Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

“Very Impressive memorial”

Our aim was to witness the Last Post at the Menin Gate Ypres, what I found was an awe-inspiring homage to the fallen of WW1. There must have been close to 800 people there (we were warned to be in position by 7.30pm Last Post at 8pm) to get a good spot, well I never thought this would be so popular, and its been going on nearly 100 yrs, incredible.
Very moving, very humbling you must witness this

We went to the ceremony at The Menin Gate it was so moving and just reading all those names makes you stop and think how much we have to be grateful for.

“Unusual memorial”

Close to the main Square - you need to wander up and see this - with Tyne Cot, probably the most well known WW1 memoriaal in Belgium.

“Must see during the day.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2013

This memorial is incredible, it takes a while to stand back and actually understand that these names are people, I know that sounds strange but it does as you need to adjust and there are just so many.

It is a beautifully maintained memorial . If you have mobility problems I don't know how you access the other levels but do try to see them all. The daytime is best as there aren't too many people and you can spend more time giving your thoughts to these poor souls.

We also went to the last post. Separate review.
