Am I out of step?
Party of four pre-booked. Whilst waiting for our companions, we looked at the signs and awards in the windows. Last award issued for 2014……
When we entered and our lead name given to Hilde, the greeter, she immediately served the people behind us……. Mmmm, things looking up.
Seated in the upstairs dining area, although the décor was pleasant, not as salubrious as the downstairs area. We gave our order for an aperitif, (I tried to ask Hilde a question, in English, as I am not a Dutch speaker and she immediately talked over me to one of my companions) and we waited, and waited, seeing other patrons who were seated after us served with their aperitif. A member of staff had to be nudged to remind him of our order…… Uhuh, getting better. Pre-meal nibbles arrived and were good. (Not being all downbeat, the bread was excellent, could have eaten a whole loaf!!!!)
The main course, lamb for me, was good, bit scacre on the vegetables, and the mélange of fresh veg. could have done with an extra couple of minutes.
After the main course, we were asked if we would like to take dessert on the terrace as it was nice and sunny. (In actual fact, a ploy to free up our table for more customers…..) It was pleasant, until one realised the reason.
Now, at the bottom of the menu page we selected from was a footnote which tells one that for an extra €20 per person a diner can have half a bottle of wine. When our bill came, there was €80 extra added for this bargain! My partner immediately queried this as we did not opt for it, and the… mistake… was rectified.
As we were leaving, the entertainment started! One of the waiters tripped on the stairs with hands full of meals.
I found that the prices charged were excessive, even for Belgium, which is noted for high restaurant, particularly drinks, prices. It is certainly not "fine dining", but above average prices.
All in all, not a happy experience for us. My partner is a retired hotel manager, her son a very good chef. I have owned a hotel, and travelled and eaten in many fine places around the world. So we are not yokels from the sticks. As a Birthday treat for my partner, not to be repeated. Hilde, sorry love, you are not on our Christmas card list.
