Owner description: Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927. Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while members of the local Fire Brigade sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches.

“Menin Gate”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013

A must do for all first time visitors to Ypres. 8 pm and be part of the solemn remembrance. It is best to get there a little earlier if you want to watch the wreath laying but not absolutely essential. If you miss the ceremony still visit.

“Very moving”

The reason to visit the town is to spend time here and see the ceremony. Very moving and certainly makes you think.

All I will say is if you visit this and take in the last post ceremony too and don't have a lump in your throat then words fail me.

“So moving”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013 via mobile

You can not go here at 8pm and not feel moved. It was nice to see so many young people. The young need to know war is not a game and everything will be ok. When we where staying nearby for 4 nights the young from schools from England was well represented. This can only stop war been a good thing to do!!

“Remembrance”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

Excellent daily service in remembrance of the sacrifice of so many young men.

A tendency for some to use it for political or religious motives.
