested we have our cocktail on the patio outside by the garden. Such a lovely suggestion! When our meal was ready we were led to our table inside where a wonderful Belgian feast awaited. We had ordered some Belgian specialties which were delicious but in addition to that, they produce on site almost everything they prepare in the kitchen. So everything had the additional flavour of "local" farm-to-table.
The owner/hosts are (rightfully) extremely proud of their restaurant and have published a book (in Flemish) with many of their recipes, photos etc.
This restaurant is located about a 5 minute drive outside of Ieper (Ypres) and is well worth it. The countryside is beautiful and - what's 5 minutes??

We visited De Steenen Haene whilst staying for a few nights at B&B Vijverhuis, Zillebeke. Having gone past a few times we decided to make a booking for our last evening meal in the area. Having looked at the menu I thought it looked a little pricey, but decided to book all the same. I'm pleased to say we were certainly not disappointed!

We decided not to have starters as we had had a picnic during the afternoon. All four of our party ordered rib of beef for our main - medium to rare. We also ordered a bottle of house white and house red. Very nice indeed!

Whilst we were awaiting our meal, we were first brought an appetiser of lovely bruschetta with cream cheese and a finely chopped tomato salad. Then, as the chef started to grill our succulent beef on the open fire in front of our table, we were provided with a really nice in-house made pate, puffed pastry pin wheels and air dried ham. We were really pleased that we hadn't ordered a starter!

Service and attention to our needs was exceptional!

When our rib of beef arrived, it had been cooked perfectly, certainly to our liking and sliced to show a smokey outside with succulent pink meat - served with crispy chips and salad. We really enjoyed our meal and would certainly recommend this dish to other meat lovers.

Whilst the bill, including coffees and drinks for four persons came to around £200, we might have thought it a little expensive. However, the pre-drinks, appetisers, wine, beef and level of service were excellent, we certainly felt that this had been a very special evening out and well worth the price we paid.

Thank you to all at De Steenen Haene!

We will certainly call again in the future.
