Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

This has to be the most moving experience I have ever encountered. To hear the last post played, to see the number of young and innocent men who lost their lives - to end up without a grave.A terrible tragic loss of life.
It is such a humbling experience to visit this memorial. It really is an absolute must to see. But do arrive early!
We stayed at Poorhuis, an apartment in the town, owners of which are exceptional would highly recommend

I was very lucky to be at the Menin Gate just a few days after ANZAC day, and it was lovely to see all the floral tributes. The Gate was a lot larger than I expected; it's very moving... the sad, wasteful loss of life of so many young, innocent men, just tragic, and the world should never forget.

What a memorial. 55,000 names of missing soldiers from the western front in WW1. Very humbling and special place. An absolute must must visit.

Gets really busy at weekends. Did not like the crowd in a small space but worth the visit. I am pleased we went during the day first so we knew where everything was

We did not appreciate the size of this memorial. Rest assured it is large, and contains the so many names from so many places and so many families to whom we own a debt we can never repay. Anyone in the area is well advised to visit it and stop to think.
