Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

The ceremony was nice, Two young boys laid a wreath while buglers played. A more involved ceremony is performed during the tourist season.
I felt the entire area was too British war pat on their own back for saving the world single handedly. This is not the place to go for a Belgium experience. Or to get a complete history of the WW I.

“A sobering place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

We visited the Menin Gate memorial after the Last Post Ceremony. I would have liked more time and less people to absorb the atmosphere of this memorial. It is a memorial to those Commonwealth soldiers who have no known grave. The Belgian people are to be thanked for the very moving Last Post ceremony and the immaculate way in which the Memorial is kept.

“Thought-provoking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014

This is an impressive monument to the missing. However, it is not the bricks and mortar that impress. It is the sobering sight of endless lists of names - nearly 55,000 - of Commonwealth soldiers who have no known grave. A drop in the ocean given the context of 1914-18 maybe, but extremely poignant. Afterwards, a thoughtful and quiet walk along the river bank to Ramparts Cemetery.

“combine with ramparts and/or Last Post”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2014

The memorial - as a building - is not remarkable, but if you are under the dome, and you see all those names of young people who died , yo cannot be but moved.
Ideally to be combined with a walk on the ramparts !

Words cannot describe the experience, simply fantastic and everyone should visit and see. The Belgian people are so kind and friendly.
