Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

“So moving”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

Very crowded so need to get there about 7 I would say if you want to see what is going on. The ceremony itself was very moving and just serves to show that we do remember them. The crowd was made up of all ages.

“Such a wonderful event”
Reviewed October 31, 2013

We went twice, the second time my six year old insisted we went and left with lots of hard to answer questions! A unique event that remembers sacrifices from nearly 100 years ago every day of the year in a magnificent and sombre setting.

“Very much worth the visit”
Reviewed October 30, 2013 via mobile

It would be hard to imagine visiting Ieper and not visiting the Menin Gate. The majesty of the memorial is in itself worthwhile, but the sheer number of names of those who lost their lives brings a whole new understanding of the sacrifice and loss of the war. The last post ceremony at 8pm is worth staying in town for, but you do need to think about arriving before the 8pm start to ensure a good position. We arrived at 7.20pm and had a good view.

“Commonwealth Memorial to the Missing”
Reviewed October 29, 2013

I guess it would difficult to visit Ieper, and miss the Menin Gate Memorial.

One is initially struck by the scale and grandeur of the monument, and then by the awe-inspiring assault on the emotions on viewing plaque after plaque listing the names of the Great War missing together with their ranks and regiments.

It's a place that's sure to generate some serious reflection on the part of every visitor.
