Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

You have to visit the Menin Gate if you are in Ypres - very moving. The Last Post enacted each evening at 8.00pm is impressive, if you can get past all the noise and crowds - especially of school children, who seem to have little interest in the significance of the Monument.

Wonderful memorial to all who fought but do not have a known grave in the Ypres area. The 8pm ceremony every night is very poignant. The firemen play the last post which would bring tears to the eye of a stone!

We visited this memorial having researched one of my wife's relations who is listed among the 55,000 British and Commonwealth Soldiers who have no known grave. There is nothing I can add to the many other reviews except to remind everyone that we must never forget these men who thought going to war was a great adventure.

I visited Menin Gate as part of a Western Front Tour by Australians in 2008. Menim Gate records the names of more than 38000 missing in action in Flanders. The ceremony at 8pm each evening is a experience I will never forget. On the evening I attended there were four or five musicians including a piper from the local Fire Brigade. The solemn ceremony was attended by a huge crowd hushed by the sound of the bugles and pipes echoing throughout the monument. Lest We Forget..NoteI attended in April 2008. the menu doesn't allow correction.

We attended one of the 8 pm memorial services during Remembrance Week. Its truly remarkable that the local community support this on a daily basis. Thank you for making our Remembrance Day commemoration even more special
